I've been playing with the iPhone app and focused on the one function you can perform effectively with it off line, Strike Teams. I suspect most people are ignoring them right now, while focusing on playing matches. This is a mistake...
Why they matter: Strike Teams are one of the few ways (only way?) to get Mission Funds. You need Mission Funds to buy gear and respecs, and the time available to buy specific gear is limited. For example, right now there is a Juggernaut Shield available for 120 MF. This is only available for the next 13 days, after that who knows if it will be available again.
How to use them: You start with one strike team. There are 8 missions available to start, and the missions also expire after a period of time. However, new missions will become available, so there will be new missions available, up to 8, over time. There are Bronze, Silver, and Gold missions, with corresponding difficulties. You can also buy additional Strike Teams with Mission Funds. Strike Teams can be assigned to a mission, they will have a percentage chance of success, and they will execute the mission over a period of time, anywhere from about 1 hour to 6 hours. When the mission is over they have either succeeded or failed.
Success: If they succeed you will get Mission Funds. For a Bronze mission you will get 5, for a Bronze Apex mission you will get 10. The Strike Team will also level up, which makes them more effective in the next mission. They may also receive a perk, which will give a bonus in specific circumstances on future missions.
Failure: It doesn't appear that they can die, but they can receive a flaw (penalty). This flaw will make certain missions harder in the future. For example one of my teams now has a negative modifier against Outlaws, making missions against them slightly less likely to succeed. However, you can also pick up a perk (I just got Lucky(5) on a failure) and will still get experience. You can also repeat a mission, trying again. There is a ring around the mission that fills up over time as you attempt the mission. I don't know what this ring means yet (but I will find out in 5 hours). This ring is just a status indicator of how far along the mission is, however there can be some UI artifacts on the phone where the ring will not clear once the mission has completed.
Strike Team Gear: You can also spend Mission Funds to buy gear for your Strike Teams to make them more effective. I don't know if these are permanent, but given the cost (40+ MF) I assume that they are.
Recommendations: I used my initial Mission Funds to buy a second Strike Team. You can run Strike Team missions at all times, even while you are playing the game, doing other things. By keeping Strike Teams constantly engaged, you can build up the Mission Funds you will need for gear. There are also SP benefits (but really, who cares?).
Edit: Adding some information about strike team gear. Every strike team can have one piece of gear that is permanently attached to them. These items are pretty expensive (up to 300 MF). If you buy a new piece, it will replace and destroy the old piece. This gear comes in two types, items that generally improve effectiveness, and items that improve them in specific situations. For example, Black Widows will give a team +9 effectiveness in all missions, but Quick Response Vehicle IV will give +20 effectiveness in hostage rescue missions. Note that general effectiveness gear costs more, so Black Widows cost 225 MF, but the QRV only 150. My opinion is that it is more cost effective to buy an item like a QRV and use that team for specific high difficulty missions.

Quick question Dave the Scrub : would you recommend running these strike teams from the APEX HQ mobile app? In game? Or does it matter? I don't even have my physical copy of the game yet so I'm hoping to hit the ground running when I start playing MEAMP. I have a lot of floor scrubbing to do before I attempt a gold match. Sounds like I might need the mission funds.

The advantage of using the mobile app is you can start a new mission while not at your computer, like if at work. I started a quick mission that netted 5 MF last night when I left work, and then sent the team out on a new mission when I booted up the game when I got home.

Yes. Use the app when you don't have access to in game.

Just used the app, 1 successful and one failure so far, bought another strike team as well. Good app to pass the time until Andromeda releases here, thanks for the well detailed post Dave.

Fairly certain the bar is just mission progress Definitely not. I just started a repeat of a mission, and the bar started 80% full. I have a picture of two of my available missions (can't figure out how to get it into the post yet). But, you can see one of them has a bar that is almost full, but the time that would be spent on that mission is the same as always.

The bars are ussualy some kind of mastery level for a mission in these games, it's possible there could be some one time rewards for mastering them, and after that you can keep repeating them. Just wild guesses.

I hate it when games do this. Want to have access to certain content? You better play that boring as shit minigame we have here! Where are the good old times where you buy a game and then you have access to everything it offers? Guess I'm getting old... Good post on the Strike Teams, though.

One thing I did wrong that I wish I could go back and undue; I bought a 3rd strike team thinking that it would help me gather MP sooner (in theory it would). However even my best team only has a 60-65% chance of success on the silver missions. There's usually only 2 bronze missions at any given time so now I've got my new strike team collecting dust until I can get one to consistently pass silver.
Lesson: Buy 2 teams, then buy gear. Buy the 3rd team only once you have a team that can pass silver.

But I agree, two teams to start with seems optimal. A 3rd team costs 80MF.

Isn't there also a chance they get perks for completing missions? I'm gonna let both teams do 2 or 3 bronze missions before silver.

It is possible to get perks, and flaws if they fail the mission, the flaws are usually -10% chance of success if they match the keyword. Hero complex will give a -10 to Holding out for a hero. Faction x Hystera has the same for any mission with the faction. It's possible to have the flaw removed, but i'm not sure if its based on overcoming the flaw keyword in question, or just general missions. You wont hit a reliable % for silver until about 11, gold follows the mp recommended as well.

Has anyone tried putting equipment on a team yet? At the prices, I have to assume they're unlocks and not one time use, but haven't wanted to risk it until I know for sure, especially since I haven't saved enough to unlock all the available gear yet.

Where can I find the Juggernaut shield? Don't see it listed in store. When you are on the "customize character" screen there are 4 icons on the top. Click the one that looks like a lightning bolt. This brings up a screen for 2 temporary enhancements and one gear slot. Clicking on the gear slot will bring up a sub menu where you will see the Jug Shield listed on the left. I believe you buy it from this screen, but I don't have 120 MF to try it. I also believe you can buy it directly from the phone app.

I've completed my first mission and my team became "Rugged" (positive trait) Does anyone have an idea what difference it makes? The chance of success remained the same on the following mission.
