(A bit of copy/paste from what I said on /r/MassEffect, so here goes...) So on Neogaf, Shinobi has been saying for a while that we're suppose to get at least 15 minutes worth of gameplay footage in mid/late February. Well today he posted, gameplay previews are coming in 3 weeks: neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=229580379&postcount=16272Now assuming Bioware isn't planning to release gameplay footage before then, it sounds like we're not getting long undoctored gameplay footage until late February, about a month away from release. Normally this wouldn't bug me too much, but there's been a lack of gameplay footage in general. Yes we have seen some, but the best we've seen was from the Game Awards, and the gameplay from the CES footage was just a bad demonstration. The amount of dislikes on that CES footage is a bit concerning. It's really no secret that ME:A is already very divisive amongst the gaming community. There's already so many people voicing out their disappointment over what they've seen so far, and many more voicing concern over the lack of gameplay. Now that we're getting closer and closer to release, I don't get why the marketing for this game is still so quite. They're had an uphill battle to climb ever since the ME3 controversy. They should've been going balls out with the marketing for ME:A from the very beginning. It's like they want this game to have mediocre sales. I'm excited for the game, and I want it to be good, but I gotta call it like I see it. The marketing for ME:A has been really bad. You can't go anwhere, whether it'd be Youtube, Reddit, Neogaf, Gamespot, Gamefaqs, or any other outlet, without seeing a lot of people against this game. Comment sections are almost a 50/50 split between those excited and those disappointed/skeptical, and it's like Bioware doesn't even care. If they're really going to wait til late February to finally show us long undoctored gameplay footage, they NEED to pull out all the stops this time and show some impressive shit. This game is being released not long after Zelda and Horizon, two other open world games that have so far gotten MUCH better reception and have garned a lot more excitement, and you know gamers are gonna compare them to ME:A. It's friggin hard to defend this game at this point.

I don't know where the game's divisiveness is coming from, all the media outlets I have been looking at outside of this forum, are looking forward to it. Putting among the very tops of their most anticipated games lists.

Putting among the very tops of their most anticipated games lists. They're media outlets. Helping to build hype for upcoming games is part of their job. Not only does it benefit the publishers (more hype = more sales), it also benefits them because it means a higher amount of average clicks any time they write an article about said game.

I agree that the marketing so far has been a combination of not overly interesting as well as lacking in content. The trailers so far haven't hyped me nearly as much as some of the ME trilogy ones. We've had maybe 3 minutes of (cut up) gameplay and we're less than 2 months from launch. Not great Not to mention lack of info on character customization, roleplay information including the differences between Scott and Sara, crafting and other systems, etc. The contrast between this and DA:I marketing is astounding. We even got nice summaries of each companion that got me excited to meet them. Here, we're just guessing, for the most part. About a lot. So far I think the best marketing by far has been the Initiative briefings. And believe it or not, I don't want this game to fail, and I try not to be negative. I understand why Bioware wants to play it safe when it comes to marketing (not revealing too much), but I think this close to release we should have substantially more info.

We have been getting profiles on each one of the characters, both in your squad and out of your squad. And they were raked over the coals for their DA I marketing campaign, so kind of a shoker that maybe they aren't doing the same thing this time?

The Marketing for Andromeda has been very odd. Their strategy is intriguing, while we have been getting the Andromeda Initiative briefings the last few months, we haven't gotten a whole lot. It seems they are going to try to push as much marketing into the two months before launch. I am not a marketing expert, but it does seem weird.
Also, I believe IGN has a lengthy Gameplay video that they should be releasing soon. Don't know how valid it is, I've just heard that floating about.

Gameplay is honestly the thing I'm LEAST worried about. The Mass Effect games have always gotten better in each new game in terms of gameplay. ME3's gameplay was fun. The Game Awards was enough for me honestly.
As long as the story is there (we already know it's going to LOOK good) I have nothing to worry about.

The Cinematic Trailers have been good. The second one has gotten me too hyped. I've watched it like 50+ times.

Oh no! A mere 30 days to see footage of a game and decide if you want to buy it?? I don't know how to make that important of a decision in so little time!!
Seriously, I'm not sure why we need to see gameplay months and months in advance. Would it be nice to satiate our curiosity? Yes. Is it necessary? No! Don't like what you've seen so far? Don't preorder. Don't like what they show when they show 15 uninterrupted minutes of gameplay? Don't preorder. Wait for the game to come out, watch "let's plays" and wait for IGN reviews, then decide. Want to wait for the GOTY edition with all the DLC? Do that!
I'll never get why people think the press material has to be rolled out for like a whole year of non-stop info for video games. Hell, people are hyped for Death Stranding and we have no idea if it's third-person shooter, first person RPG, or themed pinball game yet.
Gameplay will come when it does. As long as it's before launch and you can still cancel your pre-order, it's not an issue.
I'm also uncertain as to where the "divisiveness" is. Here, sure, and on neogaph forums. But it's really just a vocal minority. It's like 15% of the community following all the news. It's not representative of gamers as a whole.

I'm not sure I know the specifics, not being into marketing myself, but I can almost imagine someone at EA figuring 'well no matter how much we market the game, we'll pretty much sell X number of games regardless, so instead of marketing the game actively for years, why not wait till the end so it will be fresh in people's memories'. That and I also suspect the mere nature of marketing games are changing. People want to, hence this thread, see gameplay, but the best way to do it is to...and many developers have been doing this (even EA/ BioWare with DA I)...is to give it to youtubers and let them play it. Which could lead to another maxime of modern day game marketing. It does not matter when they sell a game, as long as they sell it. Sure, pre orders are still obviously a thing but game publishers could realize that a lot of gamers, most of their sales, will come from after the game is released, months, and years after. So now, instead of just front loading a lot of marketing spending obscene amounts of marketing on it, instead, just give it to youtubers and let them makret your game for you.

I'm thinking this is exactly true. Like a FilmTheory episode I watched recently about the return on investment for Super Bowl commercials being very low, it could be that the ROI for traditional marketing campaign for video games isn't profitable.

I think EA said they are estimating at least 3 million sales in the first week, and somewhere between 6-9 million total. That is pretty insane man. ME3 barely sold 3 million in 7 months(It was some long period of time, don't quote me on the 7 months)

Yes, I'm seeing pessimism in those threads. The 'box of trolls'*: be they 'it sucks', 'SJW-fest', 'BioWare are racists' are out in force. Though look at YouTube 'likes' for example, the reaction is >90% favorable. Even in our own 'Skepticism thread' a poll reaction to a 'will it suck' question was 85%: 'no it won't'.For that reason, I don't see the number of pessimistic posts as representative by their proportion, of the wider audience. That said, do BioWare need to get on with the marketing now? Yes, I think so. EDIT: *That's not to say all commentary that criticizes the game, or BioWare's political stance is trolling. I was picking out those that take an extreme view seemingly for effect.

Late marketing is simply a strategy (an effective one at that) and realistically the only people that are upset about not seeing anything till the very last minute are the fans of the series, whom the vast majority will buy the game anyway because they're fans of the series. You gotta remember that message boards and comments sections will never be an accurate representation of a user base because of the vocal minority. A huge media push in the last month or two will result in most media outlets being saturated with Andromeda news, which will continually put the game at the forefront of people's minds and that gives people the impression that there's a lot to say about the game so it's going to be huge. Whereas a spread out campaign would have resulted in Andromeda getting lost in a sea of other games and would result in the game competing for attention far more.

Activision spends half a billion marketing Call of Duty pretty much every year and the sales for each title have been sinking year over year; hell yeah the ROI for traditional marketing doesn't pay off. Capcom has been doing 5-8 months for marketing since RE6, Fallout 4 had a similar time frame, we never see Call of Duty or Assassins Creed until four months before their releases, and so on. Marketing runs have been getting shorter and shorter for years, especially now that personalities have fare more sway and influence on whether or not people are receptive toward certain titles than 15 second commercials or highly choreographed gameplay demos that show off the game but never show off the game. Gaming marketing seems to be more like movie marketing these days, where 10 weeks of a consistent, solid push is pretty much the max of what you get until release. Helps to keep the product top of mind instead of having people go "this thing is taking forever, so I'm going to pass on it" or for people to forget it's coming out to begin with since it only got 1 screenshot every 4 months.

I'm no marketing expert but I'm happy that they have waited until the last 4 months pre-release before revealing anything of substance, as opposed to stringing it out over 12 months. I'd rather wait when I'm less hyped than get hyped and then wait.
Also, they could have shown 100s of hours of the most incredible, ground-breaking gameplay over the last 6 months and there still would have been truckloads of bile being spewed on reddit, neogaf and the comments sections on youtube, etc. That's kinda par for the course for Bioware since DA2 was released. (Note that I'm not trying to tar every person who uses those sites with the same brush.)

Call me selfish, but I truly don't care if this game is marketed well or not. I only care that the game is released. And I know undeniably that it will be.
If I am being honest, I don't even care if it is successful . As long as I get to play it.
I would like it to be successful enough to warrant Bioware/EA to make a follow-up, but, honestly, I can't be bothered to think that far into the future.
Heck, I honestly can't remember exactly (to the day) when this game will be released. All I know is that some day within the next month or two, I will get to play a Mass Effect game I haven't played yet. That is all I truly care about.
Does that make me a bad or lesser fan of this game series?
Probably.
But, frankly and respectfully, I don't care if anyone loves this series more than I do. I love Mass Effect. Period. It is the only reason I am here. That and the awesome people I get to give "thumbs up" to.

(Note that I'm not trying to tar every person who uses those sites with the same brush.) Exactly! There was nothing worse than being being strung along for Metal Gear Solid 4 for four years. You'd get one longass 30 minute trailer with 3-5 minutes of gameplay once every 7 months, and when screenshots drop, they were always of the same two areas. That was rough. MGS3 was similar, but even that was only a two year wait from actual reveal to release. Going extended periods of time with trickling information is exciting, but it's also annoying. Everyone who's saying "where's Andromeda info!" when the game was first really shown in November and the release is in under two months. imagine how you'd feel if they formally announced the game back in 2014 instead of just teasing its existence and the stuff we got now was instead spread out through 2015 to E3 2016, followed by nothing but a dry spell? You'd be even more antsy and agitated. Info spread out over four months is a hell of a lot better than 1 year+.
