Seesh we have a 10 page thread over brothels?! We really need to get some news quickly. Hopefully Bioware sees this thread to know having a brothel in the game is vital to the players playthrough.

What made me become obsessed with Bioware was that when I found them in 2016 they were my first experience having a game that recognized I was *a woman* and that I could fall in love while saving the world. Or trying to keep the family together, ala DA2. The only other experience I'd had where my gender mattered was what men I could marry in Harvestmoon. It legit changed me and my standards for games. That was me in 2007 with Mass Effect. My mind was blown. The novelty of it wore off at some point though and these days I just want to get lost in a great story and world. And I enjoy seeing the world through the eyes of an interesting character which is why I much prefer semi set characters to blank slates. So I don't mind playing a male character. Disco Elysium is great, I'm sad you dismissed it because you have to play a deadbeat drunk man. But yeah it's different when you can play distinctly what you identify as. I get it. On a general note, I'm really sorry this thread has gone bonkers because of me. I'm having a bit of a rough time health wise and mentally. This always leads to overanalyzing everything to an annoying degrees trying to find patterns in everything. It helps to distract me. Just stop posting here and I'll shut up.

In terms of overall fanbase I wonder if it wouldn't be the opposite. Given all the romance bickering I've observed since the start they may have lost as many as they've gained. Life would have certainly been easier for the devs since they are expected to double the number of romances in each game from the last, keep every romance unique to a particular orientation with equal representation for said orientation...I couldn't even begin guess how many that would be for DAV. Lol, at that point you really might as well hand over the IP to the Sims maker. I would say that BioWare games sort of became more and more like dating sims over time and this attracted a specific crowd. My guess is that many old school fans who liked the grim dark vibe didn't really care all that much about the romances so BioWare lost them with DAI. They moved on and the fanbase has changed since. That's just my impression. Obviously there are still plenty of DA fans left who enjoyed all 3 games, myself included. But DAI already had me worried about where all this diversity and inclusion would lead when they try to cater to everyone, especially with the romances. It just becomes this huge annoying time sink thing when you want to do right by everyone. Which is why Obsidian doesn't do romances. It's just a huge mess in this day and age trying to offer everyone proper representation. Which BioWare probably realized and went for pansexual. Just too much work otherwise taking away from other areas of the game that should be more important. Obsidian does do romances. Just not for every game. And those games that do have them, they are a pretty minor part of the game. Not these huge dating sim productions Bioware has turned them into.

It's just a huge mess in this day and age trying to offer everyone proper representation. Which BioWare probably realized and went for pansexual. Just too much work otherwise taking away from other areas of the game that should be more important. This might sound sexist but it seems like BioWare became more and more popular among female gamers especially because of the romances. Women overall like different games and things in games than men is my impression. When I look at my game library and compare it to those of my male friends it just vastly different. Even when they're also huge RPG fans. So I would throw out this highly speculative opinion that BioWare caters mostly to women and gay people now. Which is fine. They can do whatever they want. That audience gets to enjoy romances that many other games don't offer. But it's a different audience form the one that liked DAO and has grown largely alienated since. And that's why there is so much negativity and contempt for DAV from certain DAO fans. They want old BioWare back. So do I for that matter but I still liked DAI a lot. I have long since accepted that old BioWare is dead and that New BioWare is going in a different direction. One that I am extremely wary of but I'll give DAV a chance at least. If only to confirm my worst fears. I just gotta know. As a huge fan of old Bioware (think KOTOR, ME trilogy, DAO) I have found myself better served with BG3 and CDPR (Cyberpunk and Witcher) than with DA2/DAI/MEA. Larian and CDPR feel more like OG Bioware, the kind of games they might have made today. Owlcat too.

Blackwall is the only romanceable companion in Dragon Age games that I find genuinely attractive. He's not the only (male) companion that i find attractive, but it's so rare to see people saying that they find him attractive. I still can't get over the fact that over the years i saw so many people call him ugly old man. He is the perfect middle ages inspired fantasy RPG human warrior in terms of appearance. Well-groomed soldier men in these type of games are just not believable!

I once saw a beardless Blackwall picture and, damn, quite handsome really underneath. I like his story and how he can turn out. It was just unfortunate that my inky was a bit of a cheeky banter type and he did NOT respond well to that. They didn't get along. The man was just too serious to be appealing. (Had fun banter with Sera though.) In RL though quiet steady men are good relationship material. It's the charming ones that are trouble. I should really watch all romance arcs I never got round to on YT. I did all of them in Mass Effect but only did a couple at best in each DA game.

He's boring old man to me if that helps... I don't think he's old at all. I get that there are young folks, teens even, among DA fans, but i was 25 when DAI was released and i never understood why sp many people called him old. To me he looks like he's in his early 40s. P.S. At this point it makes sense to rename thread to "DA romances" or something like that

Brothels is one of the most popular companions right now (according to the number of pages, at least), up there with Lucanis and Harding. Brothels is trending. Who'd have thought?

Yes...it's because....he's an ELF! There...I said it; I said what we're all thinking! It's because he's an elf and not a human! That is admittedly a reason why some people aren't interested in him, but people not romancing him for that reason are generally quiet about it and prefer to focus on the people they are romancing. Also, I have heard other gay men say that they were more than a bit turned off by the way that the first two games just assumed that we would all want elves. Really? Huh...and here I was, attempting to have a little fun at the very bad, obvious reason why people are probably complaining. I want to reply in kind to them about this by saying, "Know how many humans my DA characters pursued? One - Leliana; I went with Merrill, no one, and now (presuming this game wins me over enough to play it) Harding." So you don't like that he's an elf. Who cares? Wait and see how well it's written first, or his VA, or both! I swear to God....I hate the internet some days....

First, don't apologize for that. In fact, this thread went into wonderful discourse while remaining very civil still. So that's a big plus! Second, distractions are always good, especially when needed the most (I should know).
Third - oh man, Disco Elysium was such a banger. I felt so bad for Harry, going through his past and his life...but with how it ended for me, I felt very hopeful for his future. While not the longest game, most certainly worth a playthrough or a watch on YT. Just...be warned - there is a lot of serious topics that the game goes into, and if you are very sensitive to such things, then you might want to skip it.

They're definitely the loudest contingent of complainers. Just that when you look at other demographics, different dynamics start to show themselves. Also, it's a bit rich to lecture other demographics about when they should be grateful for when your demographic always has multiple choices.

The irony in all this is that DA4 was developed during peak woke insanity, and it shows, but will be released only later this year, now that the tide is (finally) turning. In any case, it should be interesting to see the sales numbers and, if things don't turn out as expected, amusing to watch the subsequent smear campaign against the so-called 'toxic fans'.

If we have brothel and people who player can "intimate" with, that would be good.
A character (Or two) that ROOK can discus with outside companion (and Solas). Who have something new to talk with ROOK when ROOK progress main story.

I miss the days when Bioware was the best videogame company and never disappointed. That is the hope, but let's be honest here - things are probably looking grim for them. As I said before - Andromeda was greeted with a lukewarm reception at best, and Anthem was D.O.A. This game is going to be do-or-die for BioWare. It can be successful - just so long as EA doesn't expect insane numbers.
Which...of course they will - it's EA we're talking about here...

If the game is genuinely good, then all the pre-release misgivings will mean nothing. There’ll be plenty of articles trumpeting BioWare’s return to form and word of mouth will get around.
However, if DATV turns out to be just OK or actually bad, and it sinks the studio, then what is truly lost? I’d rather the Dragon Age franchise die than see it sink into mediocrity.

I want to see Brothels in the game not so much for having Brothels as much as it shows their willingness to not get squeamish when it comes to mature content. I gave them the benefit of the doubt in DAI due to the fact that we were in charge of a quasi religious organization and it wouldn't make sense for the friggin Herald of Andraste to visit a whore house but here there is no reason for Rook to not have that option. If they get squeamish about Brothels what else will Bioware get soft about especially when we are in friggin Tevinter the land that is supposed to be infested with blood magic using magisters and slavers.

if DATV turns out to be just OK or actually bad, and it sinks the studio, then what is truly lost? I’d rather the Dragon Age franchise die than see it sink into mediocrity. This is why I never wanted another Mass Effect game even before we saw how Andromeda turned out. I didn't want a possibly mediocre game to piss on the trilogy's legacy. MEA kinda did for me but as it's only loosely connected to the trilogy I can just ignore it. NOT looking forward to the next ME, especially not with returning beloved characters. They'll just get butchered, I know it. I fully expect DAV to be the kind of mediocre again that we didn't need. At this point I just want the story to be told in full they got me invested in so long ago. And tbh I'd take closure to a story over not getting one even if it's not good storytelling. But in general I agree that if you don't have another compelling story to tell, just don't even try.
