Why would the illusive man be involved? He would be long dead before they even arrived. He dedicated his life to a pro human cause. He might want to invest in a back up plan for when the Reapers succeed, even if he won't witness it himself. Yes that fits. It is the same reason I have ruled out the Shadow Broker, it would go against his character, there has to be something in it for him personally and the minute the Arks leave he would lose anything that could benefit him personally, UNLESS of course the Shadow Broker that Shepard kills is just a stand in and the real Shadow Broker was on one of the Arks. All kinds of possibilities in this and of course there is a chance that Bioware never really gave it much thought and just thought it would be an easy way to end up with useless leadership that Ryder has to deal with.

If you see that body is heavily burnt you say "Welp, it's time for DNA test", not "Since it's a woman's body and Jien was one, there is no reason for further investigation". She was identified via "biometric data" which, in this case, means something very much like a DNA confirmation. I'm on my phone so I can't pull the exact passage, but she was not identified by sight.

Good to know. I don't get why would they specifically mention the 'unrecognizable burned corpse' then, though. Obviously burning the corpse is not the right way to conceal the crime\body in ME. Why even mentioning it if it does not serve the narrative purpose? Unless the 'biometric data' WAS wrong, while being the only way to ID Jien (which points us back to the SAM\AI theory). Going to get my hands on that novel, it would be interesting to get more details and some background.

DNA tests work by comparing the sample to the computer record. So by swapping the DNA profiles of two people on the computer you can create a false-positive. The only way to have a tamper proof DNA test is if you have a direct relative on hand, which Garson does not.
Combining to that the book does not use Addisons POV makes me think that Garson murdered Addison and made the recordings to mislead. Explains why 'Addison' is the most upset about Alec being dead, she lost her last ally.

I like Addison and what we knew of Garson, so if this is true I'll hate the supposed 'victim' of this.

I found this Thread today, it got me I couldn´t stop reading and it changed the way I look on the whole game now!! (Im sorry for bad english Im an Alien so please excuse me) So please let me join in… to anticipate “The Benefactor (TB)” is SAM and here is my conclusion why: - Remember that the creation of Artificial Intelligence ALWAYS end in conflict – that’s the whole point of the ME trilogy, the only reason why the Reaper existed. Even in the End in ME3 speaking with the Child it says that soon our children will create new AI beings and the conflict starts a new. IMO THIS is what the whole ME story is related to – the evolution of AI and their relation to the biologic-life.- Even though we know about this “natural law” that will always happen and we saw what the Geth did to their creators, we the human race did only made good experience with AI, didn’t we? EDI developing more humanity than most humans in ME3, even romancing Joker! Our SAM is such a cool and helpful toy what would we do without him, we wouldn´t come far without him in Andromeda. HOW COULD THOSE CUTE AI THINGS EVER TURN AGAINST US? How would a war between real life an AI start? And exactly this story is being told now with Andromeda. - The Moment the first SAM was born (Alecs Memories 1 and 2 are important) was the moment it got ahead of all biologic-living beings, it is a singularity that is rapidly growing now, it is superior from the very beginning. It knows better than you do! - We the humans, in Person Alec Ryder, are creating a big issue here, we are building the doomsday machine (that will be build anyways due to Bio-life VS AI struggle) - The main task of SAM is to rescue Ellen Ryders life!!! Nothing else matters, only Mum!!! - This goal could NOT be achieved because of 2 reasons: 1. Alec is out of money 2. The SAM AI is NOT allowed in the milky way (for good reasons!) 3. Even if you solve first two issues you still have to face the reapers. - So Alec Ryder was DONE already while his new born AI that only sees 2 mini problems, money and laws – both not big obstacles for an AI. - Alec is about to fail, the main task of SAM won´t be achieved and SAM itself will be useless/shutdown/die. - To stop this failure the AI decides to intervene, (so far I´m not sure whether Alec was involved by SAM or whether SAM tricked us all). - SAM gather resources (we know its simple for an AI) and pushed the Initiative towards starting asap. It is mentioned that Jian isn´t even the founder at all, so depending on the time of Alecs memories 1 and 2 SAM might even have founded the Andromeda Initiative at all. So SAM is giving itself the possibility to survive and to possibly achieve ist main task to safe Mum, the meaning of its life. - After Alec dies and Sara/Scott is also about to die SAM recommends a direct link. Sara/scott awakes and Dr. Lexi describes that the link SAM and me has together is not understood correctly. Also the death of Alec Ryder is not further clarified it just says that a "direct Connection is a obvisiously a bad idea". So one could even Argument further: Jien and Alec both know about TB, both Need to die, both are killed by SAM (but for the Moment that goes too far and is far unlikely). - Why kill Jien Garson at all? Well 100k Aliens are in Andromeda now just because an AI decides that’s necessary to fulfill its purpose! The AI is superior to the whole initiative and not just a funny toy of the Pathfinder as the bio-living see it. - How would Humans, Krogans, Salarians etc. react after this got revealed? We are all here only coz a super AI that we developed tricked us. So what to do? Punish SAM? Can you punish it? Does it has rights? May you turn it off? Will you murder it when turning it off? Will the AI fight back or accept your inferior opinion? OH, the sad thing is also that Ryder might be doomed too even if he/she is not guilty. All those questions come in mind now – THIS IS HOW YOU START WARS with the AI! All in all I had a bad feeling about this SAM AI at all – I don´t want it in my head, don’t want it to control my body etc.!!! Why did Ryder never question it? Can I trust you SAM? Will you hurt me someday? Are you loyal? What if I want to shut you off, will you let me? ARE WE FRIENDS? (SAM mentiones that it is more sentient than the initiative knows. I do totally miss such possibility to speak with it. It was mentioned even by SAM that he is the FIRST AI based on Alec Ryders THEORY that AIs won´t rebel if connected with its founder. If this is true or not will be found out while the adventure in Andromeda. We already seeing that SAM is changing our body in different ways, can let us die and revive. Imagine a failure in SAMs programming, or a change in his mood. The whole game pushes you in a direction of “hey I´m your friendly AI, trust me”. Maybe our SAM is not bad but has much more to hide. Seriously this SAM is hiding way more information than it is revealed so far. Did Alec even encrypt his logs? Was Alec even able to do so anymore? If I think of changing or restrict some of SAMs data entries now I don´t think I would have the slightest chance against this machine. Are the thoughts that SAM gives me the correct ones? A part from Alec being on the Hyperion while Jiens death on the Nexus SAM could even have used Alec to slay Jien, without having Alec any memories of it. The only thing that makes me doubt this theory is I don´t get why SAM would help me finding more memories of Alec as well as why is it helping me to investigate Giens death. It might also be possible that Jien is still alive and SAM is involved somehow but does hide information from us. The pattern is clear we just need to open our eyes its posted on every piece of gear AI

I'm about 3/4 through the book and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who digs the game itself–it really fleshes out a lot of the characters. As far as the Garson murder, early on in the book there's some shadow cast on Addison, as she's clearly disappointed and surprised she wasn't next in line to take over the Initiative. But I'm not sure why folks are saying there's no Addison POV in the book–it's not as extensive as Sloane and a couple of others, but it's definitely there, in more than one chapter. She's extremely depressed about the way things turn out...she's excited when she has the idea to send out scout ships...she's even MORE depressed when the ships/missions fail. None of her POV stuff makes her a suspect, it mostly just emphasizes her depression and feelings of complete uselessness. Sheds more light on her attitude in the game.

There's also Dr. Kennedy and her husband, they use ZK Trackers which can bypass protocol, and only Addison knew about them.

Alec did not know the true identity of this 'person', and as much as he was attached to SAM - I doubt he'd love the idea of him being THAT advanced (basically, toying with his own creator and lying to him). It would be hard to accept something like that in their own head, even for Alec. Garson could be close enough and\or too nosy ( I don't think she had actually revealed him). It's just I can't put any solid logic behind the TB being human\humans (or any 'normal' species). Another theory is not much of a theory itself (it's a crazy one) but that would be... ...a ' Renegade Reaper' - Has all the benefits of an advanced AI - Knows about the Reapers coming - Is interested in preserving the species instead of wiping them out - May REMEMER about the Andromeda \ have something to do with the 'Geth space-magical telescope' - Has all the reasons to stay hidden - We've had 'heretics' among the geth already, so..why not? Or it could be the Geth. They'd have the same motivations as SAM or another AI would in not wanting to be discovered. There is the mention of the FTL Geth Telescope used by the initiative and they would have an interest in trying to establish an AI/Organic community or experimenting with AI/Biological symbiosis to prevent the misunderstanding they have experienced with the organics in the Milky Way. A real stretch but when Alec meets the Benefactor the person who gives him a coffee also says "It" will be ready soon not he, she or they. Just pure guesses ;-)

While I didn't put that much thought into it, it is a thought that crossed my mind. I would also add they follow a very similar path. Stay in the shadows hidden, and then when the job is done, kill the person leading it. I had the same theory but couldn't come up with why the Illusive Man would support the arks of the other races unless the other arks were being paid for by their own races and it was just the human ark and the Nexus where they started running out of money so the Illusive man jumped in to get it finished it. As for Cora Harper, I definately found that suspicious along with how she was suddenly pushed out of the commandos without any good explanation. I think her estranged dad pulled those strings to get her out of the Milky Way, manipulating her destiny the way Miranda's dad tried to do to her. Again, Bioware and their daddy issues. And as much as I would hate for my LI, Reyes to be involved, I highly suspect he is. Really, this Reddit theory to me makes the most sense.

I thought of that. The phrasing of that email though was about it being an uprising Sloane was starting. The book's writers (who are great) did an AMA on Reddit where they said they just got a list of characters and a few events to include, basically. Unfortunately, the studio kept them out of the loop and this is what happened. Ah, didnt know that, thanks for the heads up. Its unfortunate then. Cause reading the book made me care (or hate) even more some of the characters I already met in game. In fact, on my second playthrough (and after reading the book) i feel like i have a lot more insight about the characters and my choices will change because of it. It's a shame they didnt go the extra mile to make sure the authors of the book had everything they needed to make it a seemless transition from book to game. Still enjoyed reading it a lot. And the insight into the leadership of the Nexus was greatly appreciated. Cant wait till they give us an option in the future to space Tann. Or at the very least put him into cryo for indefinite ammount of time They didn't give us an option to space PeeBee after the stint she pulled with the escape pod. I doubt they'd let us space Tann. But dammit, I wish they would.

I really hope it turns out to be Reyes and that I get to emasculate him then throw him out of an airlock. But the novel certainly seems to wan you to think Addison might have a hand in it.

Addison seems almost like a red herring the way she is mildly implicated. Both in the book and (especially) in the game, her character is made out to be something too vague that can properly gleamed or dissected (other than that she's a depressed bureaucrat unsure of her position). An aura of "sketchiness" that the player is unable to pinpoint. It's difficult to interpret whether she is a genuine character at times. The Spender/Three Sabers/Dr. Kennedy quests are just complete red flags the game is hurling at you. It's crazy Ryder is unable to really confront Addison's incompetence other than revealing the truth of the Three Sabers plot to HNS. And Reyes is definitely a strong suspect. His whole existence in the the game is that of a manipulative, self-serving engima that you have no proper grasp of. - There is no record of his past history that can be found on the Nexus (conveniently). - Him being exiled is the greatest and easiest escape from any potential suspicion or jurisdiction imposed by anyone on the Nexus. - Him having Shadow Broker levels of finesse and connections. - An expert in espionage. - Able to functionally run an organization with no direct ties to him. - Practically lives by anonymity. Just so many qualities that would fit someone that would be hired by the Benefactor to kill somebody without anyone knowing and being able to get away with, EDIT: also he is protected by plot armor.

And...this leads to one more reason why I believe you are correct in this theory. Bioware has a precedence of throwing in an unkillable LI that ends up the "twist" in the plot and the reveal is they are the culprit, thus breaking our hearts. I was SO angry when the Anders and then again the Solas reveals tore the hearts out of my characters. I fully expect they will reveal that Reyes was the hitman that killed Jien Garson as well.

I'm sorry if this has been discussed already but how could it be Addison? When you investigate with your scanner, you see a man standing over Jien on the bed. Those scans are species accurate, as we saw on Eos with the earlier outposts, so it definitely cannot be Tann (also, he wasn't awake yet). It would have to be a male, and I'm inclined to believe it was just an agent of the Benefactor and not the actual person. Hell, maybe some SAM controlled guy, but I don't see how it could be Addison because of the scan.

The precision treshold of that scan is 82 percent

I simply don't think the margin of error on the scanner implicates Addison by any means. I need to read the novel. I stopped about 100 pages in, but I'd be really, really disappointed in Reyes if he killed Jien. I know he is capable of it, but Jien is like...the Andromeda Initiative's charismatic founder.

Not saying it's proof for Addison, but I am saying it could be a female. 82 percent gives a lot of room for not getting the gender right.

I don't think any of the Nexus leaders are involved with the Benefactor. Too much about them goes against the plan the Benefactor seems to have had by murdering Jien. Plus they already did the political leader is a traitor with Udina in the Shepard Trilogy so I think they'd avoid doing that twice in a row.

I wouldn't put it past them to recycle the plot point to be honest. Different writers.

But in the end, she knows very little. She doesn't even know who the Benefactor was. So the Benefactor had a reason to kill Garson on arrival in Andromeda, but didn't take over power. He prefered the Initiative to fall into chaos, than to have Garson in charge. Perhaps killing Garson quickly on arrival was step one of the plan. Step two might be on the Hyperion and arrived 14 months late.[/quote] That actually makes a lot of sense.

I still find it highly suspicious why Tann was put in succession above Addison and Sloane and no one realizing that switch in the order had taken place. I'm sure the benefactor had his hand in that, whether it's Tann directly or whether or not the Benefactor is someone else who put Tann in there to either be a puppet face or in order to have someone more easily manipulated.
It goes even with the cumulative SAMs being the Benefactor, they could as easily have manipulated that succession list as they could have manipulated all the electronic funds back in Milky Way to get this funded and get Sam(s) out of there and into a galaxy where there would be no limits on intelligent AI.
