I'm finding the game to be a joy. Though I am progressing very slowly on account of the high difficulty.

I have only played for 4.5 hours so far. The combat is so much different and takes getting used to. The graphics are gorgeous. Some of the dialogue is pretty bad. I'm still salty they basically don't care about your previous choices.
Right now I'd give it a 3.5. It looks like it's going to be a fun game but not the Dragon Age I've come to know and love.

I think thats the most disappointing part of the game. There is really no good excuse for ignoring basically all our choices from the previous games especially since they end up using some fan favourite characters from them anyway and this game is a direct continuation of Inquisition. They had 10 years to deliver and instead took lazy short cuts. I had my problems with Inquisition but thought the way it included your past choices was great.

I give a 3 for now. Depending on the rest of the playthrough, I could give it a 4
I cannot give it a 5 because they removed the controlling companion mechanic. That is something I really enjoyed having in the previous games.

More comments after finishing "Shadows Crossing" and "The Singing Blade". Some spoilers inside. In general, the game looks very, very good, story is ok. I very much dislike the action-focused combat but I can live with it. Meanwhile, character writing and delivery is very, very weak, which will, if this continues, be *the* major flaw from my point of view. I wish I had my DAO team. Or my DA2 team. Or my DAI team. Either one would do, if they brought their voices and way of talking with them. Mission: Shadows Crossing ++ The environment looks really good ++ The story takes a darker turn -- Character dialogue delivery does not reflect that at all - Too many locked portals. I'm afraid I'll forget that there is something to unlock should it be optional. + Morrigan doesn't sound quite like herself, but it's good to see her again - It appears photo mode doesn't work during dialogue - There is a very sudden cut to the next scene and into the next mission without any explanation
Mission: The Singing Blade ++ The environment looks really good -- The starting conversation is a painfully stereotypical appeal to togetherness. I wish I had my DAO Team. Or my DA2 team. Or my DAI team. - Climbing animations are noticeably low-quality and less fluid than they should be ++ You can compare and equip new equipment when finding it, without having to go to your inventory. Neat. -- The game lacks jumping controls. Either I do it automatically, or I can't do it at all. - Horde defense with enemies appearing out of nowhere again. I hate it. ++ I'm curious about what happens to Harding. Promises to be interesting - ´I don't like being teleported back to the base automatically when a mission is finished. -- Post mission Lighthouse conversation lack weight and characters lack personality.

Around 8 hours in. I like it but I can't tell if I love it yet. I'm waiting for a big reveal that will get things going.
So far Rook as a character feels like a stand in for the real hero to take over.
Environments are beautiful tho and I'm glad that Bellara is less annoying than I assumed she is going to be.

I like Bellara. Sue me. The notifications are occasionally distracting and I wish I could limit them to specific types. I still can't quite shake the feeling this is an R-rated Pixar game because of the art-style. It's just so hard to take certain elements and monsters seriously because I have become so attached to the way they've been depicted in the past three games, so I have to think of them in terms of how they're styled now for "lore reasons". Yes, this is supposed to be a scary Ogre, this is supposed to be an Intimidating Heartless Pride demon, and so on. I have gotten past the Big Head mode NPCs and it's not really as jarring as it was in preview content for me now. Yes, I spent way too much time deciding which freeform dreads my Rook would have, just because it's actually great to be able to do that in a CC. I finally have more than a variation of a bald haircut, bland rows, or extremely small 'fro to choose from. Spoiler: Character Cameo Seeing Morrigan was great. Looking forward to seeing just how far they go with her character given what we know about the decisions in Inquisition.

First impressions after finishing the prologue and leaving base for the next quest: Biggest issue so far: I can't recreate my Inquisitor due to lack of correct hair color (white) or style, and nose options. Basically same issues I had trying to recreate the first Hawke I wanted to import. If anyone can figure out how to make an Inq look like this, please tell me because I can't figure it out.
This is what I ended up with: I guess I can blame her shitty looks on 10 years of Dread Wolf dreams. The jogging animation is awful but I refuse to slow walk everywhere.
No quick save, again, and a 100 slot save limit. However, at least we can name saves so we know where in the story we're at instead of just "in the Hinterlands."
I can't really comment on the story so far because I already saw most of what I've done in the gameplay preview/1 hour prologue showcase. So, haven't seen anything new yet.
The locations are pretty but I don't feel like I can see much given the narrow pathways we are forced to follow. I guess I'm used to the more wide open spaces now and these are making me feel a bit cramped.
So, a 3 for me, but if the story gets good (and I finally get to meet Davrin and Lucanis) then it might go up.

From what i played and what i have seen. 3/5 Could go up higher if i see the big impacked choices have (some people said they are in the game). Not so sure if i like the main story that much. I will wait and see. I don't like the german voice acting, maybe change to engl would help. At the moment my ranking goes:
DAO - 8/10 DAI/DATV - 6/10 DA2 - 4/10

Me too. I thought that her voice acting and dialogue when you first meet her was a bit jarring, but after playing the rest of her recrutement mission, D'Meta Crossing and then bringing her with me for exploration and for Neve's mission, i started to really like her. Some reviewers who found her annoying at first said that there was a moment where her story takes an unexpected turn, which made them to change their mind about her. Can't wait to reach that moment, considering that i already like her.

A couple thoughts from me. I have played around 9 hours and have recruited Bellara and here's the good stuff: - The game looks gorgeous to me. I never had a problem with the style, I love it. The environments look so good and are definitely reminding me of Inquisition. - The combat is a lot of fun. I play Mage on Adventurer and so far didn't die, but there were like 3 or 4 close calls because I messed up my dodging The potion pots are imo pretty fair placed. I can't wait to gain more points, mana and abilities. The skill tree is really great. It took some time getting used to everything, but I felt comfortable with it rather quickly. Dagger and Orb combo is - I like the Lighthouse, it's pretty neat and not too big. - I like playing Rook so far, but I have planned a personality that so far I could easily roleplay. It won't be so easy with other ideas, it feels a bit more limited than before. That is technically not a problem for me, as in DA I tend to play "nicer" characters anyway, but it is definitely limiting for others. - I actually like the UI... A LOT. The menu is beautifully designed, and I'm not put off by purple (and I HATE pinkish stuff usually). The menu is clean, uncluttered, neat. The negative: - The writing is kinda all over the place. Some stuff I really liked (Solas/Rook, Varric/Rook conversations, the few short talks with companions in the Lighthouse), but sometimes it's quite off. What I dislike most is there's so many Captain Obvious moments, or stuff gets repeated multiple times within even one conversation. Is that really for generation TikTok who can't follow a scene for more than 30 seconds? I think it's strange, considering the notes and codices seem to be written in the usual quality imo. - The timing of some hints from companions in the areas to use something is quite off too, like sometimes it should have triggered earlier (which makes for the Captain Obvious moments ). - The voice delivery is very odd sometimes. Rook is actually super good imo (playing mid-pitch British male, love it). Neve is a strange case. I love her voice, but it is quite unnatural in its tone. I think I read she was forced to sound deeper than she is? If so, it shows. Mixed on: - Soundtrack is decent so far, some ambient stuff in Arlathan Forest sounds super nice and relaxing, but it is overall too early to say if it is a really great OST. Can't wait though to hear more - The decision/choice display is interesting. It doesn't really bother me but definitely takes some time to get used to. I am used to hunting trigger points in games for dialogue to appear, so to have it spelled out is pretty weird. But it can be a good thing I guess. Overall I do enjoy it so far and it has elements of Bioware magic. Time will tell how much certain things will bother me, but I am still open-minded. Even if I end up not liking it, I don't regret buying it.

The prologue is a rushed disjointed mess. I can't believe Rook's recruitment basically happens in a blink of an eye like in the gameplay demo. They didn't cut anything. Barely enough time to process who your character is supposed to be before all hell breaks loose. I thought the ME3 prologue was rushed and bad but this is worse.
The dialogue so far has been but a short easy to digest rundown of the basic story background for new players. No time for an actual conversation. It's just action action action. Pretty bad.
Doesn't feel like a BioWare game anymore. Feels like somebody bought the franchise and made a kid version of Dragon Age with none of the charm.
I can't believe we're smashing urns for potions like we're Link. What childish unimmersive nonsense is that for a BioWare game??? And those glowing gold pouches lying around? This game still feels like the live service game they scrapped. Everything reminds me of it.
I guess this game is fine for 12 year olds who have never played an RPG before and just want some easy action. If I pretend this isn't Dragon Ages I guess I could give it a 3/5 for smooth gameplay and nice looking environments. Game runs well. As a Dragon Ages game it's a complete insult. 1/5 would be too generous.

I'm not that far into the game, have just recruited Lucanis, and my problems with the game are the ridiculous looting animation and lack of any introduction to Rook. Bioware seems to rely too much to codex entries in DAVE (and I also didn't like the introductory moment of a certain character in the Jumpers' camp). But I'm enjoying the environment, the soundtrack, the humour and even though the vibe is centuries away from DAO, it plays good. 3/5 for me thus far.

I'm enjoying it so far. The only reason it's not 5/5 for me is because a 3 player character limit is painfully restricting when I have to share the game with my spouse. (RIP, my Veil Jumper, we'll meet again sometime.)

Neve is a strange case. I love her voice, but it is quite unnatural in its tone. I think I read she was forced to sound deeper than she is? If so, it shows. Same. She has a nice voice but the line delivery is so very weird. I still plan to romance her but I hope her acting doesn't put me off her character. If she's anything like in Tevinter Nights I should like we a lot though. So fingers crossed. I have to say that overall I'm not sold on the voice acting of anyone yet. Even Harding. Then again I haven't heard much of them yet given how dialogue has been kept to a bare minimum of plot relevant cues in the prologue. Btw is the voice actor of Solas the same as before? Either I don't remember right or he sounds very different. Everything feels off in this game... Going to play a couple more hours now.

He has some words and phrases that he pronounces exactly like in DAI. Even Varric sounds a liiittle different to me from time to time. Perhaps a difference in voice direction (they have a new director now, right?), aging voice actors/other things. No clue how old they actually are. But 10 years is also a long time, not sure how that weighs in or how they re-prepared for a role.
I never particularly liked Harding's voice in DAI, so there's that Though I have to say whenever there were emotional/distress moments, Harding/Bellara sound good and convey the emotion well enough.

Got few hours today and may get a few more tomorrow.
Better than I thought in some aspects and worse in others.
I didn't like the combat at all. It feels just like in inquisition that your attacks don't have enough weight to them and I never played a game with damage sponges I liked.
While the dialogue is much better than I thought it would be for the most part, the plot is much worse than I thought. Sometimes things are over explained, sometimes no explanations are given, the lore of the series is made into a salad, and it feels like whenever the writers didn't have an answer to something they wrote "elven gods"

I'm enjoying it a lot. Combat is fun and the story has been interesting. I just picked up Lucanis and he's a lot more likeable than I expected.
I like Rook's British female VA, though in general I agree the DAI cast was much better.
I agree with observations that the writing - or the dialogue, at least - seems more simple in Veilguard than in DAI. I'm hoping dialogue improves as we progress in the story and relationships are built.
The music has been a massive disappointment. I had reservations about the music before the launch, and unfortunately the 12 hours I played today only reinforced my impressions. I especially dislike the main theme - it reminded me of Batman before, it still reminds me of Batman now, and playing the game hasn't helped to dispel that impression.

After 4 hours, I was thinking 4/5. After 8 hours, I feel it is slipping to more like 3.5/5.
The quality of the dialogue and voice direction doesn't seem as high quality as usual for a BioWare game. And the constant overexplaining of the plot and objectives from our companions during main quests is grating. I fear that will be even worse on replays.
On the plus side I love the CC and my Rook's voice (British male). The prologue was good and some early content with Solas and at the Lighthouse.
Unfortunately main quest line has been hit or miss for me thus far. Also frustrating that we often meet interesting characters but have no opportunities to ask questions to know more about them and their faction or the surrounding area.
It reminds me a lot of Jedi Survivor with slightly more RPG elements. That's not exactly bad but not what I'm looking for out of a DA game.
Still plenty of room for improvement as the game goes along. I haven't had many choices with real tangible consequences yet but I hear there are some big ones, so looking forward to that.

After playing for about 12 hours i gotta say. The writing is so inconsistent in DAVe, it feels like different parts of the game were written by completely different writing teams.
I thought the prologue, D'Meta Crossing and Neve's mission where you visit the Docks for the first time were ok. I can't say they were really good, but not bad either. I liked boss fight in Neve's mission tho.
I disliked Bellara's recruitment mission (as i said earlier, i like her character, but this whole quest was nothing but info dumping for the most part. Like, i really don't know what happened here) and all conversations with Harding so far are just so fucking weird. I never cared for Harding's character, but she wasn't like that in DAI. And her voice acting is getting on my nerves. I thought that Neve will be the one whose voice acting i won't like. And while i can't say that it's the best performance of a year, i think i start to like it. Not really care for her character, but i wouldn't say she's badly written. Maybe just not my cup of tea.
However, i really liked conversations with Solas, Varric, Bellara and Lucanis. And Lucanis' mission so far is the best mission in entire game. Idk, it just felt very Dragon Age to me.
And i think codex entries were just as good as they always were.
Can't say anything about companions' banter, because so far i only saw it once, so it's hard to judge.
I still don't know what to think of Rook. Sometimes i like his dialogue, sometimes i don't. However, i'm glad that faction reactivity is better in DAVe compared to how Inquisitor's race was handled in DAI.

I give a 3 for now. Depending on the rest of the playthrough, I could give it a 4 I cannot give it a 5 because they removed the controlling companion mechanic. That is something I really enjoyed having in the previous games. Yeah, I keep thinking of it as Dragon Effect. Specifically, Dragon Effect: Andromeda, since it looks like some of ME:A's bad ideas were kept

So with 55 votes in it's a 3.3...which is right where I predicted it would be.

Question; it’s been so long, I can’t actually remember if non-moderators have the ability to see who has voted? Not what the individual voted for, but just a list of the members who have voted.
The reason I ask, is because looking at that list…there are, by my count, at least 6 people who are either lying in the Skepticism thread, or voting without having played it.
