I'm not even close to 40, but I grew up watching all of the shows I've posted.
Your move old people! Probably the best tv series ever. Still is today. Outstanding. This deserves an excellent. EXCELLENT. I watch reruns from time to time.

Just caught a favorite the other night while channel surfing. "Tuttle." The one where Hawkeye and Trapper concoct a fictitious captain to make sure all his pay goes to a Catholic orphanage! When Frank and Hotlips get suspicious they create a fake personnel bio for him and the best bit is: Trapper: "Hmm...religion?" Hawkeye: "Druid. He likes spending time around trees." Or something like that.

I remember the first time I saw Doctor Who. Fourth Doctor. I'd already seen a picture of Tom Baker somewhere, and I remember thinking his voice was a lot deeper than I imagined. Then I saw the lighthouse episode and kind of loved him. "I have bad news. There's a monster in here and very soon we'll all be dead." And then he grins. The fourth doctor. That's my doctor. First started watching in 1978. I suspect though that (in reference to Uncle's post above) that you must have seen Space 1999 in the UK as that was a Gerry and Sylvia Anderson show (Thunderbirds, UFO etc)? I love him and he was my number one doctor, but I also came to love David Tennant's 10th doctor, so right now they're in a tie for me.

I'm pretty sure I first saw Doctor Who in the US on PBS, which was one of I think two channels that little black and white TV would show. I think I saw Space 1999 at some point, but I don't think I enjoyed it.

Quite a few of the shows that US folk remember fondly were never really shown here in the UK, or weren't popular. Some of my earliest memories are of watching the Fourth Doctor... Though Jon Pertwee was probably 'my Doctor'...

And Robin of Sherwood! It is fair to say that show made me the person I am today. It all started there :-)

I was just thinking that as a young kid, there was so much sci-fi around for me. In addition to things that were mentioned here, there was:
And:
Oddly it all went a bit quiet in the late 80s, with the notable exceptions of TNG and Red Dwarf, until the mid-90s and DS9. B5, Space, Above & Beyond etc...

I like that this is a 40's and up thread, but since I am 41 and I am married to a 46 year old I realize that our experiences are different even though we are only five years apart- he laughs at my cultural touchstones growing up because his are different than mine He makes me laugh so much saying things like "babe- KIDS were watching that and I wasn't a kid at that time..." lulz. Also remember being in 4th grade, seeing Bruce Springsteen video on one of my best friends television holding Courtney Cox's hand, and thinking "wow that man is hawt" before I could really articulate what that really meant to me as a girl First crush EVER, was Christover Reeves Superman, I think I was in Kindergarten and I kissed the TV. Also still love Superman even though all comic snobs hate his guts, SUPERMAN4LYFE.

They first cut it into incoherency and then remade it into inanity. The original was great when it first aired.

In 1966, probably the best western movie ever made, The Good, The Bad, and The ugly starring Clint Eastwood, The man with no name, was released. What made it great is the duel
Then in 1971, Clint Eastwood became Dirty Harry carrying a 44 Magnum and how many shots did he fire. Later in another Dirty Harry movie, he says make my day
As you can tell, I'm a fan of Clint Eastwood
