I think Sara always looked fine. Either way I will be playing the default Sara along with a few custom Saras.

Why is it offensive for people to be honest about what they find ugly? I think Sara's face model is a very attractive woman but it's been horribly botched in the game itself, just like Miranda. yeah I agree the model they used was attractive it just didn't translate that well into the game I don't think. Maybe it';s theengine or maybe the technique they used I don't know but tbh I don't really care either as I was always going to customize them

Could someone post a non-photoshopped, non makeupped and unstyled picture of Jayde Rossi for comparison and then we can start talking about 'wtf bioware u made supermodel ugly sjw I've downgraded to the £200 special edition now usux' sort of thing.

Okay, I'll bite. They had a beautiful face model with Jayde Rossi and they kinda botched it. They messed up Miranda in ME2 (who was designed to be "perfect") and IMO they messed up default femShep in ME3. They like to give their female characters manjaws and weird facial proportions. Anyone who enjoys playing around with CCs and mods can probably tell you some easy steps to make Sara's face more attractive and closer to her face model. I simply expect more from an AAA developer, not something that looks like it was done by an intern. And before anyone accuses me of only criticizing female chars, default Scott Ryder looks like a bobblehead manlet with short arms and facial pubes.

Not trying to sound dramatic, but I really feel like it's getting outta hand. If Sara isn't a decent looking woman, then people need to start telling me just what the hell is, because I would date the shit outta this girl. The reason why I'm getting a tad bit offended by all this though, is because I'm looking at people pick apart little things like "Her nose is too big!" and "Her mouth has weird proportions, and her eyes look derpy." I mean jesus christ if people ever wonder why women obsess over their looks in our society, then here ya go. I'm not here to argue whether or not she looks amazing, but she absolutely doesn't look bad in the true sense of the word, so I don't know why people always gotta exaggerate. Furthermore it's funny that these same people complaining conveniently ignore the fact you can customize the look of your character. Something that's existed in Mass Effect since....um...the first game. Almost 10 years ago. Far as I'm concerned the Sara = Ugly thing is just a shitty meme at this point that people are just hoping on. Being offended by and for someone that is fictional is silly. After all, this is a game, not religion. As for people picking and nitpicking on her appearance, just ignore them.

I'll put it simple. She looks good, I like her too but it's her "smirk" on her face that is ruining it. It seems like her oral commissures are completely fixed and making the whole mouth part look weird whenever she talks or smiles. It needs to be corrected imo. That is all. On the other hand I find side female characters quite good looking as well.

I don't get this. Why would anybody complain about a character who doesn't exist? Why would you make a topic complaining about people complaining about a character that doesn't exist? Default is just that, default. I will never, ever see default "Sara" because she will never, ever exist. Q: Why would anybody complain about a character who doesn't exist? A: Because they can. Because they don't like how she looks. Because they want to troll. Because they want to find fault with the game. Pick one of these reasons. Q: Why would you make a topic complaining about people complaining about a character that doesn't exist? A: White Knighting.

Plot twist:- Sarah Ryder is a prototype Mass Effect's version of a female Terminator - There are bound to be flaws on a prototype. Or she was genetically designed by her parents (like how Miranda and Oriana Lawson are genetically designed) and her parents were high when they were designing the mouth. How else do you explain her being able to just switch profiles and switch between abilities on the fly ? She has got to be a cyborg or a genetically engineered woman.

To me, BioWare games always had a fair dose of cartoonish sensibilities in the way the whole thing was designed. Frankly, I love them more for it. I think people are just looking at the default Shepard which looked great for it's time and far from cartoonish. But tbh, any of the custom made shepards looked like Gumby and Clayface got weird and had a child. They were so bad compared to the faces I've seen designed for DA:I. I'm happy with the new faces, and I think they are leaps and bounds better than many games available. yeah default Shep does look good but then I think the Unreal engine does do faces better I think in general compared with Frostbite. Although I wil argue it's probably not quite as impressive on the locations front as Frostbite is. tbh I feel it's swings and roundabout's really and depends on what the studio wants to achieve with their game. I wouldn't say Frostbite's a complete disaster as I've made a few attractive Inquisitors in DAI I feel. But I have to admit I find it easier to make a good looking Shep than I do a good looking Quizzy.

I think all default females look meh in BioWare games, this is nothing new or any reason to be upset. Customization is key, and I love being able to craft a character look I find interesting or attractive. The only default I have ever used was Dragon Age 2 FemHawke, as she really had a great look. It could be worse....you might be forced to play a disgusting, craggy MAN, with no choice for a female character like that other obscure RPG. What was it called again? ....Oh yeah, Witcher, that was it. *waits for pitchforks and angry mob*

Something that's existed in Mass Effect since....um...the first game. Almost 10 years ago. Far as I'm concerned the Sara = Ugly thing is just a shitty meme at this point that people are just hoping on. 11 pages in 12 hours, and 49 likes... It seems you've struck a chord. First, I'd like to start by saying that I don't understand why people get so offended on behalf of a completely fictitious character. Also, you'd "date the hell out of her"? Obviously, that's only if she were real, which she's not. The distinction is important, because most people who feel comfortable freely criticizing this clump of pixels would likely never do the same to a real, feeling person. I know I wouldn't. I don't find her attractive at all, nor do I find her "ugly". I think she's sort of goofy looking; maybe a bit happy-go-lucky. That's not to my taste, and I'll absolutely be using the CC to edit her. That's about as much as I've said on the topic, to this point. I'm seeing a lot of hurt feelings, defensiveness, and disingenuous arguments proffered when Sara's default appearance is more deeply critiqued, though, and I'd like to comment on that. Repeatedly, I see those who offer criticism painted as being shallow sexists who must prefer a more sexualized female lead. This has almost never been the case, and is strawman to the utmost degree. BioWare chose to use a model whom most would regard as sexy and traditionally beautiful. If that's an issue, take it up with them. It's not really relevant here, though. The actual issue is that, in many images and videos we've seen, BioWare seems to have done a terrible job rendering this model. Unlike Scott, Sara looks nothing like her real-life model, to most of us. Far more importantly to us, she doesn't look like a believable facsimile of a living person. The fact that this is being said loudly and frequently, and is maybe starting to "get old" for some, does not make it less worthy an opinion. No offense intended, but this backlash is classic BSN. If something is said too many times, the community turns en masse upon it. This is particularly true if the observation is a negative opinion of a game that isn't universally shared. The fact that many people feel this way should give you pause; particularly when they can provide visual support for their opinions. You don't have to agree with them, but you could relax and accept their views with more grace. Starting threads like this never ends well for the community. It just creates "sides" and divisions over silly, petty stuff. It's just a game. A single character's editable face in the game, in fact.

Women obsessing over looks in large an evolutionary trait to attract a mate and has nothing to do with people complaining about default character look in video game. But hey you found another thing to cram gender politics in, good job there. Sara and some other characters look mediocre, people have every right to complain about product they spend their hard earned money on. You being offended is a most irrelevant thing. But there are women who may read these complaints about Sara and Cora who might think, "If this is what they think about the look of a pixel woman, what do they say about real women and how they look?" The line between game and reality can become blurred when insults of ugly and man jaw seem to be casually thrown about. Then you add the photoshopped versions of these characters others create to 'fix' their appearance and it's disheartening as a woman to see that. "That is what a woman should look like" Really? I don't care if someone doesn't like Sara's default look, that's cool, you (general not specific) don't have to. But vehemently slandering her appearance is a reflection on how women in real life are treated for their appearance. This is a good reminder that we're still dealing with real people, even when discussing VG characters. Thanks, lyn. While I usually don't deep-dive into such discussions, anyway, this will forever be in my mind, now.

I don't care if you like Sara's face. More power to you.
As for me, Sara's face looks a little off somehow. Maybe its the animation. I'm not talking about her face model at all. I'm sure she's a lovely person.
And Cora's hair looks like shit. A continuing trend of Bioware's odd fascination with ugly sideburns and buzzcuts and Skrillex dubstep.

I'm fine with them making an unconventional pretty face. It's only the default anyway. What matters are the quality of the animations. I do find it odd she barely resembles the model they scanned while Scott looks much closer to his.

I'm in my 30s, I've been around the block, around the world in fact, and Sara is easily someone I would "date the shit out of" to use your eloquent phrasing. Yeah she's got unusual features, at least for a white protagonist. OK. Moving on. Knew a woman from Latin America a while back, similar facial features. I thought she was gorgeous. If anything the male Ryder kid looks like a fairly typical, bland American TV hero. Like Nathan Drake or any other inoffensively good looking male protagonist I see nowadays. Sara's got actual character. Shepard had character. I'll take that anytime.

My views:
On Sara's face. Not a supermodel. Not terrible. I like it.
On being offended. Many criticism of Sara's face are fine. Constructive even. Some, most definitely, are not. It all comes down to tone and intent.

Those kinds of comment's are just rude for the sake of being rude. There are many real life Women out there who have what people refer to as 'Man jaw's' and are still extremely attractive. Take a look at a British atress called Alison King. She has very well defined facial features, and yet I -and many other's- think she's stunning.

Bioware is the PC of developers. If people were expecting supermodel looking characters, then they will be solely disappointed. Have you seen the model they chose for Sara? Maybe you should do a Google image search for "Jayde Rossi". "Supermodel-looking" is exactly what you'll find; or more accurately, "Victoria's Secret Model-looking". This is the model BioWare chose. The vast majority of complaints I've seen have nothing to do with Sara's lack of "hotness". They are based upon the fact that she is a poor facsimile of a real human being, in the views of the critic. The fact that she isn't as hot as Jade is irrelevant. Scott Ryder has no such issue, looking fairly similar to his model, and relatively lifelike. Same goes for Cora and Liam: lifelike. Disagreeing is fine, but at least know the argument. Edit: This is what I meant in my earlier post, when I said, "Nothing good comes of these threads." While I stand 100% by everything said, and I'm tired of strawman arguments and moving of the goalposts from BioWare apologists in regard to Sara's designers, I don't feel any of the heat this post would seem to imply.

Still people are different, they like different things and they usually (in a free and open society) like to speak about what they like and about what they don't. So as you found rude people expressing their opinions, I find equally rude criticizing others because they do not share your point of view whatever constructive or uncostructive it might be. The idea behind this farcical thread is that people that voiced their negative opinion on Sara's look (mostly because BW didn't do a proper job) should not say that because someone on the net might be offended? Should I auto-censor my view to keep someonelse comfortable? Well sorry won't happen if someone find other people opinions rude then they should toughen up because life isn't certainly a safe-space, much less the internet. Also keep in mind we are speaking about an in-game character so none should be offended about that. This entire offensive/rude idea in this case is simply ridiculous. It's not a real person.

For me, it's not the subjective opinions that are offensive. It's the way they are expressed.
It's the difference between the two following statements.
"I don't find Sara attractive because I think her jaw is too pronounced." "Sara is the ugliest of the uglies and everyone that made her is ugly because they got infected by her ugly."
