ME3 had bad animations and was buggy. So did ME2 and ME1. It's not like this is a sudden new occurrence. While true, the quality of the facial animations in ME:A is much worse than in either of those three games. I'm liking the game so far and think the story and characters are mostly on par with previous Bioware games, but most of the criticism aimed at the quality of the facial animations is earned. The game lacks polish and has some noticeable technical flaws that also aren't limited to the animations. The current metacritic rating (74%) is ballpark for what the game deserves. I think it's moreso the quality based in 2017 that is a problem. A lot of games are just doing it better... And they are really doing it better because their focus on cinematic is in a smaller frame compared to an RPG. Even The Witcher series, which has good facial capture, is still not perfect and hits that uncanny valley issue most of the time...the body movements were a bit more animated to compensate for it though. Andromeda feels like it followed the standard for BioWare for a while...and it bit them in the butt. This is not new though: Dragon Age: Origins was completely outdated when it was released...but it was well received regardless. The thing here is...something is missing and no one seems to be sure what it is.

No doubt that some fans' perception of ME:A is being colored by experiences with other open world RPGs that did what Bioware Montreal wanted to do better, but it's not just new releases. The most recent games I played prior to jumping in ME:A was ME1 through ME3, and the first thing that stood out for me was how poor the facial animations look in ME:A compared to those three games. Compare Udina in ME3 to Foster Addison in ME:A: Udina looks so much better. Part of it is also because the ME3 devs had the camera focused on the side of his face rather than dead on. Why not use camera angle tricks if they couldn't get Addison to look right? That's also part of giving a game a cinematic feel.

Lighting also helps with that too, to hide wrinkles and other issues.
I don't know. Addison is the most egregious example but in truth, most of the games facial animations are ok...the problem is the average "feel" it has makes the game look older than it is...anachronistic upon release.

And the studio @ Montreal shut down because they screwed up the game. What the hell's going on over there?
