Everything we have seen from Alec is completely out of tone with what Bioware are going for. They want it to be lighter and fresher. They also want an emotional hook to get going (losing your father, having to assume leadership), and to try to make the player feel out of their depth while leaving room for personal growth through the story.

I hope the player character isn't too emo but I haven't seen any evidence of that so far. If you don't like how he or she looks you can change it up with the character creator.

Don't really care about Alec specifically one way or the other, but I would like to be able to play as an older protagonist sometime. I'm not really that old myself (31) but I already sort of feel like playing a long litany of 18-25 year olds is kind of limiting from a role-playing perspective. Mostly because I remember being 18-25 and I hardly knew my head from my ass so it's kind of hard for me to imagine such a character having anything but a purely ideological viewpoint. They have next to no experience or training to back anything up with. An 18 year old making sweeping value judgements about life, the universe, or whatever just comes off as silly. I can't suspend my disbelief that they would have the necessary combination of experience, common sense, or technical learning to know what the hell they are talking about.

As an example: if Shepard was that young, on what the hell kind of authority or understanding would she be able to challenge Mordin's thinking, say, or Wrex's?  "Well, I read about this in Shakespeare in senior english..."  It's just dumb.  This is one of the things that is nice about Shepard.  Shepard already has enough marked experiences to be believable.      

Alec "I only wish I was as cool as Shepard" Ryder. Fucking second-rate, washed up N7 trash, not good enough for the Spectres is not good enough, period. 0/10, would not play, would not even twitch-stream.

Alec was just struck what a failure of a father he was after realising what his kids turned out to be, so he started cosplaying a better, younger role model.
