Not ignoring the concerns that surfaced from the hands on previews, namely the bug infested experience and the subpar animations, there's actually a lot more positive aspects to see than the negatives. Bugs can be fixed (and on that regard im happy I only get to play the game on the 23rd cause by then a day1 patch will probably be out). Animations not so much at this point. But here's a few articles that give a much brighter picture of the game. www.gamereactor.eu/previews/507473/Mass+Effect+Andromeda+Hands-On/?page=3stevivor.com/previews/mass-effect-andromeda-pc-xbox-ps4/www.rpgsite.net/feature/5335-mass-effect-andromeda-hands-on-finally-reassured-and-impressed-by-bioware-s-latestIn a few weeks we will get the reviews, that's when I'll get concerned or overhyped for the game. For now, just trying to keep a positive line of thought TLDR - a few highlights from the links and other reviews - Combat needs an adjustment period but seems solid, fun and extremely customizable with tons of choice on skills progression - Character and NPCs seem to be as good as always by bioware standards, making you want to stop and listen and engage in conversation with NPCs. Main characters have tons of lines, some as much as sheppard had in ME3 - Dialogue system has been considered good and better than Paragon/Renegade. They all say your character seems a lot more complex and nuanced thanks to the new system. - Factions to join and oppose as side content - Lots of settlements and talking npcs all around (thats actually from IGN but seems the empty soulessness from DAI "towns" is a thing of the past) - Some of the side quests played on the previews were deemed "great" - Its massive. There is at least 1 planet that is the size of all the maps in DAI together. One reviewer said that all 7 planets are that big, but i doubt it since he didnt have a chance to actually see them. - RPG elements are back. It seems they put together the rpg aspect of ME1, the character interaction of ME2 and the combat of ME3, and turned them all into a cohesive system for MEA. - It will be hard to reach the end of the game with all companions on good terms with you (not impossible, but not easy either). Also seems you'll have to do some hard choices when meddling between companion feuds (Jack/Miranda in ME2?) - Nomad drives better than Mako - The environments look beautiful, detailed and completely different from one another. - Tempest and galaxy map look amazing. - Besides bugs and glitches, there is nothing to be concerned about for the lack of marketing until now, as many feared. Now please take all this with a grain of salt ofc, cause its only been a few, previously selected by the devs, hours of gameplay and thats not much to go on. PS: Please try to keep the discussion civil. I'm trying to highlight the positives of the reviews so far. There are other threads where we can talk about the negatives.

Im choosing to be positive about the game. I see myself enjoying it no matter what. The only thing that could hurt that is the game literally not working.

Besides.....game bugs are mostly ignorabled overall, unless they break a quest. And given state of current technology, bugs will be dealt with.

Most of the positive guys seem to gush over the things that was known before the preview event like how the combat looks good... well, duh. But I digress.
There are a few things in particular that made me relieved after the event here: - You have ME1/2-esque character meetings in the game between missions discussing where to go next. - You can flirt with everyone even if they ultimately can't romance you - The dialogue system does seem to be as good as it should be from what we knew on paper. Only concern here is that the IGN gal said there were mostly only 2 choices available when the wheel showed up for her, so my guess is they're still kinda sticking to the ME3 formula but using all 4 tones for "moments" maybe. - There are semi-cinematic moments of action where you can control Ryder. Upon falling from something in orbit or near-orbit, it looks like a cutscene but you actually have to steer free-falling Ryder and that sounds cool and something I wouldn't expect.
But the mentions that face animations still look janky and particularly that some of the dialogue was notably "dorky/goofy" kinda makes me dial back expectations. I shouldn't expect better but I've talked at length about this in the past and how I feel the degrading prose is something that has happened more since some of the older BioWare games I played. One of the trailers also had that "Yeah, no way this is home" line which, I know you can understand it in different ways, but it just sounded pretty tryhard to me. Both the IGN girl and the Giant Bomb guys said the dialogue was expository in a very blatant way during the opening to the point of being a little jarring. I do worry the game ends up being like "ME1 without subtlety".

You may think the facial animations are fine, but I think Sara's* are distractingly bad. *I haven't had any problem with Scott's or anyone else's facial animations, TBH. Just like the debate over DAI hair--you may not care about the lack of options and the plethora of UGLY options, but a LOT OF PEOPLE DID AND STILL DO.

I buy games to have fun, not to complain about every little thing or because everyone says "you must buy this" and I'm still yet to be disappointed by one BW game I own. I felt burned after purchasing BioShock Infinite because it sounded like the second coming of Half Life 2. All the talk about the incredible narrative, Elizabeth's lively AI, but I finished the game in 2 sittings, felt Liz had the most static AI I'd seen since Sonic Heroes or something and the story was only as good as its introduction and ending which were good. The rest was a mess and definitely not 8/10-stuff to me. That was the point when I realized I should not listen to reviews because the aggregator as a whole, Metacritic, had totally misled me with a universal praise of a half-baked game. Reviewers were impressed with the story for the notion that it dealt with historic themes, nevermind its completely un-subtle execution of incorporating those. From the second combat started the entire game turned into a tryhard, gory mess and the supposedly special setting turned into a bunch of background imagery for me. Worst purchase ever.

Yeah I think if a game is hyped too much or attacked too much, most likely it's a balance of good/bad and pretty much enjoyable in the end. However sometimes a review can also be dead on and a warning, but I only heed those if many reliable people have said "don't buy it!"

This may seem strange, but if the majority complains enough then someone will eventually actually do something about it. Its not about people not being able to enjoy the game. But its complaining about the lack of proper quality. If people hadn't said a thing after the infamous "disarm scene" then I do wonder if Bioware would have spend as much time fixing the facial animations as they are doing right now.

Did any of the press post detailed specs of the pc they were using when they encountered hard frame spikes?
I seen one speculated that he was running at 4k, but I have my doubts on most reviewers being able to actually notice the difference.

While I'm definitely in the "cautiously hopeful" camp for ME:A, I can understand the criticism of some of the facial animations we've seen. Some people have, in my opinion, taken those criticisms too far, but by and large I'm more than ok with the idea of "complain 'cause it might make it better" even if you plan on playing the game (and enjoying it!) anyway.
Sara's face in particular had very...unrealistic expressions in various videos. Some of the still shots of her look nice, but just like Sheploo, a decent looking face can be ruined by poor animations. ME3 was the worst of the lot, as far as I'm concerned, and DA:I was a massive improvement even if it, too could have been better. As long as we get facial animations on par with DA:I (and hopefully better, since Inquisition still was subpar) I'll be happy enough if the rest of the game is strong.

I also don't think people are taking into account that Ryder's face can be customized. If a company can develop a game where the protagonist's face can be fully customized, and still manage to have Uncharted level facial animations, then that's beyond impressive.

The faces looked better and at times they animated right but for a lot of scenes they didn't express the fitting emotions, like someone will yell in an angry voice but have a calm and smiling face. It's as if the overall quality has dropped because improved face graphics and movable parts become harder to control as an animator.
