Thane: Assassin with a sob story - not a lot of sympathy for hired murderers here
Ashley: Racist bitch with an attitude - that's why she stays - where's that bomb, Virmire?
Pipi PooPoo is MEA but she'd transcend to both slots on her own.

EDI is the easy #1. Banal sexbot attempting to become human trope which is particularly egriegous given ME2 EDI was an interesting concept. It constantly whines about synth rights and my Shepard is forced to basically agree with its inane and ironically anthropocentric babble regardless of dialogue choices like a 73 IQ high school dropout, which forces me to simply ignore it simply for roleplay purposes. Also the romance with Joker is unmitigated cringe.
ME3 Legion sucks in pretty much the same way minus the cringe, but its ME2 arc is even better, and it technically isn't a squadmate by the time the writers manage to ruin it. Plus you can mercy kill it in the Suicide mission so it never is undignified by the Pinnochio narrative and thus remains a pretty thought provoking "what if", so I won't write it off entirely
Morinth is obviously a terrible person and a throwaway waste of developer resources that could've gone into other things, but given how easily she can be ignored is she really worse than laughably written Mary Sue writer's pet Liara?
At least Morinth seems like a real person. Serial killers exist. Bookworm archeology students who are also Mafia bosses who are also CIA spymasters who are also special forces level combatants typically don't. And there's no real way from a roleplaying perspective to have anything other than a friendly relationship with her (also a problem with Garrus but he at least isn't as intergrated into the plot nor is his backstory and skillset totally unjustified), which seems like a basic and fundamental design failure given the genre Mass Effect occupies
Sexbot and Mary Blue, my final word.

I'm curious if people were rating this based on combat or character personality? For example, I love Mordin to death, but I rarely picked him for missions because he was so squishy.
I guess if I were to reframe this question as "If one character had to be eliminated from the Mass Effect trilogy (story and bonus power), who would you miss the least?
My answer would be Zaeed.

Well actually Ashley isn't a racist, the correct term would be xenophobe... LOL. And its something that Shep can talk to her about. She is willing and open to hear Shepard out, her views are not set in stone. To me that makes her more interesting not less.
As for the topic if you asked me 5-10 years ago, I probably would've picked two of Garrus/Tali/Liara on account of feeling like they were jammed down my throat. But now I'd probably say EdiBot and James just for how unnecessary they were. ME3 could've done with a little less catering to new players.

Morinth is the only character I actively dislike. She is simply an entirely unredeemable person.
I don't actively dislike Jacob, but I suppose I do like him the least mainly because I have no reason to care about him. If I try to get to know him better he gets hostile, so why should I bother when there are so many much more interesting people on board?

ME1 - I disliked Kaidan and Ashley, Kaidan is just weird and Ashley has this annoying attitude. In ME2 I disliked Jacob and Miranda. Jacob was just not "likeable", there was nothing about him that made me want to bring him into the squad. And Miranda, Miss perfect "cheerleader" as Jack described her (which I didn't like either BTW, everyone is so amazed by her biotics but to me nothing special, I liked others' powers more) feels just out of place, I never took her into my squad once I recruited other folks. Zaeed has never played not even one mission with me, I haven't used Kasumi as well. And in ME3 the winner is Vega, dumb pile of muscles in my opinion. And then Kaidan goes back to Normandy but not to my squad ever.

Liara - The way she is forced down my throat repeatedly, like ''LOOK SHE IS OUR FAVORITE AND THE CANON ROMANCE BFF; NOW KISS: KISS I SAID OR ELSE!!!!'' makes me really dislike her. Her rather Mary-Sue-Ish character and her powerless whispery voice does not improve things either, but the way she is shoved into my face elevates her from just bland and uninteresting to really freaking annoying.
And Thane. By the almighty, the praying mortally ill Assassin, that's so stereotypical its just super CRINGE. The boo hoo story with his son just made me roll my eyes so hard they almost started to smolder. Nothing more needs to be said here.

Jacob because his skillset is either redundant (Vanguard) or other squadmates have better biotics, imo. Kasumi because her abilities are good, but the 'best' one always ends up with her being downed in my experience.

Revival achieved, themikefest Ashley and Kaiden. They both assume the worst at the wrong times, turn their back on me one time then point a gun at my head another. AFAIK, neither of them are N7 and it shows. Not SPECTR material in any world, getting pwnd by a sexbot. Get off my ship or you'll leave by the airlock.

They assume the wrong thing, sure, but... worked with Cerberus and still maintains ties to his ME2 Squadmates; The Arrival. Either or both makes Shepard seem suspicious. Then Shepard comes in planning to kill a member of the Council and it looks really bad. Note that A/K at no time shot at Shepard. As far as being Spectre material, I agree. They were political appointments. The reason I don't think they belong is that we've seen no evidence that they have the "do whatever it takes no matter the cost" mentality that's required. This is why Shep worked. Shep had no problem going rogue when it suited him. Shutting down the Council when they tried to contact him on the Normandy was itself proof of his willingness to do anything. So was the alliance with Cerberus. We know for a fact that A/K were unwilling to work with Cerberus - even though Garrus and Tali might be present - because they were NOT willing to do what it took to accomplish the mission. In fact, Garrus might have been a good choice because he was also willing to do whatever it took. I think his time as Archangel made this apparent, not to mention everything he said in ME1.

Loyalty is important for me. Without a loyalty mission (could have been a thing in 3, would have been great content!), they were unable to follow me when I needed them. I would have been more confident going through the Omega relay with A/K to lead a fire team so I could let Garrus just murder things. I was being a little hyperbolic, I like all the characters from MET and most of the main cast of MEA, but the poll asked for polarization so I did it

Liara. In ME1 kaiden is the best Biotic companion for my Vanguard. She's thankfully gone from ME2. And in ME3, Kaiden is still a measurably better Biotic companion for my Vanguard. That said, I have very little use for Jacob or Thane either in ME2. Zaeed and Grunt are just perfection! EDIT TO ADD. I adore James in ME3. He goes on almost every mission along with Kaiden. T'soni can see herself off of my damned ship!

To be honest, I've never had my problems with Liara, but I see where people are coming from. Jacob is just a regular guy that I prefer not to dislike because he isn't essential in any way and interactions with him are entirely optional. Also, as someone who doesn't play biotic classes, it's fun taking Jacob early on to do those biotic combos with him and Miranda.
So, EDI and Tali are my picking. I dislike the whole creepy sexbot maniac Joker becomes because of it. "I'm right here, Jeff" "Yes, you are EDI." Sure, the themes are cool on itself, the whole organic and synthetic debate which eventually leads to the synthesis tought, but it's just... weird to have someone be attracted (and sexually I mean) to a robot.
As for Tali? Well, she is not that interesting. ME1 she's a walking Codex and is literally essential to have for the plot to move forward. Then, in ME2, her conversations are always like "well, remember I told you that in the first game? Let me tell you that again." Her combat skills suck outside her loyalty mission, since we are mostly fighting mercs, not Geth. Plus, Legion has an identical kit and also carries a Sniper Rifle, so I'll take him instead if I need to hack some mechs. As for ME3, she isn't really there for the majority of the game and the Rannoch arc sadly isn't something that I get invested on after playing countless times.
Ok, that last one may be my fault because of my countless playthroughs, but yeah.

Kasumi and Jacob. One is superfluous except to acquire a very neat gun and the other is selfish, despicable and self-righteous. They're also the ones I most consistently allow to die on the Suicide Mission because they have no real relevance in the third game.
I don't mind Liara. Sometimes I'm in the mood for her geeky charm and sometimes I'm not. But something I really like about her is that she has enough connections and relevance to the world and plot outside combat scenarios that I can leave her on the Normandy and still feel like she's pulling her weight in the overall conflict and isn't just wasting her time onboard, as a Prothean expert and potential leverage over Benezia or as the Shadow Broker making deals and pulling strings that further the cause.
Like Mordin, and potentially Miranda and Tali, she's enough of a noncombatant with work to do that there's no reason to disturb it by whisking her away into a gunfight if you don't want to, while squad members like Grunt and Jack and Thane and James Vega have no reason to be part of the team at all if you're just leaving them sitting around.

They're also the ones I most consistently allow to die on the Suicide Mission because they have no real relevance in the third game. Kasumi is useful in the third game in allowing that Spectre to survive and gain war assets, as well as those from Kasumi herself. Don't think Jacob brings anything to the table that can't be substituted by Random Replacement Dude. Funny how two squaddies who only existed because of DLC bring in more than him.
