I made the key error of taking a look on the Steam forums.... The Kool Kidz on there fall broadly into two camps, those who feel that Bioware is dead, the game is ruined forever, and will be so bad that comparing it to Big Rigs Over The Road Racing would be like comparing a slug to God, and that Atari ET is an absolute paragon of perfect gaming perfection in comparison to the absolute, vomit-inducing, nauseating, ghastly, abominable car wreck of Veilguard. And the second group feel that Bioware are now part of a global 'woke conspiracy' to undermine Western values, and are waging a war against straight, white alpha males by covertly turning them into women, 'turning them gay' and that playing Veilguard will cause men to grow breasts and siphon all the testosterone out of their bodies. I even read a comment from a guy who earnestly believed that all game companies were secretly working hand-in-hand with the Taliban to 'destroy the West' and apparently this version of the Taliban are 'woke ultra liberals who will force diversity upon us against our will.' I will never, ever, visit the Steam forums again. But I think we can all be fairly confident that this game will be subject to a MASSIVE review bombing campaign upon launch. IIRC Steam forums, ever since volunteers were removed, are largely unmoderated and therefore attract all the people who've been banned everywhere else. Enjoy. It's worse than 4chan.

In many ways it IS 4chan, in that it appears to attract the same kind of poster. That said, the people on the Neverwinter Nights forums are all very nice.
Regardless, although we can expect review bombing and massive negativity from a certain section of the gamer community I seriously doubt that it's going to impact the game's sales. Honestly even if the combat really does end up sucking I'm still engaged, as I wish to see how the story plays out. Consequently I will probably be buying it on day one, as I'm sure, will many others.

I'm sure the combat will be interesting but nothing is going to compare to the OG awesomeness that was Crushing Prison or nuking hostile mages with Mana Clash. I loved that my favorite skills like Walking Bomb were kept in Inquisition but man I really dislike how this went. They did compare the progression system to the Sphere grid but I think that's being way too generous unless there is a lot more you can do when it comes to developing passives or buffs for the few skills we will have.

According to one of the Game Informer articles major passives will also unlock new attacks (jump attacks were used as an example), so it's not just about buffs for abilities. The question is how many attacks we can unlock.

My post is about the variety you had with different types of abilities in the past and whether the abilities we get will have any depth to them in terms of customization. They specifically name the License Board as another example of what they were inspired by so it'd obviously not just be abilities that are affected.

That hurts the feelings of the Fuck Your Feelings crowd. It's not that they hate - insert whatever you like here, brown skin, girls, girls with brown skin, gay, trans (it really doesn't matter) - it's that there's too much of it/it's "shoehorned in". There is absolutely some arbitrarily small amount*** that they will totally accept. They just don't like it being forced down their throat in a video game that they absolutely are required to play. *** There isn't any amount they will accept, of course. But don't block them, either - because you have to listen to everything they have to say, because Freedom. I have viewed the Steam forums a couple of times, mostly when I was searching for help/advice on sections of a game I was struggling with and it came up in the search results. It was mostly useful on those occasions, but yeah - I did see the type of thing you're referring to, as well. As for combat - well, BG3 aside - nearly every non-DA game I've played in the past decade has had combat similar to or exactly the same as this (the power wheel/ability wheel thing excepted), so I imagine I'll be fine. Won't be trying out hard/nightmare straightaway, though. First run will definitely be "normal" difficulty.

Political discussions relating to EA/BioWare or other games companies may be permitted so far as they are topical matters being discussed in the mainstream gaming press (as long as such discussions do not devolve into a general political discussion and otherwise follows forum rules). Not for any reason in particular, of course. The question is how many attacks we can unlock. And how quickly/easily we can swap them out, given the limit on the number we can have active. The issue with DAIs limit was if you encountered an enemy you hadn't fought before, your loadout might not be that useful, and even if you did have skills/abilities/spells that would help, you couldn't change them while in active combat. The same was also true if you got 'surprised' by an attack (although, that was admittedly rare in DAI).

Normal, heavy/ charged (or maybe both?), jump attacks. Those should always be available to us.

I admit I haven't followed the news/discussion about the combat too closely. We've known (or known it was highly likely) since before Mark Darrah left Bioware that "Dragon Age 4" would have the most action heavy combat of the series, so when that proved to be true, I guess I just shrugged internally. I was actually sort of happy that we'll get that pause function for the activated abilities (Forspoken also used this, you could either massively slow down the action, like a "Concentration" mechanic, or pause it altogether). Have they said we'll have 'combos' for our combat? Like Fast - Fast - Fast - Hold Heavy to unlock X special move. That kind of thing?

Review bombing isn't done by a single person.
It is when there is a concentrated effort to negatively affect a review score from multiple people because of a complaint about something that has nothing to do with the quality of the game/movie/TV Show.

DA2's Auto-Attack feature made me feel awesome when my warrior Hawke hit the enemy in the face. Whaack! and the face exploded.... very satisfying since it's the one end only time I could play as a tank. Now, watching Rook attacking with a sword feels remote... not personal. I don't get that sense of a "solid" hit.... more like a glancing blow. If you watch Varric/Lace/Neve their "hits" are more of a tap.
Jump attacks belong in the Marvel heroes comix / movies. More "silly" attacks won't improve my feelings regarding the mechanic.

And remember, don't accurately describe their opinions as hateful. I took a screenshot of the current state of the Steam Veilguard forums.... imgur.com/a/Zds0YQc

How DARE they not like what I like! Because my like is the ideal like. My like is the final evolution of all likes.
