I voted 5/5 because it's not just a 3/5 (enough money to buy a good engine) and I make a point not being that guy who rates restaurants they loved "4 out of 5" because of the fleeting nature of perfection awarded lightly compromising my integrity as a world reknown rater of restaurants and fuck if that single mom waitress needs steady employment.
What are we taking about?

After playing for about 12 hours i gotta say. The writing is so inconsistent in DAVe, it feels like different parts of the game were written by completely different writing teams.
I thought the prologue, D'Meta Crossing and Neve's mission where you visit the Docks for the first time were ok. I can't say they were really good, but not bad either. I liked boss fight in Neve's mission tho.
I disliked Bellara's recruitment mission (as i said earlier, i like her character, but this whole quest was nothing but info dumping for the most part. Like, i really don't know what happened here) and all conversations with Harding so far are just so fucking weird. I never cared for Harding's character, but she wasn't like that in DAI. And her voice acting is getting on my nerves. I thought that Neve will be the one whose voice acting i won't like. And while i can't say that it's the best performance of a year, i think i start to like it. Not really care for her character, but i wouldn't say she's badly written. Maybe just not my cup of tea.
However, i really liked conversations with Solas, Varric, Bellara and Lucanis. And Lucanis' mission so far is the best mission in entire game. Idk, it just felt very Dragon Age to me.
And i think codex entries were just as good as they always were.
Can't say anything about companions' banter, because so far i only saw it once, so it's hard to judge.
I still don't know what to think of Rook. Sometimes i like his dialogue, sometimes i don't. However, i'm glad that faction reactivity is better in DAVe compared to how Inquisitor's race was handled in DAI.
I'm pretty sure it's probably true. this game feels like it was made by more than one team in many occasions, and it's true. the experience reminds me of FFXII, where you reach a certain point and not only the story gets less good, the storytelling and direction feels very different. I think in FFXII it wasn't bad enough to ruin the game though.

Score's held steady. The vote has doubled and still around 3.3/5 from BSN And in case anyone is wondering, I haven't voted

The reason I ask, is because looking at that list…there are, by my count, at least 6 people who are either lying in the Skepticism thread, or voting without having played it. Wouldn't surprise me. I mean some guy bought 2 copies of Starfield for one for PC and one for Xbox just to review bomb the game. I have not voted since I haven't bought the game. Since this is a spoiler free thread I've been paying attention to this poll so I can decide whether or not to buy the game.

If you plan on playing on Steam the advice a lot of people give these days is to buy it on Steam and try and get a lot done in 2 hours to try and get a feel for the game, and if you don't like it just return it The other way of finding people who reflect your opinions in games is a bit spoilery

It's true, but this game had different directors and was a live service online game at one point etc. I'm sure the script went through many many revisions.

But when I do I will do as you say.

We never know for sure how the writing process is. I think I recall reading somewhere that at least for ME3, the writer for each squad mate etc. also wrote Shepard in their scenes together, and someone made sure the general tone was fitting. If it is the same here, that each writer wrote companion and Rook in their scenes, it might explain Rook feeling a bit inconsistent here and there. I can't complain about my Rook so far though, really liking him and how I can respond with him.
And I finished recruiting Lucanis earlier. That was pretty good, liked it a lot, also the scenes afterwards. The general mission design is not bad I think. Recruiting for example Sera and Viv in DAI always felt too fast and strange. Here the road to the actual joining is longer and you learn more about the characters right away. It's quite nice.

Game is going very good for me so far. Took a hot minute to get used to the combat but I think I am well on the way to getting the basics down. The quesion will then became can I actually A. understand this complicated skill tree enough to look up the tool tips and learn those and then B. actually execute those combinations since I usually have trouble doing that in ARPGs, even ones I like. So we'll see.

I'm 10 hours in and it just seems to be an action game.
When I was 6 hours in people assured me it was going to open up and have hubs and stuff... and that still hasn't happened.

I got into a part of the game when I felt like I was in a Disney movie, so quite a bit of up and down. I think my fav might be Davrin and I guess that's because he's hot. The rest are boring me to tears. Going to be a rough ride.

I am purposely avoiding any of the button mashing combos that have come up. I'll use the 1/2/3/4 shortcuts for abilities and the special E overpower or whatever move, but that's about it. I have been using the ring thing for companion abilities but not due to any strategy - mostly just 'cause it's there. I do like the option at the top center to have them both attack the same target as Rook.

I peeped some skills that buff the beam attack in a way that makes it very strong AND regenerates enough mana that you can simply melt things non-stop. It would basically turn the Mage into a third-person shooter, like Ryder with a beam-emitter weapon. I'm going to try it, eventually, but I'm doing my melee mage first.

Gonna need a bit more data to make this hypothesis stick. I remember people complaining that Bio needed to fire the people who wrote NWN1 and hire back the BG2 people.

These things still exist and they have many of the classic abilities from previous games in them, I just noticed even just glancing at the rogue tree like leaping shot and what not. Mind you I am not sure I will be especially good at them and may give up like I did for a lot of the prompts in God of War...but I also intend on making a concerted effort to try given how much good stuff there is in there.

I'm only a few hours in, since I had to restart after missing the "Customize Your Inquisitor" option. 🤦🏻♂️
I'm liking the game so far, though some of the criticisms here are definitely fair. The companion dialogue is uneven. The Captain Obvious stuff has repeatedly had me cursing the TV, "STFU!" Yet, other times they're good. There hasn't yet been enough banter, and too much lore dump and Captain Obvious. I hope that improves.
I like Rook. I'm playing Human Male, Mourn Watch Mage, British Voice/Medium Pitch. He's been great, though it looks impossible to be anything but friendly, or at least cordial.
I'm enjoying the combat quite a bit, despite an annoying sluggish latency. I'd have preferred more snappy responsiveness. I'm a "character build" guy, and I can already see so many Mage builds buried in the overly designed (for my tastes) skill tree. I look forward to trying at least two this playthrough, thanks to free retraining.
The very gamist elements like color-coded health pots and glowing sacks of gold are terrible. I hate that kind of stuff.
So far, I'm tempted to give it a 4, but a 3 is also very fair. The two conversations I've had with Solas are the story highlights thus far. Even early on, he managed to drop a huge lore nugget that Rook didn't even acknowledge or seem to catch. Minus Solas, I'd give it a 3. I'm giving a tentative 4, subject to change.

Are you playing a Mage? The targeting is a bit "off" with their ranged basic attacks, in my experience. I'm good at shooters with controllers, and I still throw more than a few magical bolts into empty space or at the wrong target. Maybe there's a method to it that I've yet to discover. I bet you'll feel way better with KB&M.

It's true, but this game had different directors and was a live service online game at one point etc. I'm sure the script went through many many revisions. Gonna need a bit more data to make this hypothesis stick. I remember people complaining that Bio needed to fire the people who wrote NWN1 and hire back the BG2 people. Staff turnover The project has been marked by a high turnover of leading staff. Several veteran Dragon Age staff, including Laidlaw, left the company in response to Joplin's cancellation in 2017.[29] After the 2018 restart, Mark Darrah remained as an executive producer, while Matthew Goldman took over the position of creative director for the project from 2017 to 2021.[36] By December 3, 2020, Darrah had resigned from BioWare, replaced by BioWare Austin studio head Christian Dailey as executive producer.[37] Goldman left BioWare by November 2021,[31] and was replaced as Creative Director by John Epler.[38] Dailey left BioWare in February 2022.[39] Corinne Busche became game director thereafter, Benoit Houle director of product development, and Mac Walters production director.[39] Walters in turn left BioWare in January 2023.[40] In March 2023, Darrah returned as a consultant for the game and the Mass Effect team joined the production of Veilguard, according to EA.[41][42] In August 2023, BioWare laid off 50 people working on Veilguard and the next Mass Effect game;[43] this included Mary Kirby who was one of the series' original writers and credited with "creating Varric and the Qunari".[44] PC Gamer commented "that's not to say there are no veterans of the good old days left, but you're looking at a very different group of people than the one that made the studio's greatest hits".[44] In October, seven of them sued BioWare for additional compensation, complaining that BioWare's NDAs prevented them from adding their work on Veilguard to their portfolio.[45] out of Wikipedia, might be a suficent answer to the other person as well who claimed "no writer left other than Gaider" It was ten years in which many stuff members were replaced multiple times and playing the game you really feel that. I'm sure it also affected the writing The only writer who left Bioware after DAI AND didn't work on DAVe is David Gaider.

might interest you too I'm aware that Mary Kirby and Lukas Kristjanson were laid off, and that Brianne Battye was moved to another project. This is why i said "AND didn't work on DAVe", because all three of them worked on it. Lay offs happened in 2023 and Battye left in 2024, by that time all of the writing was done.
