Pepper Potts did it first. It's also far from a newfangled SJW crusade. Comics have been obsessed with giving male superheroes miniature distaff counterparts since the 50s. Even before Supergirl came on the scene, Lois Lane had a brief stint as "Superwoman." Also, Batgirl, X-23, Miss Sinister, SheHulk, Hawkgirl, Aquagirl, Harley Quinn, Miss Martian, Ms. Marvel, Dani Cage, Lady Octopus, and lots and lots of others are all designed as versions of established superheroes and supervillains but with breasts, and most of them have been around for decades. This isn't a new trend, it's an enduring obsession in the industry. Yes, but none of them ruined their male counterpart by taking over their place permanently. It's a really quite disrespectful move to be honest. Sure they did. In several of those cases, the new character indefinitely stepped into the role of the previous figure. Loki shapeshifted female, Miss Sinister was a case of Mr. Sinister's disembodied consciousness taking over a woman's body. Carol Danvers basically replaced Mar-vell in the early 80s because of his problematic deadness. As for it being disrespectful, that's really not particularly relevant to the question of whether it's a recent trend or not. I'm inclined to be dismissive of the idea that a replacement with breasts, like Carol Danvers with Captain Marvel, is somehow less respectful than a replacement without them, Like Bucky with Captain America, but whatever. Riri Williams just seems like a random place to draw some kind of moral line on a time honored comic book tradition, when she isn't even adopting the previous character's moniker, like with Carol Danvers recently being retitled Captain Marvel instead of Miss Marvel.

And if you question this casting you're seen as a sexist person determined to bring down entertainment. Pretty odd, considering that the entertainment industry is rather well known and documented for its sexism (*cough* gender-pay gap *cough*.) And not just in Hollywood, mind you. I don't know about that, but what I do know is that there are some who'll call you sexist if you don't like the casting.

Christ, I swear we're getting more people here pledging to not watch the show than we did angry 16 year-old girls who wanted to quit because Matt Smith was leaving.

I think it's because of what some feminists do. Just as it's the same for many sexists and racists to come on and denounce a lot of material unjustly as 'SJW-propaganda'. Just saying. My advice; quit playing to dog whistle politics and snarl words, and stop looking for ammunition to use in some bizarre sense of cultural warfare. That applies every bit to alt-right MRA nutjobs and wingnuts as it does to moonbat SJW tumblrinas and snowflakes. Don't forget extreme feminists!

And if you question this casting you're seen as a sexist person determined to bring down entertainment. The funny thing is that anybody who has been a Doctor Who fan for a while knows that we always have this little freak out every time a new Doctor is announced. Before it was that Peter Capaldi was a bad fit for the Doctor, or Matt Smith was way too young and unknown of an actor, etc.

I'm not going to call you a sexist for not liking the casting. I don't think it's optimal myself. But I'm willing to be proven wrong here. Are you?

Exaggeration I know but there are couple of people who just love to see certain shows and movies as racist and sexist. Just like there are many people who just love to see certain shows and movies as 'pandering to SJW's and other assorted leftist values.' At the end of the day, just judge the series by its own merits. Don't let it sit bad just because a woman is playing a role that has been entirely played by a man. For that matter, instead of going on the attack, how about we all just chill out before this whole thread that was created to discuss the next incarnation of the main character on a sci-fi show becomes another yet another selfsame battlefield for the forum's supposed 'cultural factions'?

Like Pepper and Batgirl and Supergirl and Aquagirl and Hawkgirl and before her, Riri herself goes by a distinct variation of the original character's (Iron Man) name. It's a dumb variation, but still a variation.

But they're more like UFO's here; I'm always hearing about them and talking to people who swear that they've seen them before, but I've yet to actually ever see one myself. I do however see a disproportionate amount of... shall we say, right-leaning types that get rather over-eager to present every new bit of information as some kind of attack from the left. My dog isn't in this race. This shouldn't even be a thread about it.

A huge exaggeration of exactly the sort I was referencing in the comment you replied to, kind of hilariously. Your response presented the exact perspective I was groaning about at the time. Because of how I think it's bullshit.

I did watch it. I rather enjoyed it, and I think your opinion of it being such is quite unwarranted.
Otherwise, I'm seeing a lot of white noise here... Anti capitalist themes, the whole Bill 'I'm a black Lesbian!" thing, the constant reminders that she's gay.... Idk, but it's like them making James Bond a woman to be honest. Doctor Who has never been totally pro-capitalist (which is fair, they've never been totally pro-collectivist either. Just ask the Cybermen.) To the rest, I didn't see an issue with that. I was more concerned about her decisions in the story (i.e. letting humanity get enslaved against the Doctor's wishes) or how Moffet can't man up and kill a character, while basically repeating what happened to Clara last season. To be honest, why should it matter what economic bent some sci-fi show takes? If that's the case, write a fanfic where Gordon Gecko and John Galt team up to fight alien zombies or something.
