Someone's already said this, but the most hammy line may have just been bad delivery by Mark Meer. Shepard has never yelled with such caring before, and about the shuttle pilot? No offense to him. It makes me cringe every time. "Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" That one wasn't Mark Meer's fault. There were multiple reactions to Steve's death recorded, but for whatever reason Bioware only used one of them. The Steve shout was written originally as a reaction if Cortez was the LI. If Cortez wasn't the LI, Shepard's reaction was going to be toned back a bit. Also that line by itself was fine if Steve died, even if he wasn't the LI. What made the scene meme-worthy was when Cortez survives, and Shepard follows up that shout with an almost nonchalant "You sure?" after Steve says he is fine. It's the weird shift in tone that makes it stand out. That was also on Bioware and not the actor. Oh, I didn't know the details of it. Makes more sense if Steve was the LI. Wow a big screw-up. And yes, forgot about the line after it with the odd tonal shift.

The branching paths are expensive to make resource wise. They did here, what they do mutliple times in ME3 which is to assume the least damaging route being canonized and cutting out the branching ways it was meant to be used.
I'm sure they also discussed how to handle the Anderson vs Udina councilor state before just defaulting to Udina being councilor for the plot and to prioritize other plot aspects that were more feasible to get done.

I thought it was implied (when you're walking sideways on the beam and Shepard saying "I owe you one") that Anderson gave up the Citadel seat to support Shepard during the trial. Pretty sure, Councillors are supposed to wash their hands of any issues with their Spectres by making a new Spectre to hunt the rogue one. That's the main reason why they allow Shepard to chase after Saren while still being neutral about Saren. It would be unseemly for a Councillor to openly favor and protect a disgraced Spectre without it being blatant favoritism.

And "dorkiest" here means socially inept right? ....does the entirety of Garrus' ME2 romance exchanges count...?

Actually, I think Shepard's reaction to Steve's shuttle crash was only out of proportion based on reactions to other deaths. More of them should have had Shepard showing some strong feelings.

Agree. Benezia's death scene was reeeaaaallly bad - made worse by bringing the "little wing" bit up again in ME3 when Liara is talking with her father. You're insane. That reference in ME3 is the only thing that redeems that cringey Noveria scene!

Nothing redeems that cringe worthy Noveria scene. Well when I say redeem I mean that they created something good from that crap scene. It certainly doesn't make it even worse, which seemed to be the suggestion in the originally quoted post.

That benezia scene was funny. I laughed more at her stupid line about "Have you ever seen an asari commando unit before? Few humans have." Her death was....whatever.

"It's 10k credits for a single krogan testicle. So that's 40k creds for a whole set"
The thing that gets me is that "Krogan testicles?" pops up on the dialogue wheel before Garrus even says it. And speaking of Cortez, "Steeeeve!" is bad but nothing tops the squad's reaction, especially Ashley's:

I heard a pretty good argument recently that the end scene with TIM was just as poorly written as everything else in the ending but people never paid attention to it because it was well designed and I agree with that. Of all the things that didn't go down well in the ending at least having 3-4 filled dialogue wheels and interrupts created an adequate sense of player-importance and a climax for the dialogue system. That said I agree. I always thought TIM was a raving madman and not in a good way, in ME3, in fact this is just one of many reasons why I've complained in the past and recently that ME3 had bad dialogue in general, particularly TIM who used to have smart enough points whenever what he did seemed questionable... until ME3 when you can barely make sense of what he's trying to do. Every dialogue with him can be boiled down to Shepard yelling "YES!" and TIM yelling "NO!" at each other. They disagree about what they should do and that's it. It's one-sided. Nobody has any clue how to destroy or control Reapers yet they keep arguing about whether one way or the other is the right way to go, so it just doesn't work, and even the finale has that problem too. They also made TIM repeat himself like 3 times over in the final conversation with him. "Control of the Reapers and of you if necessary." "Controlling me is a lot different than controlling a Reaper" "Look at the power they wield, look at what they can do!" "...He's wrong don't listen to him" "And what if he's wrong? What if controlling the Reapers IS the answer?" "Maybe you're just being controlled." "No, NO! Listen you two, The Crucible will allow me to control them!" "No we have to destroy them!" "Then I'll have to force you to give me what I want!" I know that's heavily paraphrased but god. We had the exact same conversation as we had on Mars. They revealed it too soon. They know right away that he might be indoctrinated, then on Thessia they just reaffirm the same thing, on Cerberus HQ he literally talks about nothing and in the ending he just repeats the same arguments as he did on Mars and Thessia and Shepard does too until one of them pulls the trigger. It's fucking stupid lol. While I agree with you on everything you said here, I'm just wondering if you did a playthrough where you shot TIM instead of having him commit suicide? That last line he does right before he dies is IMO one of the single best lines in ME3, and possibly Mass Effect overall. "There... Earth. I wish you could see it like I do, Shepard. It's so... Perfect." The first time I saw this I shed a tear. Sheen's delivery is absolutely perfect, and you really feel for this guy. The only thing he ever really wanted was to protect and elevate that which he loved more than anything, humanity. And while it's always been debateable wether or not TIM actually cared for mankind as much as he claimed to, this scene is proof enough for me. Of course, It's sad that such a great moment, and character, had to be ruined by the bad writing during the last game, like you already said.

He's still inarticulate about it. "This isn't about strategy or tactics, it's about survival". Tactics or strategy involves strategy for survival, strategy for not engaging an enemy when it's immune to certain things. It's messy dialogue and it made me cringe. Meh, I read it as dumb dialogue for dumb people (i.e. the committee). He went sensationalist so their little complacent minds could undestand. Clearly he couldn't sink entirely to their level because the response was still "cow looking at an oncoming train". The committee is dumb in the first place because the person who wrote the scene was dumb enough to make such a dumb scene. Everything about it was just dumb for all the wrong reasons. It's some attempt to ape movies like Independence Day but those are not dumb as a fashion statement, they're dumb because Roland Emmerich who wrote them isn't too bright about writing believable characters or dialogue and similarly ME3 is dumb because Casey or Mac thought to write a "dumb" scene because they liked Independence Day or something. It's all pretty facepalm worthy.

Playing the first game again and there's always a line that's stuck out to me...not because of the line itself, but the delivery is so off. Not sure how it is with MShep, but it's early on when you meet Ashley on Eden Prime and ask her about the get attack. Once the conversation is over–a calm, rational conversation–FShep *yells* "MOVE OUT!" way too loudly out of nowhere. Ashley just gives a nod and slowly walks away, no urgency whatsoever. It's just a directing/animating misfire, but in context Shepard comes off like a maniac.

There were multiple voice recordings for that scene, depending on Shepard's relationship with him, but only the overly dramatic version made it - even if your MShep never spoke to him.

Yeah it wasn't only MShep. I'm pretty sure the squadmates had really... uncomfortable reactions to Steve's death in that scene. It's just like a weird yell/grunt. I guess everyone is really broken up about not getting a ride back to the Normandy.

And like you said I don't know if it was just directional problem or a sound problem or what. I'm thinking the former, though, because later if you romance Kaidan after the romance scene when Joker tells you they're at the mass relay you get the "JOKER IS WAITING FOR YOU ON THE BRIDGE!!!!" line from Kaidan, said in almost a yell, followed by him calmly saying "I swear though if anything happens to you... take care Shepard." two seconds afterward. It just sounds off. Speaking of pointless yelling... "WE CAN USE THIS!" "I'LL TAKE IT!" No, my favorite is when you're already in combat (and have been for several minutes or whatever) and Shepard or one of his/her companions is like "THEY'VE SPOTTED US!/THEY SEE US!/WE'VE BEEN SPOTTED!. It's like, 'Well, no shit they've only been shooting at us for five minutes and we've been shooting back!

The one that always sticks out to me is when Shepard is shouting at Saren at the endgame, when he's in front of the Citadel control panel, and Shepard is clearly shouting, but her/his lips barely move. And don't even get me started on the descent to Ilos and the "There's nowhere else to land!" argument between Kaidan and Pressly. Several cringy moments in ME1. Ugh.
