Talking in the BSN couples thread about using dial-up internet 15 years ago, and thinking how soon after we switched to DSL broadband, coupled with the knowledge that people rarely remember much from before the age of about five, led me to the realisation that there are now adults who have no memory of this sound: Oh, I remember that sound. I also remember what it was like when that sound led nowhere, and the whole connection thing failed. Listening to that sound and thinking "Oh god will you guys please just get along so I can get on with my life?" I taught myself how to type on one of these.

I was aware of it around 1999-2000 iirc. It might have been around longer. Really?? Ok, in my defense for missing it I was living in a small town around that time, maybe I missed it. I was aware of the term "Totes my goats", is there any relation to just "Goat?" I've never heard "Totes my goats", and I wouldn't have known that "The Goat" was around for as long as Boogie/JC says, as I first heard it in 2004 in connection with Valentino Rossi, who had just won his 4th consecutive world motorcycling title. The fact that he had done so after switching manufacturers from Honda to Yamaha led to the first claims that he was indeed the Greatest Of All Time, with his teammate Colin Edwards being credited as the man who first said it. His 'official' nickname is "The Doctor", but many people (myself included) still insist he is The Goat. To be honest I've never heard it in any other context until this thread. You live and learn.

It's not tinnitus, but is most prevalent when I'm falling asleep or waking up. I sometimes suspect that I'm just a digital version of Mork from Ork sending information home at the end of the day, as I have also heard it in places where there is no wifi. It doesn't bother me to the point that I would start wearing tinfoil hats, but it really does make me ponder whether or not I'm living in a synthetic simulated universe. My first dial up modem had an epic connection speed of 2400 baud. I don't even know what that means anymore, but I remember those gifs coming through one line at a time!

I had my first ZX Spectrum clone when I was 24. My first games were Alien 8, Knight Lore and Everyone's a Wally. After 30 came my first PC with the Ultima series, Monkey Island and from there... What kind of PC did you have first? Monkey Island : How many episodes did you play? It was a 486DX2 66Mhz with 8MB RAM and an 120MB HDD. It was top of the line at that time. And let's not forget the (awesome) SB AWE32 ... As for Monkey Island: I've started with the first two (You fight like a Dairy farmer!) . Later, after a major hardware overhaul, I played the third and Grim Fandango when it came out (though it was exceedingly buggy...but such a wonderful game) . Lucasarts had some of the best titles in the 90s. Of course I've also got to play the last two but somehow they did not feel the same...

I would have said that was in 94, but I think it had Windows 95 already on it. The memory is pretty hazy on that. I'm pretty sure I moved up to a Pentium II in 98.

I think the term GOAT (as a pun and an acronym for Greatest Of All Time) was first used in conjunction with Earl "The Goat" Manigault, the NY street basketball player. There was a 1996 biopic called "Rebound: The Legend of Earl 'The Goat' Manigault". From there on it entered mainstream and you'll see a lot of debates like who is the GOAT : Jordan or LBJ?

Seems a lot started with some 486DX. 3.11 = the time you could brew a café without running while your PC operated... And the creative SB32...A must have , no need to talk about the joy of the floppy disk... I played Monkey Island the third fisrt, then the 2e, never had the time for the first. Grim Fandango have some reminiscences of Casablanca, and I can't forget this game ,I like so much Glottis, (would be a good friend for Solas)

I remember those gifs coming through one line at a time! I also remember loading jpegs on an Amiga 1200, directly from the hard drive I mentioned earlier, and actually seeing them progress down the screen in a similar fashion as they were decompressed...

I'm still a few years away from 40, but my mom is definitely over 40, and I thought some here might appreciate this anecdote: The other day, she randomly took an interest in what game I am currently playing. So I wound up giving her a crash course in Deus Ex Human Revolution and Mankind Divided...and the way she was able to understand it was by saying "oh, so it's just like the Million Dollar Man?" YES! Yes mom, it is exactly like that! I was so proud of her.

This is how you program kids! You have an error... It should show on the next batch we'll print in two days... When I 1st took programming we had to use the punchcards but we could not key punch them ourselves, we had to write down the code on coding sheets and then have someone else key punch them and submit the job. We also only had a maximum of 5 or 10 computer runs, so if the key puncher made a mistake good bye to a run. The sheer and utter horror of the old days. (no wonder i just made it into year two of programming and dropped it as a career after getting beaten down by advanced assembler.)

Don't get me started on how we used to debug those programs! The sheer horror of going through an enormous pile of punch cards... I quit IT in 1984, got back with a vengeance in 1998.

I regret I did not take any of the optional computer course in high school in the 80's. But I recall not know what to make of them or even guessing how big an impact they might have from that point in the early to mid-80's.
