I'm working on my review for THE UNITED FEDERATION OF CHARLES but I'm not quite done yet. Still, here's my initial impressions of the game.
CT PHIPPS' MASS EFFECT: ANDROMEDA REVIEW
Well, that was definitely a Mass Effect game.
That's probably the best way to describe my experience with Andromeda, which is a game that I had mixed feelings going into. Like many fans of the series, I felt burned by the ending of Mass Effect 3. I wasn't one of the people who believed it was worth naming EA one of the worst companies in the world and it didn't kill my children or anything but it felt dissonant to have an uncertain ending when I'd put literally years of investment into my Shepard's relationships. I, really, felt like i was done with the series afterward and wasn't sure if I was ever going to look back.
Still, I had a lot of fun in the Mass Effect universe and was intrigued by the possibility of returning to it. Unfortunately, it felt like the newest game's premise was going to side-step the ending of the original trilogy rather than address it. Your character is going to be a colonist in a cryo-ship which has made a six-hundred-year journey across the void between galaxies until they reached Andromeda. When you awake, the events of the original trilogy are long in the past and you are surrounded by favorites of the original series without the third game to "sully" it.
At least, that's how I felt.
Really, I have to stress the game isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination. It's a game I'm going to enjoy playing all fifty or so hours of content it provides and which gave me a satisfying, if slightly generic player experience. The characters were likable, if not especially memorable, and the graphics were lovely except for the faces. The gameplay was fun but mostly a return to its roots. This is a game which is fun and I highly recommend but it's also a game which is going to be perhaps a little disappointing if players were expecting something truly epic.
The premise of the game, as mentioned, is you are Sarah (Fryda Wolff) or Scott Ryder (Tom Taylorson doing a Nolan North impression) and you're the son of Alec Ryder (Clancy Brown) who is the Pathfinder a.k.a Chief Scout for the Andromeda Initiative. The Andromeda Initiative, despite being amazingly well-equipped for a private enterprise, ends up hitting dark matter pockets and scatters across the Helius Cluster. Many of the Initiative's leaders are killed and you discover the worlds you were going to settle have all been rendered uninhabitable by six-hundred-year-old alien tech. Worse, a hostile alien race called the Kett take umbrage to your presence. You are forced to step up and become the new Pathfinder who will find a way to colonize this cluster despite the fact it's a post-apocalypse hellhole.
Weirdly, this game feels like it's riffing from a bunch of other popular sci-fi video games. The Remnant's ruins feel very distinctly like the Forerunner ruins of Halo and the fact they're referred to as "Vaults" plus the fact much of the game takes place on desert scavenger worlds in a giant Mako-esque Dune buggy evokes Borderlands. There's also the fact the Kett turn out to be what might charitably be called an "Evil Empire" which is opposed by a plucky resistance. Given the original Mass Effect trilogy was a fusion of Star Wars and Star Trek (which made it, effectively, Babylon Five), that's not surprising but the references are rather notable. The fact the majority of aliens you'll meet are ones from the Milky Way also feels somewhat cheap.
Despite this, I actually state I feel like the game succeeds in reminding me why I liked Mass Effect. Liam, Cora, Drack, Suvi, and the others don't have anything on Mass Effect 2's cast but they're all fun people I enjoyed hanging around with (as much as you can enjoy spending time with fictional people). They're sort of all blandly pleasant at worse (ala Kaiden and Ashley) and archetypically endearing at best. The romances feel a bit weak and I can't help but think fans will take them too personally. It strikes me Bioware may have been onto something just making everyone bisexual ala Dragon Age 2. Certainly, you just need to sacrifice realism sometimes for player enjoyment.
Gameplay wise, the game plays like, well, Mass Effect. It's a shooter with RPG elements as well as a return of the Mako (in all but name). The only real complaint I have about it is the absence of the Renegade and Paragon system which was really something I loved. The Ryder twins feel a little more generic without their option to be outstandingly noble or ruthlessly psychotic. Still, the writing is crisp on that end too with both of the siblings having a Nathan Drake-esque adventurous spirit, awkward dorkiness, or a cool professionalism depending on how you want to play them.
In conclusion, this is a fun game and I'm going to continue playing it until I've done just about everything but it's a very "safe" sort of game too. In terms of genre, I'd say this is the Star Wars: The Force Awakens of the franchise. There's a lot of the same beats of the original and very little risk taking but it washed a lot of the bad taste out of my mouth too.
8/10

Just finished the game and I really love this game. It's been a long time since I played a bioware game and couldn't wait to replay it again.

Nearly finished with Voeld (much more to do after this?) and i love this game. Combat is brilliant and im glad i dont have that much control over my team mates, love hitting those combos. I just have an issue with the helemts, what option have yous chose? Helmets on all the time and off in convo or anything? Same goes for team mates.

Here's what I like about the game so far (I'm level 18 and currently exploring Voeld):
- Exploration and combat. That really is the salt of this game. I love exploring new worlds, discovering remnant tech and fighting the Kett. It's my Ryder's favorite hobby. Loving the jump-jets and close range weapons and melee combat and how fast Ryder can run. Gameplay is more fun than ever before. Curiously I found myself liking all that exploring and fighting way more than the actual main story. In that way this game reminds me of Skyrim. The story could definitely be a little more... umm what's the right word... compelling, riveting?
- Family. I knew I was gonna like the Ryder family story. Best moment in the game so far was Alec giving Ryder his helmet. Such a symbolic and emotional moment. Anxiously waiting when Ryders brother will finally wake up. I also like SAM. Adds a new and unseen element to the game. I hope Ryder's connection to SAM becomes more important as the story progresses.
- Many different armor and weapon designs. It's good that there's a wide variety of armor designs and nice to test all the different weapons. They feel unique. Though I miss my Geth Pulse Riffle. Maybe I'll yet find one.

I did a few missions this weekend that were linear corridor shooters. I loved it. It was Mass Effect at its best. It's such a shame most of the game isn't like that.

I'm loving the game, and I'm still not done. Plus, I convinced 4 of my friends who have never played Mass Effect before to get it, and they're all loving it, too. Yes, it has technical issues, but what major RPG doesn't at launch?

I'm loving it and find myself saying, multiple times so far, "HOW ARE PEOPLE NOT LIKING THIS?!" It's a lot of fun, and really feels like Mass Effect to me. But new. And some pretty epic parts already, AND I love the squadmates... In the trilogy I had what I called my Dream Team, ALWAYS Garrus and Wrex, and when Wrex was gone, Garrus and Grunt. So I'm VERY happy I can continue that trend with Vetra and Drack! It's perfect, and they're great together, good banter so far!

I've got 48 hours logged into this game so far.
Yes, there are a few skips in the record, so to speak. The facial animations are lacking, and the character creator is horrifically limited.
But, to my surprise, I'm enjoying the new crew for the most part, and the story has me far more interested than expected. I like the combination of Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2/3, taking strengths from past games and blending them fairly well. To that end, exploration is really fun and combat is as satisfying as ever.
For my money, it feels great to be back in the ME universe, and I'm looking forward to replaying this one a few more times.

The further I get into the game, the more I like it. Really hits the sweet spot for me in terms of giving me what I want. On the balance, really the best I've played so far. I am at the point when I want multiple PTs.

Ahh... the helmet-scene. Not gonna lie, I actually cried a little at that point Played the game without any spoilers, guessed Dad would be gone since Ryder becomes the Pathfinder but dad could have been sick or in stasis. Dying was an option but I was not sure. I have been so happy/excited when I talked to my friend about ME:A that he went and bought it too. We are going to get some coffee and talk about the game later on, when we both have finished it little does he know that I was planning on buying it for him as a gift since I figured that he would like it.

I personally love the game. As far as I can tell, most of the faults people complain about are rooted in the game being so ambitious. For example - the facial animations are not perfect, but it is prohibitively expensive to motion capture everything in a game this big. I will take scope and ambition over minor technical issues like algorithmically generated expressions every time. There are some honest-to-goodness bugs that need to be fixed, but again, this is an issue of scope. Anyone who has worked on enormous software projects can understand this. Huge games will have bugs and I expect most of the egregious ones will be fixed.

Male Ryder's voice acting. Countered by his facial animations. Pretty decent, intriguing main story. Countered by the side quest bloat. Gorgeous looking planets. Countered by the vomit of fetch quests you have to do. Jaal & Liam's banter. Countered by the other dull characters. Outstanding combat. Not countered by anything. Nailed it!

I'm not in the habit of linking videos, but I feel that Totalbiscuit pretty much nailed what I think about this game, I agree with him almost from start to finish.
Be warned, it's a very long one.
TLDR: Great gameplay systems and ideas marred by some poor design decisions and a very clear lack of polish. A good, solid game that could and should have been more, but that I still enjoyed a lot nevertheless.

I have problems with this game, sure, but I do enjoy it. the characters are very alive, very ... 'real' I guess. This doesn't necessarily go towards Lexi and your crew of course, even small NPCs like the Doctor on Kadara, I found myself empathising and caring about greatly. What on earth are you on about? :DD:

Cue the most silly facial expression ever. Yes, for me, I couldn't stop laughing actually, so there was some kind of emotion from the ryder family.

He even states that a lot of times stuff he doesn't like is just his personal preference. He's the best content creator on Youtube, I find. Yes, he's a bit full of himself at times, and I don't always agree with him, but I feel that he's the one that does his best to give every game a fair chance, doesn't blindly jump on hate (or love) bandwagons, he has his bias as we all do but he tries to keep it in check and evaluate the game on its own merits, while being fairly consistent on what he likes and doesn't like. And best of all, he usually shows gameplay footage that's not very doctored, so you can see the product in action for yourself and not cherry picked good or bad bits that fit the narrative. I'm also 100% on his side when he says scores are mostly bogus, so there's that too.

Sooo I think all the hate this game is getting is sort of unwarranted. That said, it is by far the most disappointing BioWare game in terms of general stability. Even Fallout 4 wasn't this buggy for me at launch and that's saying something. I've played roughly 20 hours so far and I've had random crashes, loading loops where the icon in the bottom right will just keep spinning and spinning but I never get the game to start, a bug after the handshake with Jaal where the screen turns black and just freezes, menu bugs where every tab is blank and I can't even exit to menu within the game. Seriously, what the hell. Inquisition was never this bad before.
On the bright side, the combat is super fun and I love the freedom of cherry picking the skills you want without being restricted by class. I'm a bit peeved that we cannot control squad mate powers now. There are many times I've wanted to set up a combo but it's blind luck whether or not they'll use the power you want on the enemy you want. And they're pretty much useless on hardcore, dying all the time.
Story seems pretty predictable so far. I can't believe they'd made navigating the galaxy map even worse than before. Why is there the same animation of zooming into the planet before zooming out? It's such a waste of time and serves no purpose!
The characters are also pretty bland. There isn't an outstanding NPC like Gianni Parasini or Emily Wong from the pack. Squad mates are dull also with the exception of Peebee and Vetra. Drack seems like a by the books grizzled war veteran. Sorry, but I much preferred Wrex. Cora is no Ashley or Miranda and yes, I get it, you were an Asari huntress! You don't have to keep reminding me in every conversation. I miss Joker and EDI already.

That is why I like TB. He doesn't jump on the hate train like everyone else and gives a reasonable opinion on it. Did he like the FOV slider?
