It's illuminating how quick people are to disavow any negative criticism (to the point of saying it's just clickbait, or the guy doesn't have a clue) yet lap up the IGN previews, for example, without any second thought about what that means for their opinion.

This review hits the nail on the head for me tbh. It's 100% the impression I have as well.
The Kotaku review is a joke. It reads like your typical bought review. Everything is just super duper great? Yeah, right.
I don't know this gaming site or the reviewer. All I can say is that EVERY single gameplay video I've watched with my own eyes has piss poor writing. It's exactly as dull and lifeless as this guy describes.
It's fine if people want to live in denial a bit longer. Or simply don't mind the staggering drop in quality. Even compared to DAI. Everything I've seen of the game so far has left me speechless in the worst possible way. Never did I expect the game to be WORSE than the worst aspects of DAI. At least that game had great characters and great banter. A passable main story and a wonderful secret main story in Mythal.
So the god-awful sudden chosen one bullshit that was DAI gets a repeat? Wow. This game looks like the most uninspired cash grab ever. I'm genuinely disgusted.
My only hope is that the game just has a bad start. But then again the Peebee mission bits wer TERRIBLE as well. DAI got a lot better after leaving the hinterlands. So there's hoping against hope for a similar situation...
MEA looks like The Sims in space to me though. Dull plastic doll characters engaged in trite conversation. I'm having more fun talking to my colleagues at work...
Combat looks decent enough. Especially multiplayer. So I guess EA has fucked my favorite developer over now at last. MP game with an atrocious SP experience. People called it back when MP was announced for ME3. And now it's obvious they were right. (I loved the MP, but still.)
The worst part is that there goes the Dragon Age franchise as well, I suppose. I was SO hyped for DA4 after Inquisition. Not anymore.
If the entire game is like what we've seen in gameplay footage, then Bioware is done in my eyes.
Feel free to disagree. I for one cannot understand how anybody can be hyped at this point. It's a sad sad example of how EA sucks all life out of the companies they buy.
Pretty landscapes do not make a good game...

So this guy likes the Mass effect 3 ending and hates Witcher 3? His opinion means nothing to me.
This is the thing about reviewers perhaps only 10% of them have a relevant opinion to your interests.
If you're looking for a good black metal band, you don't take the opinion of somebody who listens to Drake, shit if you're looking for good rap you don't listen to somebody who likes Drake.
Same goes for games, take reviews for what they are, nothing. These people aren't special, they just happened to land a job playing games and blogging about them.
I'll form my own opinion in a week, like an adult should.

The Kotaku review is a joke. It reads like your typical bought review. Everything is just super duper great? Yeah, right. It's... a first impressions write-up. I wouldn't expect a review for awhile--they take their sweet time poring over a game over there. Kotaku may have its flaws (ymmv), but they're not bought. At least as long as Stephen Totilo is running the place, you can bet on that.

What's the god-awful writing some people keep talking about? Give me an example. Nowdays people like to throw bad writing into anything to add another negative to the list. It's just like the SJW term, it's been used so often, basically everywhere, it has lost its basic meaning. Let me see how smart you are.

Mass Effect 2 has 48, 48 people! 48 perfect reviews. That's pinnacle. It will never get that good for the series again. Best case scenario, Andromeda gets a 85ish on metacritic. Worse case, mid 70s. If it's lucky a handful of perfect reviews. I don't see this game reviewing nearly as good as the OT, especially ME2.
But you shouldn't worry. By now you're probably already decided if you're gonna buy it or not. So who cares about reviews.

Preview, not a review. Kotaku seems to have really liked it. I guess this game might be divisive. Or it might just be that John Walker has odd tastes. He really loved Kingdoms of Amalur for some reason. Is that the game that has two separate dialog systems for no apparent reason? Kingdoms of Amalur? I don't remember it having two dialog systems. I do remember it having poor dialogues, poor quest designs and a very themepark MMOish world design (zone with fixed level mobs you went through in linear fashion and mob respawned so backtracking was annoying in some places). The only interesting part was the lore (it was pretty much copy-paste of Irish Celtic lore) and the combat system was cool (chakram FTW!). Going by how he doesn't like The Witcher 3, think ME3 ending was good and his own writing, I don't think he knows what good dialogues and quest design are. That or he's just writing for the clickbaits (which is working very well it seems).

I am used to Gaming Websites having one general tone about a Game even when different people write about it. At least not have two so drastically different articles. If Germanys biggest Gaming Website "Gamestar" would release two so drastically different previews everybody would question their professionalism. I mean sure everyone is subjective but your Job describtion as Gaming Journalist is to keep as much objectivity as you possibly can.

It's a bit cult like.

It's a bit cult like. The issue remains.. he does not even try to also show some good Points. That would be his damn Job as Gaming Journalist no matter how much he dislikes a Game. It leads to people questioning his competence. He is clearly writing fully subjective wich makes his Preview as credible as any User Review on Metacritic will be.. Why is it a cult when we point out that almost all other Previewers(20+) said the game was good to great? You can of course assume that all of them where bought.. And most discussing in this thread have watched at least the first hour of the Game.. some even more.. And most seem to disagree with him based on what we have seen. The Game is not a mystery with barely any Gameplay shown as it was 2 weeks ago.. Now we have hours to watch and form an opinion. He has every right to have his opinion.. but so does everyone here that after watching the Game for up to 4 Hours.. If we grant him his subjectivity we have to give it to everybody here as well. I have watched close to the first 2 Hours and i really liked it. Its not perfect but no game really is. He can have his opinion.. i have mine
