I started playing ME2 yesterday since it's free on Origin, and I'm enjoying it much more than I thought I would. (I had previously played the demo and was very much underwhelmed.) I'm playing in small doses so far, because it's the first shooter I've played and I'm not good enough yet to find it relaxing. However, I think I'm mostly getting the hang of things. I just got done recruiting Mordin and spoke to Aria, and purchased a few items that the crew wanted. I'm trying to avoid major spoilers (minor ones are ok) but I did have a few questions: Is there "party banter" like in DA? Jacob and Miranda made occasional comments, but so far they always pertain to whatever mission we are on. Are there any missions that don't center around sneaking around and shooting things? For instance, missions based more around dialogue or exploration? If Shep dies in combat, does player control move to a party member as it does in DA? Or do you need to reload the game at that point? (I know health regenerates when Shep is behind cover, but just in case I decide to get reckless one day...) I chose to play as a sentinel. Is there anything major I should know to make the best use of this class? Speaking of which, I have a little combat drone that doesn't seem to do anything. It just floats there for a bit, and doesn't seem to attack anyone. What am I missing? Not quite, there's some character interaction but not quite like DA or anywhere near as much. Certain characters don't even acknowledge each other's existence(ala Grunt and Thane for instanceAre there any missions that don't center around sneaking around and shooting things? For instance, missions based more around dialogue or exploration? Yes,Thane and Samara's loyalty missions. Also the first portion of Kasumi's LM doesn't involve pew pew.If Shep dies in combat, does player control move to a party member as it does in DA? Or do you need to reload the game at that point? (I know health regenerates when Shep is behind cover, but just in case I decide to get reckless one day...) Shepard dies = you reload from checkpoint. Omega, like Illium and the Citadel are hubs that you can revisit any time prior to the final mission.And most importantly, how can I ensure that Jacob will end up in Shep's pants? You've already been given a pretty full set of answers, so I'll just fill in a few gaps (spoiler below): Is there "party banter" like in DA? In ME1, it's also very limited and must be manually triggered by the player. In ME2, it's pretty much non-existent. In ME3, there is a significant amount of squad banter. I chose to play as a sentinel. Is there anything major I should know to make the best use of this class? There is a section here on the forums that discusses various character and squad mate builds for all 3 games. You may want to go to that section and just open the top pinned thread... which gives links to the various threads in the section sorted by game and then class. (Are you sure you're not an engineer? Sentinels don't have the drone and you probably don't have a squad mate yet that has a drone... Tali or Legion.)Speaking of which, I have a little combat drone that doesn't seem to do anything. It just floats there for a bit, and doesn't seem to attack anyone. What am I missing? You'll be able to add skill points into your drone as you level up that will alter it's characteristics. Advice for the most effective evolution of it are in the thread mentioned above.Is there any way to increase my inventory so I can carry more of those ammo cylinders I keep finding all over the place? You can purchase an Off-Hand Ammo Pack from one of the merchants on the Citadel that will increase your ammo loadout by 10% or 15%. That's the only upgrade to this that I'm aware of. It is an armor piece, so you do have to equip it at the armor terminal (in Shep's cabin). Also, with a little practice, most people don't find it worth the credits you pay for it.
Some of the weapons you'll collect later on do have larger mags.
There is a bit of a cheat - If you're really pressed for ammo after a battle, just save at that point and reload. Quite often some of the placed ammo lying around will respawn and you can refill then. Ammo dropped by your kills, however, will not respawn, so make sure you collect whatever is there first before doing the save and reload.
It also helps to ensure that you reload your gun just before picking up ammo. If you have a partially empty clip in the mag when you collect, that clip won't fill.What about all the upgrades I've been finding that need an engineer or someone in order to upgrade them? Some missions can seem quite a bit tougher if you happen to bring the "wrong" squad with you. Thanks to all of your for your help (even though I'm still at the beginning of ME1, this is going to help me later when I play ME2). I would not have enjoyed the Dragon Age games as much as I did, without the Bioware forum and now, this forum is going to make the ME trilogy a ton more fun than playing it without you guys. I went to bed last night, after male Shepherd died (towards the end of the beacon mission) and that's when I remembered I wanted to play female shepherd (for romance reasons), so I'm going to do some forum reading on game mechanics, before I start the game up again, later today.

I just downloaded ME2 free from Origin. I started ME1 weeks ago. Have been playing almost everyday. Was looking up on ME 2 & realised its free! Now I am controlling myself to complete ME1 first before diving into ME2 Good. And don't ignore side quests. They'll make some degree of difference down the road. Sometimes not until ME3 but the decisions still count.

Yeah, you just planet scan by clicking on a planet and scanning the surface of the planet until you get a large "spike" and then shoot a probe for optimal results. You also get some resources in missions that you can pick up if you find them.

You've already been given a pretty full set of answers, so I'll just fill in a few gaps (spoiler below): Is there "party banter" like in DA? You can purchase an Off-Hand Ammo Pack from one of the merchants on the Citadel that will increase your ammo loadout by 10% or 15%. That's the only upgrade to this that I'm aware of. It is an armor piece, so you do have to equip it at the armor terminal (in Shep's cabin). Also, with a little practice, most people don't find it worth the credits you pay for it.
Some of the weapons you'll collect later on do have larger mags.
There is a bit of a cheat - If you're really pressed for ammo after a battle, just save at that point and reload. Quite often some of the placed ammo lying around will respawn and you can refill then. Ammo dropped by your kills, however, will not respawn, so make sure you collect whatever is there first before doing the save and reload.
It also helps to ensure that you reload your gun just before picking up ammo. If you have a partially empty clip in the mag when you collect, that clip won't fill.What about all the upgrades I've been finding that need an engineer or someone in order to upgrade them? Where do I get this engineer? Is it Mordin? Do the hacking mini-games get harder as Shep levels up? No, they stay about the same throughout the game. You can purchase a Bypass Module and a Hacking Module to slow the clock down on them to make them easier, though. Again, these are upgrades that most people find are not really worth the price. I started playing ME2 yesterday since it's free on Origin, and I'm enjoying it much more than I thought I would. (I had previously played the demo and was very much underwhelmed.) I'm playing in small doses so far, because it's the first shooter I've played and I'm not good enough yet to find it relaxing. However, I think I'm mostly getting the hang of things. I just got done recruiting Mordin and spoke to Aria, and purchased a few items that the crew wanted. I'm trying to avoid major spoilers (minor ones are ok) but I did have a few questions: Is there "party banter" like in DA? Jacob and Miranda made occasional comments, but so far they always pertain to whatever mission we are on. Are there any missions that don't center around sneaking around and shooting things? For instance, missions based more around dialogue or exploration? If Shep dies in combat, does player control move to a party member as it does in DA? Or do you need to reload the game at that point? (I know health regenerates when Shep is behind cover, but just in case I decide to get reckless one day...) I chose to play as a sentinel. I've found that entering a galaxy that has a main mission or side mission in one of the systems there, to go to the other systems and explore(scan) each planet. I usually try to mine each planet down to Moderate levels before I leave. I also tend to mine out the Mission planet till its at Moderate levels before probing the anomaly.

Garrus is my favorite romance out of the series (followed by Kaidan, Thane, then Jacob). I didn't really like Jacob much in ME2. Garrus romance gets even better in 3, which is why it's my favorite over Kaidan and Thane, although those have good moments too. I think ME2 over all has less romance and conversations over all, as characters start to run out of things to say and repeat themselves (where Garrus calibrations joke comes from). Of course these are my opinions, and you might not share them. But if you think you like Garrus more, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Edited to add: Garrus romance definitely has more content in ME3 than Jacobs, but I think they have about the same amount in ME2. Also you'll want to get the Citadel DLC for ME3.

Seconded for Garrus because he's awesome. He was my first ME2/3 romance and I wasn't disappointed one bit.
Note: you can only continue the romance in 3, not start one with him. Also, the romance in 2 won't officially start until after you do his loyalty mission, but this is true for everyone, not just Garrus.

It sort of depends on what you're building up your FemShep's character to be like. Garrus certainly represents the truer, long-term romance. As mentioned, you cannot romance Garrus in ME3 unless you start a romance with him in ME2 and there are some very good scenes in ME3 with Garrus if you do romance him. However, by leaving some side missions undone until after the Suicide Mission, it is technically possible in ME2 to romance both Jacob and Garrus in ME2, one after the other. I just can't remember if the ME3 importer recognizes the second romance. As for popularity, I'm pretty certain Garrus is by far the more popular romance for FemShep in ME2, with the second most popular option probably being to stay loyal to Kaidan or Liara (who you can also re-connect with in ME2 if you have the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC). I don't think the romance with Jacob is a very popular one. ETA: Sorry, I was interrupted and so came back and edited.

So, I've recruited several people and just picked up the Krogan from the lab, and when I got back to the ship I have a message that Illusive wants to talk to me. I went to talk to him and it seems like this activated a major mission (or at least a main story mission?), so I reloaded rather than go forward with it. Is this a major mission that locks out any side quests?
Also, all of my new (old?) friends are too busy to talk to me, so that's a bummer.

It is a main story mission but it shouldn't lock out anything. If you didn't let the krogan out of the tank, the story mission shouldn't be available yet since it requires a minimum number of people to be recruited.
At this point you have: Miranda, Jacob, Mordin, Garrus, Jack, and tank krogan. Do you have either DLC squadmate (Kasumi and Zaeed) installed and/or recruited?
I usually do everything I want to do, then open the tank to trigger the mission.

The mission Illusive Man sends you on is mandatory and triggered after "recruiting" all of the squadmates from your dossiers (Zaeed and Kasumi notwithstanding); so even if you leave the krogan in the tank you've already triggered the mission, which you can complete with or without him. This mission doesn't lock out/cancel side missions.

The trigger for the Horizon mission is having 6 usable squad mates and having done all 4 of the dossier missions... so that means, if you have Zaeed or Kasumi or both, the mission triggers the moment you finish the 4th dossier mission. If you don't have Zaeed or Kasumi and the Krogan is still in his tank, then you wouldn't have 6 usable squad mates even though you've completed the 4 dossier missions, so the game waits to trigger Horizon until after you do acquire that 6th squad mate... either by getting Zaeed or Kasumi or by letting the Krogan out of his tank. You should, however, be able to go to the port cargo area and release the Krogan as long as you do it before either talking to the Illusive Man or trying to access the Galaxy Map. Once you do talk to TIM or try to access the Galaxy Map, the game will automatically take you to the squad selection screen to start the Horizon Mission. Before going to see TIM in the Comms room and before trying to access the Galaxy Map, I would recommend that you speak to any squad mates you want (including the Krogan) and also go to the armor stand in Shepard's cabin and apply any armor upgrades you may have purchased and want to us; and also go to the upgrades terminal in Mordin's space and process any upgrades for which you already have the resources (since you will not be able to scan for more resources since that requires using the Galaxy Map). This mission that is triggering can be a daunting one. Having yourself as upgraded as possible can really help.

Ok, it was always my understanding that only completing the four dossier missions triggered Horizon. I went and played it out again -- not really imperative to your playthough dragon and sorry for any confusion this brings. I'm just a little confused myself now. I recruited (in order): Mordin Garrus Jack Tank Krogan -- did not release him from the tank (which is not actually required, you can leave him in there the entire game.) --Did not recruit Zaeed or Kasumi, but they are in my journal. I still get locked out of the galaxy map and Horizon is still triggered. So I'm wondering how it is that melbella was able to delay the mission? This isn't something I've ever been able to do.

I usually just do the dossiers, and on-the-way hub-type side missions, so I thought I might've been missing something. I do always pick up Zaeed because he's on Omega, but I don't always go to the Citadel before Horizon so I don't always have Kasumi. And actually in my current run I think I just flat-out forgot to release the krogan before Horizon... I don't really want to delay the mission, personally, but it wouldn't be the first time I got something wrong. So I just wanted to make sure.
