These aren't games for children. They are suppose to be mature games that aren't afraid of adult themes. Besides it's optional content if the brothels make anyone uncomfortable they don't have to visit them. Frankly the "waste of resources" argument gets overused alot. The point of playing a roleplaying game is to roleplay your character as you see fit. That means giving the player options. Indeed, I wish Bioware was like Larian and CDPR. Those two don't shy away from mature/adult themes in any way.

They stated years ago that there would be no brothels. Well that's unfortunate, I wish Bioware was as bold as Larian and CDPR

We can't even have desire demons anymore, so 100% no brothels. The target audience does not like sexy stuff anymore or something. No, they are not necessary at all but I like having them in game for some fun banter. Having desire demons in Tevinter would have been sweet, loved their design in DAO. I don't know why Bioware is dialing down on the sexy stuff in certain regards, but I most definitely don't agree with that stance.

Larian have turn down the sexy stuff after release. And it would be boring, if all games would be the same. Different people have different taste. For me borthels aren't the problem. I only don't like to see thinks i don't want to see. In the games i play i don't need saving from nudity, but in DA:TV i will use it.

I'd settle for a 'The Hanged Man' kinda place, hookers adult professional companions can hang if they want to. Heck, nowadays if you look around like half of your classmates are sugar babies and your favorite barista moonlights as a stripper, like, literally no one cares. Just give me a rowdy bar with a diverse, fun crowd. The dwarf bartender lady might be on OnlyFans OnlyDeepRoads and we don't know about it. Leave some things to the imagination... y'know?

Genuinely curious: are these places called brothels still? I remember seeing someone (probably on X or TikTok?) go: "I prefer being called a 'high-intimacy scene performer yada yada' (something along the lines, long title), because p0rnstar is derogatory". And I'm like, what's wrong with p0rnstar? People used to wear t-shirts that read "I'm a p0rnstar!" and it was cool. Like, am I getting old? The pendulum is swinging way too fast, what's happening...? 😩

I don't see how the word pornstar is derogatory either, if anything "high intimacy scene performer" sounds like a joke.

I wouldn't expect anything like brothels in a game that replaced the word "race" with "lineage" because the former is now ick.
Slaves are probably going to be "indentured employees with different levels of agency" or some such.
But all things considered I'd prefer them to use their resources for story and gameplay related stuff anyway.

Having desire demons in Tevinter would have been sweet, loved their design in DAO. The odd thing about the desire demon if it was simply reflecting sexual desire is that they only ever took on feminine form. Now according to Dorian, when he undertook the Tevinter equivalent of the Harrowing, he encountered a rather desirable masculine demon in the Fade, which made sense as the demons we encountered in DAO would have been no temptation at all. It would be funny to encounter one and a companion sees it differently to you (as happened with the little nightmare demons in Into the Abyss) but since all the companions are now bi/pan-sexual I assume that is not going to happen. Since Desire demons are meant to be the second most powerful after Pride and the alter ego is Purpose (Solas' only remaining friend after the loss of Wisdom), we ought to be encountering some Desire demons at some point but since desire can take many forms that are not entirely associated with sex, presumably the demons would vary in appearance too.

My main objection is that the brothels and sex work generally was depicted as just a bit of fun, except when used by a blood mage to capture Templar recruits. That is not the reality even in the lore books. Zevran's mother was forced into prostitution by the Crows after their murder of his father left her to pay off his debts. There were likely plenty of other people in her situation working in brothels run by criminal gangs or being trafficked by them. Remember in Tevinter, no one cares what your sexuality is provided you restrict your activities to behind closed doors with slaves or in the downtown brothel (which is where Alexius first found Dorian). So, if they include brothels they also ought to address the darker side of this industry, which is just the same in the real world. If they are not prepared to do that, then I prefer they leave them out altogether. I think it would be possible to have a high class brothel where the sex workers aren't slaves and abused. There are expensive prostitutes in real life that make a lot of money and they enjoy it. They are not the majority obviously. But it could be done in a way that is not offensive or insensitive. This is a roleplaying game supposedly so why not let players pay for sex. That itself shouldn't be problematic. But I'd be up for showing brothels with slave workers to illustrate just how abusive (Tevinter) society can be. DA2 had some dark uncomfortable shit. Like those kidnapped elven children. Or everything to do with Hawke's mother. So I support a brothel as a realistic part of any city. Be it lighthearted (roleplaying opportunity) or dark (storytelling opportunity). Either way is fine by me. But this series has been moving away from certain uncomfortable themes since everyone gets triggered by everything these days apparently so I never expected brothels to be back. Or desire demons.

Well, now that everyone wants to fuck everyone anyway, then just send a male and a female desire demons. Or just randomly have one seduce a companion. It shouldn't matter which one anymore! If they are all pansexual what's the problem? I mean, if they want to be super progressive they can send a demon with both female and male parts.

I mean, if they want to be super progressive they can send a demon with both female and male parts. You mean like Slaanesh daemons in Warhammer or at least how they used to be...? We can't have stuff like that, that would be too much for the "modern audience" (the one that rhymes with broke) they want to appeal to in games these days.

Well, I support other women, I support h00kers, desire demons, and their right to representation in games. Come at me, IDC. What's a young, desire demon prostitute at home gonna feel like, when she can't see herself at all represented in Veilguard? The pride demon was featured in the gameplay reveal, I bet that was a stab in poor desire's heart. Let us uplift and empower, celebrate, let's be light and fluffy... instead of shaming, problemat...izing(... that a word?) everything. Desire has the *right* to support herself however she wants! You don't like desire demons? Cool, the games usually let you kill them. Don't like brothels? You don't need to go there. It's not like there's gonna be a quest requiring you to hire their services and you can't miss out on the XP. You know what was gross? The Broodmother's lair, and I powered through it, like the goddamn hero that I am! 😡 Brothels, like bars, like shops, castles, banks, freaking Templar barracks... really, like anything else, can make for a richer in-game world that looks alive - if done right. TBH I don't even feel that strongly... or at all, about brothels in the game, but honey, this thread has got me going.

Don't like brothels? You don't need to go there. It's not like there's gonna be a quest requiring you to hire their services and you can't miss out on the XP. To be fair you sort of had to go to the Pearl in DAO or you wouldn't meet Isabella and get training in duelist, among other things. Then you had to go to the Blooming Rose to do various quests in DA2. As you say, though, you didn't have to participate personally. I did wonder if all of the sex workers enjoyed their work as much as Jethann did. Brothels, like bars, like shops, castles, banks, freaking Templar barracks... really, like anything else, can make for a richer in-game world that looks alive - if done right. This is true and given the historical period it is meant to be set in they were pretty much a regular part of city life that was definitely on show in certain parts of the urban scene. Most RPG fantasy games I have played have had them in at least one major settlement, so not having one somewhere in DAI was unusual. However, given the fact that the Chantry was behind the pilgrimage to Haven before we used it as a base and then Skyhold was similarly under the auspices of senior members of the Chantry, I can understand from a story PoV why they didn't have them there. It was odd there was not one in Val Royeaux but we did only visit a very small part of the city.

No interessting romance option? Darvin and Lucanis aren't your taste? What have you romanced in the other games?
The pixar mortalitasi is oooolllddd (in Olenna Tyrell's voice) There are no such thing as black elves (glares at Rings of Prime) The Crow has a beard, I cannot abide beards on guys. As for past romance, Alistair and Zevran, Fenris & Anders, Cullen (with a mod) and once iron Bull... for the kinks.

The "women cannot be busty in my games" crowd won't like this thread.
I think if handled right there's a place for all types of hanky-panky which is a part of life and we can have choices not to engage or to engage. I think a 2024 game can handle sex issues and body type issues respectfully. Larian did. I would argue that Witcher 3, and I love that game, got a little leering with it. But Larian did it right.
I am ok with a brothel in game and I am ok with the fact that some might be titillated. Life is really to short to just avoid everything about it. I say this in my mid-50s so I know of what I speak. Enjoy yourselves. You don't have all the time you think you do.
