Quite surprised that Liara is 2nd. To me she always seemed to be everybody's bae, she can't do no wrong.
Not surprised Ashley is 3rd. Most people can't be bothered to look past the 'I sometimes can't tell the aliens from the animals'remark. To me, Ashley is one of the best characters in the series and if you can't see that you seriously need to get some perspective. Free your mind, don't be so shallow. Ashley challenges both Shepard and the player, something most companions won't. She develops and grows, she invites, she triggers. She is real and pure.

Ash is great in ME1, but she regresses as a character in ME3. Her religious and xenophobic side are ignored. She repeats a similar arc about her family, and she sits in the lounge not doing or saying much. Even her romance scenes are weak. Like her Citadel scene barely changes even if romanced. It might make her unique, but she can behave bratty into ME3 when she is the one that walks away from you. Plus her sexed up design is lame and out of character. She feels like a discount Miranda. I don't think she challenges anyone but at least she has her own opinions, which many of the aliens don't seem to. Though you are likely right most just hate her for being racist when that isn't true. I was thoroughly disappointed in her lack of character in ME3.

Nyreen. Can't stand her hoiler than thou attitude. Don't care much for Aria either. Wish I could screw over both of them and let Bray run omega. Outta the main squadmates I'd go with Samara and EDI. They barely get used. I liked EDI better when she was just a voice.

Also didn't care much for Jack in 2, or Jacob. Jacob is barely ahead of Morinth, Thane, and Zaeed.
Jack got better in 3 (even though her changes weren't necessarily realistic).

As well, while I consider Morinth and Thane to be, in a sense, the worst squadmates due to their unsettling/pathological nature (more so Thane, Morinth feels a lot more artificial,) Morinth ranks somewhat higher in my list based on overall presentation. Thane, Zaeed, and Jacob are my least favorite companions in general. Thane I find to be the most unsettling companion, and I dislike his philosophy and personality. The only other Bioware companions or friendly npcs I can think of who make me feel a similar way are Iron Bull and Kelly Chambers (I know,) but even with them it's different. Zaeed and Jacob are functionally the most useless companions in the series. On top of having little role in the story, they add the least perspective to the universe. Even other seemingly pointless companions like Thane, Morinth, Jack, Grunt, etc. added lore to their respective species or gave perspective on Cerberus and other organizations. Yes, Jacob was connected to Cerberus, and Zaeed the Blue Suns, but their contributions to the lore felt very minimal and/or eclipsed by other characters. Zaeed's loyalty mission stunts made me dislike him, and he felt like some Z-tier badaaaaass headcanon fantasy for a lot of the fanbase. I honestly make fun of him just as much or even more than Jacob. Jacob was so blase that it actually made me laugh at times; there's that, at least. So although I'd rank Morinth and Thane as being the worst if they were real people, my ranking of all them for general presentation goes: Morinth > Jacob > Zaeed/Thane
I saw someone comment that 300 years was way too long for Morinth's goth phase.
That's exactly how I feel about her character: so edgy it feels fake

That's exactly how I feel about her character: so edgy it feels fake I agree regarding Zaeed. Useless character and he's extremely unlikable to boot. Jacob's bland-ness or being an oridnary guy in ME2 was the point. But I wish they improved him in ME3. Or at least not make him the only cheater. Kind of rare to see someone dislike Thane so much. But I also have lost interest in him as a character. He's a good squadmate though.

But I also have lost interest in him as a character. He's a good squadmate though. Jacob was written to be down-to-earth, yes, but you can make characters seem grounded without making them hilariously blase. He also added almost nothing to the story, like I said. Bioware could've written him as a FOIL to Miranda, since they leaned in opposite directions on Cerberus, but the two had very little real conflict beyond the end of the opening sequence.
My distaste for Thane is explained partly by presentation-based bias. The first time I played through ME2, and the second-to-last time I played through (which was quite a while after the playthrough prior to that,) I had a strong negative reaction to his design and mannerisms. Playing through again, I no longer have that reaction since I'm used to him again, but the pattern seems to be that when I haven't dealt with him for a long stretch of time, that negative reaction re-occurs.
The other part of it is that I'm generally not a fan of companions who are assassins, mercs, etc. There are exceptions, though.

Jacob was so blase that it actually made me laugh at times; there's that, at least. You know why I don't like him? His motives are incredibly inconsistent. It's one thing for two engineers to go to an organization that they probably don't know anything about other than that they want to fight the Collectors. Jacob, though, knew exactly what they were and still joined. "Red Tape" is too much to handle but terrorism is totally okay. Or "I'm watching them". As if TIM cares. Then, after running away from Red Tape he acts like a suck-up, pretends he's a soldier and keeps saluting Shepard. Makes me cringe every time. Jacob can't even resolve his own LM without Shepard's decision about how it should end.

It's like even his writer couldn't figure out what he wanted to do with Jacob. Before visiting Freedom's he makes a big deal about how he's going to earn Shepard's trust, then as soon as you get on the Normandy he talks to you as little as he can get away with. Those things don't match.
