Yeah I agree totally re the grappling hook and I think it was Element Zero who mentioned it felt like cheating. When I started the game I hated the combat but by the end when I had mastered it I didn't mind it so much but it did seem the complete antithesis of how an assassin would fight. Re the beer tasting notes, I did like the simple flavour of the games humour and yes the beer notes were very funny. Do you have the DLC for WW1, I really recommend it I really liked the atmosphere and the protagonist Lydia. I mean, it's not like the combat is particularly difficult. Mechanically it works quite similar to Unity, I think. It just, I don't know, feels too fast visually, kinda like switching from DA:o to DA2 back in the day.
As for the DLC, I think I do have every single DLC for the game. Got the super duper Gold edition and in some sale I even bought the only missing one "The Dreadful Crimes" because I like Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes stories and I also like the murder mysteries in Unity, so I was hoping it might be something like that (and in the same it was only 2 bucks). But yea, I should have the WW1 one, though I am not sure what it's called. Will definitely get to it after the main game is through. And then I'll finally get back to Odyssey and the DLCs for that. Have managed not to get spoiled so far, fingers crossed.
I am actually really glad that there is no AC coming out this year. After my 2+ year marathon through the entire series, I could use a break.

If you haven't done the cyclops quests and the Lost Tales of Greece (LToG) at all yet, it'll be a worthwhile amount of content to play as a whole but most of the LToG are all pretty short. Some are fun, some are a bit ordinary in my opinion. The Cyclops ones are good for loot depending on weapons you use IIRC. Are these quests part of a dlc? Or are they the live service thing the game has? I did not get the dlc. I just played the base game. I do recall that the main character is a parent in the dlc. Have to keep the bloodline flowing I guess.

Those last two are available via the Message Boards in towns. Yeah the first DLC is Tales of the First Blade and involves Alexios or Kassandra having a kid to propogate the bloodline but also explains how the Assassins first started. The second is more about the Isu and the modern day part of the game.

Did you get the DLC as part of your purchase? I'd recommend having a read through the AC Odyssey spoilers thread first before buying it, there is some divided opinion regarding it and you may not want to purchase it. Me personally I liked most of it but that's a lot because it had relevance to the over-arching First Civilisation story and the Assassins history having played all the other games. I did not get the dlc. I just played the base game. I do recall that the main character is a parent in the dlc. Have to keep the bloodline flowing I guess. Except there is no reason to keep said bloodline going. *grumble*

Or is it that I have to be hooked up to the internet so the developers can take note at what people do in their playthroughs? Essentially a "live service" game is a game designed with the sole purpose of keeping people playing for as long as possible in the hopes that those players will hopefully pay for microtransactions. The live service part is that they keep adding content after the original "complete" game is shipped. I regards to Odyssey it's the content I described above excluding the DLC but even that in a sense can be considered part of a live service game. It's designed to keep people playing longer so they buy gear stets etc to make the game remain enjoyable etc.

Still playing Syndicate: I haven't gotten much further in the story, just got the grappling hook and then started exploring the city, freeing boroughs and doing side stuff. I read a while ago (I think it was here on the forums) a comment from someone who felt that the grappling hook feels a little like cheating. I agree. It's almost too fast to get up buildings. It also makes it incredibly easy to escape if you are being detected. Arno had real trouble escaping up to the rooftops because they'd shoot him back down before he could get half way up a building. Evie on the other hand just shoots herself up in no time and is gone. I will admit though, I do appreciate the convenience of getting around very fast with that thing. Also, I already like the progression system of Syndicate better than the one from Unity. In Unity, it was just about money. Once you could affort level 5 gear, there was no point in ever getting anything lower (and it was easy to get there). So I actually never had anything level 2,3 or 4 that I didn't happen to get for free early on. Here, it's not just money but also experience points (i.e. doing missions), crafting materials (i.e. exploration and looting chests and such) and a lot of story locked items, which in combination means your progression is a lot smoother and more distributed throughout the game. It feels better and less broken. I'm not a big fan of this combat system. It feels a little frantic with all the fast jabs and punches. My impression is that their main source of inspiration was Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes movie from 2009. They fight like that, the music seems inspired by it as well and so do a lot of the costumes (though that may just be the time period). This is not a bad thing and of course, having brass knuckles and cane swords fits the scenario better than more traditional weapons but still, I don't really like the flow of it. No big deal though, I play mostly with Evie and avoid combat for the most part anyway. The stealth mechanics work pretty well. Well, that's all I can say for now. Will be back when I'm through the story, though that may be a while, Ididn't really get more than 5 hours a game time in in the last 2 weeks and I don't expect that to change soon. Cheerio fellas!
EDIT: Oh, almost forgot, love Shaun's beer tasting notes in the database. So far, he seems to hate every single one of them for different reasons. It's hilarious. Cheating? Then don't use it I wanted that grapple since Revelations and will abuse it every time I can! Now I need to play Syndicate again! Downloaded Crysis 3, but am not in a hurry
As for Syndicate's combat, it's easy and boils down to "counter and win", but I appreciated that they gave different move sets and finishers for Jacob and Evie. I prefer the Evie ones as they are usually graceful while Jacob has the more appropriate to him brutal combos.
When it boils down to how assassins fight - in every game they do open combat according to the era. Syndicate is hardly an antithesis. I would even argue that in Syndicate you have some of the best tools to be an assassin and avoid open combat. Smoke and voltaic bombs are great to give you a classic ninja vanish, especially with the grappling hook. You have knives, darts, henchmen, environment hazards. You can clear an area without even getting close to anyone. Evie is an absolute stealth nightmare for any enemy - cloak of invisibility, extra knives and bigger knife damage. Or just call the Rooks and send them to fight while you play the innocent bystander A quest wants you to quietly grab an item in a heavily guarded police area? Well, you can scout the policemen routes, plan ahead and sneak step by step to your objective...or just send a big Rook force to fight the police while you waltz in from the other side in a police free zone. The game is way better if you try to mix things up with all the tools you have instead of trying the old formula from previous titles - stealth sneak and fight when spotted. You can, of course, but where is the fun in that?

So what's the live service thing that the game has? Or is live service just another way to say patches/dlc? I have no idea. Or is it that I have to be hooked up to the internet so the developers can take note at what people do in their playthroughs? You can play the game offline. But then you don't have access to the Orichalcum currency (via daily/weekly quests and gathering spots in the world). You use Orichalcum to buy special gear or gamble for it at the merchant Oikos (offerings change every week). Oikos often sells pieces of gear sets and other items that are in the packs from the Ubisoft store. So far I don't think there is a whole armor set that you could assemble from Oikos alone. The idea is if you like the look/stats of the armor piece from Oikos, then you might be tempted to buy the whole pack from the store.
And throughout the year the game offered new quests and stories in the form of the free "Lost tales of Greece", two paid DLC's (each released in 3 parts, one part per month), along with patches that increased the level cap, added new abilities, stat page, armor transmog, mastery levels, etc. All of that is meant to keep the content changing/evolving, offer different things to different players and try to keep as many people engaged/coming back for as long as possible in order to increase the odds of someone buying stuff from the store.
Side note - this model is actually also a mild form of antipiracy. Since the game uses two DRM protections it's a bit of a chore to crack each update all over again. Right now there is a pirated copy of the game, but it is with content from about a month after launch, which means a level cap of 50, no transmog, no Oikos, no new quests, no mastery system, no bug fixes, etc., essentially being an offline launch version. A friend of mine played the pirated copy and claimed he will wait for the final release of all content (which should be next month maybe, a year after the game launched) when the scene groups will bother to work on a crack one final time...but I kept bragging how awesome the new stuff is, how the new lvl 70 builds (back then) and mastery levels change everything, how Kass can get a Wonder woman look in every armor, etc., etc. "> In the end he bought the game during a sale, tired of waiting.

I am not saying I didn't like the grappling hook but it just made it so much easier it felt like "cheating" Good take on the combat, I hadn't really thought it through that much. Glad you are going to give Crysis 3 a go, it copped a lot of stick but I really felt that some of the maps were really challenging and made you play in a different way and that the bow was great. I also thought the story was good and I loved Psycho's re-introduction and how well his character was acted out and his dialogue. Yes it's mostly the same old enemies etc. but the situations are different and you get to have some fun in vehicles and playing as Prophet was pretty good from a story perspective with his interactions with some of the NPC's including Psycho. I managed to play this on Post Human Warrior or whatever the hardest setting is and man it was one of the toughest things I have done game wise. There is one map you play at night time in Old China Town which is flooded and it's great but the last part is one of the only maps in a game I have just sprinted through to get to a check point it was so damn hard. But that may be an indictment on my ability!!!!

Funny thing I forgot to mention - got new speakers recently (Harman Kardon Soundsticks Wireless). I had a piece of cloth/rug on the top of the subwoofer in order to prevent some dust buildup. That piece of cloth could not stay on and kept being thrown away (scaring the crap out of me a couple of times) by the bass waves vibration during the entire Crysis 1 playthrough Even at 20 % strength the bass was pretty powerful and just about every sound in the game used it constantly. Didn't have that "issue" with Crysis 2 even at 50 % bass (it really makes the levels with heartbeat sequences tense though). So I really don't know how they changed the sound model between the two games, but while it definitely was overused in Crysis 1, the bass in Crysis 2 emphasized the gameplay better. I guess "less is more" in this case. On 100% bass strength I could feel Crysis 1 nonstop shaking the walls Talk about feeling the battlefield around you
While I never paid much attention to the subwoofer during play, I think those two games are the best to show me it's effects in gaming (for music it's obvious). Mind you, I avoid horror games (Dead space 1 is installed and waiting though) where I hear the bass is used to really give you a sudden heart attack.

Ha that's funny because I was walking round the house yesterday humming music from Crysis 2 and yeah I agree the sound is really good in both games. I have noticed it more this PT of both games (1 and 2) as I have made an effort to have the sound louder than I normally do (thanks to Odyssey actually) and yeah its used to good effect to enhance the atmosphere. The BASS on the new speakers I got after my last ones died is not as good, I miss it terribly!!!! These ones aren't bad but it took a lot of fiddling with help from my son is who is quite experienced with sound for performances to get it anywhere near "Good" whereas my last set were GREAT!!!! There is one battle in ME3 where you attack a Cerberus force entrenched on Tuchanka leading up to where the bomb is and that always stood out for me in terms of explosive effects and feeling like the real thing. As Shepard fights his way forward there are just explosions going off everywhere and I was using the Revenant which sounds great in ME3.

Do you have the DLC for WW1, I really recommend it I really liked the atmosphere and the protagonist Lydia. It was "sort of" me. I didn't so much feel like it was cheating. I felt like it gutted the soul of the series. After Unity's incredible parkour, I had high hopes for Syndicate. Instead of an aerial ballet in Victorian London, we got heavy-footed roof-stomping with training wheels. Worse, they made the streets artificially wide to accommodate their traffic system. The streets had to be so wide that they were forced to invent the rope launcher. When you have to remove an iconic, core gameplay feature in order to accommodate a background system, it's not ever likely to be worthwhile. Carriages were okay. The terrible parkour was not, nor was that crazy rope launcher. It can't even work as presented. It would require infinite segments of rope and anchors. Maybe if it had been a limited use tool I'd have been able to tolerate it better. Meh. Syndicate had good protagonists. Greeney was great. The Templars had a reasonsble plan. The story was fun. There were cool tie-ins with past games and lore. The side content was sometimes well done. If they hadn't ripped the soul from the game by destroying the gameplay, I probably would have really liked it. Instead, I completed it, got my platinum trophy, and couldn't bring myself to complete it again. The WW1 segment was solid, gameplay gripes aside. I hated the Jack the Ripper DLC. It was terribly unappealing for me, and had even worse gameplay.

So what's the live service thing that the game has? Or is live service just another way to say patches/dlc? I have no idea. Or is it that I have to be hooked up to the internet so the developers can take note at what people do in their playthroughs? I'll list the live service stuff for you. It's content that only appears when you're connected to their servers. It doesn't cost anything. It's offered free of cost to keep you engaged. It also provides a way to earn orichalcum, Odyssey's microtransaction currency. They let you earn a little in hopes that you'll drop real cash to round out your collections. Anyway, here we go: * Weekly bounties and challenges: There is a special bounty each week that offers orichalcum (Odyssey microtransaction currency) in addition to the usual drachmae and gear drops. These bounties rotate weekly between "kill this mercenary" and "sink this ship". These ships drop unique cosmetics for Adrestia. The roster of vessels eventually repeats, so everyone eventually gets a shot at each cosmetic. * Weekly Challenges: These happen each week, and are a separate thing from the bounties. They're typically along these lines-- "kill 10 of X, 10 of Y, and 3 of Z" to earn a big payout and some orichalcum. The newer challenges mix it up by adding nuance such as "kill 10 hoplites with poison" or "kill 15 bandits with a torch while poisoned". Some of these are easy to complete simply by playing the story. Others, like killing with the torch, require attention but aren't a big deal. Ultimately, getting the orichalcum does let you nab some cool UbiStore items without ever spending real cash. * The Lost Tales of Greece: These are additional, complex series of quests that simply add to the game. I say complex meaning that each LToG is a series of quests, rather than a single, quick job. Most are pretty solid. A few are good. They're free, which is nice. I think that pretty much covers it, unless I'm having a braindead moment. There are paid DLC expansions, but you already know what those are. They are not part of the live service stuff, and can be played offline like any other DLC expansion.

- Possible VA for the next (Vikings-based) AC game. From reddit: Posted byu/ContentDispenserPretty sure the Viking setting for the next game is confirmed. Ashraf and Darby McDevitt just followed this Danish actor pretty much at the same time. Also he just happens to be in Montreal for "a few meetings" lol.. Magnus Bruun @magnusbruun5Just arrived in Montreal, Canada. 🇨🇦 I have a few days of meetings in this wonderful city preparing for a new project coming up later this year.🤘

I looked up Magnus Bruun to determine whether I was familiar with his work. I watched him in The Last Kingdom. He was charismatic on screen, despite playing a less than likable character. He is a Dane and convincingly played a Dane, so I think he could really nail this role. 😉
I can't remember the last time the upcoming AC game wasn't correctly leaked well in advance. More than once over the years it has seemed a calculated move by Ubisoft.

If they face scan and mocap him, he should leave the sunglasses on. It would be hilarious.
I am totally down with a Viking AC btw. Complete deviation in style and atmosphere from the last two but would work with basically the same mechanics (from combat to the ship and everything). Could be pretty epic!
In other news, I am still playing Syndicate and have finally reached the state of flow that I tend to get into with every AC game eventually. I am zipping through the streets of London collecting collectables (found the ONE beer that Shaun approves of ), kicking templars out of districts and barely doing any missions (still in sequence 4). Good times!
The zipline does make everything so easy though. Compared to Unity, this is a cake walk.
Mostly playing Evie in free play because she has more useful skills atm for that (like lock picking and such, currently I'm level 7), while Jacob is completely focused on combat skills (I use him mostly for the gang wars when it's time to free a borough). Also, I just find her so much more likable than Jacob. She is charming and has some intellectual curiosity next to her wit, while Jacob's flippant arrogance is something I just cannot stand.
Oh, also I did some of the murder mysteries of the Arthur Conan Doyle DLC. Love those so far. They are a bit more varied and intricate than the ones in Unity. In the last one I had to track bullet trajectories and such. Really nicely done. I certainly don't regret paying an extra couple of bucks (and I think it really was just $2 or 3 in some sale) for this.

ROFL re the sunglasses!!!!! Same I played Evie all the time except for when you had to play Jacob.

The latest LToG is up - Socrates's Trial. Um... oddly enough, I didn't see any announcement for it though.

I am sure a mod with glasses will be available pretty soon after the game launches
I am also currently doing little bits of Syndicate every few days. Freed all of London (again), did most of the side quests up until Sequence 7 and am enjoying ziplining on the roofs. I have a free month of Uplay+ though, so I think I will dive into some titles I never got around to looking at - like Farcry, HOMM sequels, Anno, maybe even Division. Any other suggestions?

Yep, same here. I wanted to look into Far Cry 5 and especially it's DLCs, to see if they are for me or not. I'm sure I'll just buy the main game eventually anyway because it's less than $20 quite often anyway but the Gold Editions are always so expensive that this is a good opportunity to see if I even need it in this case.
Everything else I am interested in from Ubi, I already got and I like to buy my games individually anyway, so that subscription isn't for me. But it's nice to have the free month for testing like this.
