Most of the main contenders like "the priiiiize" and Benezia have already been mentioned. I'd give an honorable shout out to "It's not just any reaper. It's a ... HUMAN REAPER!!!" Dun dun duuuuun!
BTW, about Benezia: I always wondered if something went wrong with the coding there actually. The scene seems like it has some pauses in it that shouldn't be there. While Marina Sirtis' voice acting is not great in itself (not to mention the script), it's those pauses and the weird timing that makes this scene extra awkward for me. Actually, you can notice this in quite a few scenes in ME1 and even ME2, where it seems they made the pauses in the scripts (coding scripts, not direction scripts) too long between dialogue lines. By the time of ME3, they seem to have mostly gotten the hang of it though.

"You're just a machine! And machines can be broken!" I facepalm every time I hear Shepard say this to Sovereign. No wonder he thinks we're too dumb to understand the Reapers motivations. You know I still don't have a good answer as to why people think this line is so ridiculous. Ok so Sovereign turns out to be some kind of artificial intelligence. Maybe it's super advanced, maybe not, but what's wrong with trash talking it? How many people on here ignore what the geth are/have achieved and just call them toasters? I also get what they were going for with "this isn't about strategy or tactics". It's not saying those are useless/to be thrown out (though, from a certain point of view, they go on and say that ad nauseum anyway via "the Reapers can't be beaten conventionally"). It's supposed to evoke a more invested reaction. It's like, you can't just sitback and armchair quarterback this war. It's not a chess match, all our lives are on the line. It's supposed to be playing to the idea of the aloof detached general just moving pieces on the board and shooting that notion down. At least that's how I interpreted it. Same with "we fight or we die". After years of everyone dragging their feet and going "ah yes, Reapers", I'd be more than a little pissed at further shirking of duty too. "Citadel? The fight's here!" on the other hand has zero excuse. We're on the same page mostly but not the Strategy vs Tactics thing. I get what they were going for, it shared what I thought but it's bipolar dialogue. He goes one second from saying we can't just think of Reapers as normal enemies to the next saying that we should fight them and work together and then later the line about staying to fight rather than seeking alternative solutions. A second earlier Anderson was talking about how Shepard "faced down a reaper and then blew the damn thing up". You can just feel how the dialogue is going nowhere in the scene with the Defense Committee or just the earth Vancouver intro in general.

You can just feel how the dialogue is going nowhere in the scene with the Defense Committee or just the earth Vancouver intro in general. Well, like I said "The fight's here" has no excuse. But otherwise, I think the rest is legitimate. You can't think of the Reapers as a normal enemy: a normal enemy can be influenced by fear, propaganda, they can pause, they have supply lines and weaknesses. None of that applies to the Reapers. There's an argument that even veterans of dozens of conflicts can't fully grasp the concept of total war being levied against them until they've actually been in the thick of it. And in RL, no one's been in the thick of it, because humans can't wage total war. And again, it can't be stressed enough how complacent and completely dumb everyone's been about this thus far. But yeah, I can agree the intro as a whole was awkward, mostly because everyone was holding the idiot ball. Shepard in lockup instead of doing something, Anderson who believed him talking to a committee instead of doing something, the committe for, well, existing. And of course the timing of the whole thing. I mean I could see the brass and the politicians wringing their hands and wasting time, but still doing so right as they get stomped by the Reapers?

He's still inarticulate about it. "This isn't about strategy or tactics, it's about survival". Tactics or strategy involves strategy for survival, strategy for not engaging an enemy when it's immune to certain things.
It's messy dialogue and it made me cringe.

Clearly he couldn't sink entirely to their level because the response was still "cow looking at an oncoming train".

Actually, that entire dialogue (and a lot of others in ME) bother me because politicians and committees are constantly depicted as just being dumb and incompetent. No matter if it's the council, this committee, Udina when he was still ambassador or whoever. Yes there are dumb politicians and politics in general involves a lot of slogging through useless crap but actually, most people in these high positions are highly intelligent and competent on their own. It's usually more the very complex problems that they face that make them seem slow (yes, I am breaking a lance for politicians here, i need a shower now ). The most frustrating thing regarding ME for me is that I thought politics with the council was depicted very well in Mass Effect Revelation. The battle of wits between Ambassador Goyle and the council are just about my favorite parts of the book. Both sides act very rationally and calculating but still producing the very imperfect outcomes that we are used to see from politics in the real world as well (pretty crappy but probably still about the best that could be done from each participants perspective). In the games, this is completely lost and thus we get scenes like the committee scene with a bunch of admirals that couldn't even handle "strategy or tactics".

If people think that the geth are going to be offended by being called "toasters," I would think that they are being just as ridiculous as Shepard when he seems to think a machine like Sovereign is going to "feel" intimidated by such trash talk. In fact, by the time the Citadel DLC rolls around, Shepard apparently agrees that it was a ridiculous thing to do... since he can tell the Asari playing Kepesh-Yakshi against Sam that trash talk is something else that doesn't work on Reapers.

You do chat up a boy who dies a second later just after, remember? I also don't think it was intentional that they wrote the committee to be so useless. That entire scene just had me groaning out of my skin. I distinctly remember being excited over the demo in feburary when I was on vacation at the time on my shitty laptop and I had been so hyped and immediately I could just tell I hated this scene. Whatever defense council invites in an expert to ask them "What do we do?" The fuck kind of pentagon-like committee is that? You're telling me you have zero strategic data about how to defeat some starships. They're supposed to be leaders that put military plans in motion. They should have no time to sit around going "Ooh, we're so scared, please help us!" If what they were trying to convey was Shepard trying to tell people that conventional strategy would be futile perhaps the scene should've instead been that of a bunch of gruff military leaders going "We need you to tell us what you know about this enemy. We've planned a frontal assault, we're sending all alliance dreadnoughts in, all our N7 ranking soldier in the field etc." and then Shepard would go "nonono, you guys are insane. This will not work" and then they all get sneak-attacked by that sovereign Reaper.

Well, maybe he trash talks it more for the benefit of himself and his squad then for the reapers. Sometimes, it ups moral of oneself and one's team to just verbally reinforce the belief that you have a chance. Granted, that's very generous thinking but that's what I go with.

I honestly am not going to try to justify it... I think it legitimately qualifies to be put it on this list of "dorkiest" dialogue in the series. Here's another - Kaidan from ME1... "Big place." (... and on this one, Ashley seems to agree because she follows it up with "That your professional opinion, sir?") However, she seems rather oblivious to her own "How fast do you think those cars are going?" or "Do you think it's expensive to live here?" or "What are those? Cherry trees?" (I swear that they spent the first part of ME1 trying to make her out to be a very cliche "dumb chick" with all the truly "blond" lines they gave her.)

"I can't tell the aliens from the animals." Hey Ashley, why don't you try YELLING THAT? They can all understand you, ya bitch. That's one of the best lines. Also was only supposed to trigger when looking at a keeper. *** Not just the writing, but the delivery made me feel like a low budget porn was going to break out half the time Shepard talks to Liara in ME1 (maleshep anyway). " You're remarkably strong willed commander..."
"Sounds dangerous... and lonely."
And then in the best Kirk tradition... "You're right, there is ... something between us."

And though this explanation would make it no less stupid, I do kind of wish they chalked up the Council et al hugging the idiocy ball so tightly up to indoctrination. Reveal that being on the Citadel figuratively makes you a dumb sheep/lemming when it comes to the Reapers. Doesn't explain the planetary governments not taking more action, but I would've almost paid for a scene where the Council is evacuated from the Citadel and it's like they suddenly wake up from a stupor. You know when you swear at your iphone that it's not going to respond in any way. Shepard, on the other hand, was clearly involved in a conversation at that moment with Sovereign. He anthropomorphizes it by default. In the Citadel DLC, he basically admits it was a pretty lame attempt to "trash talk" a Reaper since he's found out that trash talking them just doesn't work. It's still a dorky line, IMO and not one in your opinion. It's not something we have to agree on... so, let's just leave it there this time around, eh.

In the Citadel DLC, he basically admits it was a pretty lame attempt to "trash talk" a Reaper. It's still a dorky line, IMO and not one in yours. So, let's just leave it there this time around, eh. You can get into a "conversation" with SIRI. Are you anthropomorphising it? The example doesn't map one to one because we don't even have VIs in RL, or even many programs able to simulate realistic conversation. But if we did, it'd take a hell of a lot more to start thinking of it as human. Turing test yo. And no, Shepard does not "admit it was lame" in Citadel. That conversation is about trash talking the space chess asari, not reflecting on his past choices. Say, doesn't he threaten the Rachni queen once? Or various krogan. Does that mean he's just put himself down thrice? But even if it was about the Sovereign convo, I'd say Shepard knows a little more about the Reapers by the time of that DLC compared to ME1. Dismissing something as a stupid machine when you've just started interacting with it may not be a mistake, even if later data proves it to be an error. You acted under the best intel at the time.

Personally I don't find a fault with the "Machines can be broken" line either, but I totally get the point UpUpRedux is making. It sucks because you don't have the choice not to make him say it because not everyone will be thinking to pick such a typically ignorant "badass hero" line. I personally found it to belong quite well but that's because I was also thinking the same, that Sovereign is a giant computer-abomination that should be turned off, but that's just one way to look at it. Oh yeah this one was a good cringe. Shepard: "Cerberus has a reputation for being against aliens." Kelly: "Cerberus may have a history of being for humanity but that doesn't mean they don't like aliens. My sister had a dog-shelter but she liked cats too"

And yet you quote me. Fine, whatever. Let me know when you want to have an actual argument again.

He's still inarticulate about it. "This isn't about strategy or tactics, it's about survival". Tactics or strategy involves strategy for survival, strategy for not engaging an enemy when it's immune to certain things. It's messy dialogue and it made me cringe. Meh, I read it as dumb dialogue for dumb people (i.e. the committee). He went sensationalist so their little complacent minds could undestand. Clearly he couldn't sink entirely to their level because the response was still "cow looking at an oncoming train". That's a valid point. Beyond that, I always think our critiques amount to "if I had years to sit back and dissect what was said, here's how I'd do it" rather than "shit's happening now and maybe I'm not doing the best job with my wording". Similarly, when Shepard is practically on death's door when talking to the Catalyst, people expect rational, well thought out dialogue from our hero. Well, no, it's very unlikely to happen.

Here's another - Kaidan from ME1... "Big place." (... and on this one, Ashley seems to agree because she follows it up with "That your professional opinion, sir?") I'm positive Kaidan revisits that comment in ME3, maybe if he goes to Cronos Station to the room holding the human Reaper. A lot of times I felt like ME3 made fun of what they must have realized were silly things in the previous games.
