I'm not thrilled about the series' direction overall, but I do like the addition of choices and romantic subplots. I love your avatar!!!!!! Yeah I wasn't at first but the more I have seen the more I am looking forward to it. AC used to be a game I liked playing and I just got carried along by the story with minimal thinking etc required but it will be interesting to play it as a full RPG. And isn't it weird that as Bioware move away from RPG's to Anthem that AC is doing the opposite!!!!

To me, the core of AC gameplay has always been parkour and stealth. I was really glad when Syndicate took us back to a dense city environment, and then I was annoyed when Origin gave us this enormous fuck-off desert, with very little verticality or anything. Also, I don't see how it can keep being "Assassin's Creed" if they keep taking us further and further back in the past. Odyssey is set literally hundreds of years before Origin happened, so it's not really about the Assassin order OR their creed. Lol.

Yeah I agree re the big open environments and I hadn't thought about it but yeah it was something I didn't overly enjoy. Even in AC3 and Black Flag there were still lots of parkour and things to climb even though a lot was set in "natural" environments. That's a good point re it being AC or not. I got into AC because of the overarching First Civilisation stuff and hated how they have completely dumbed that down. I am keen to see how they manage that in Odyssey and how they make it relevant to the whole future gameplay and Animus parts of the game. I am not sure but there are lots of smart people on these boards and hopefully they'll figure it out.

I still wish they would innovate more and quit reusing so many design elements. That said, from what I've read it's sounding more ambitious than Origins in a number of ways. And I love Cassandra's character design and VOs.

pessimistpanda I think the reason they've gone back before the brotherhood is because they are touching on first civ stuff. I'll put this in spoilers in case you don't want to know, but it's there for those who do: Your main weapon is a spear, not a hidden blade. Whether the player decides to be Alexios or Kassandra, they’re playing as the child of Leonidas and wielding his spear. In the lore of the series, Leonidas is said to have First Civilization DNA. His spear, rather than a hidden blade, is the game’s signature weapon. It is a First Civ artifact and possesses a seemingly otherworldly power. The gist of the ancient Greek storyline is that your family line is prophesied to bring doom to Sparta, which somehow leads to you getting thrown off a mountain, then surviving and resurfacing 17 years later as a mercenary who gets the chance to discover a conspiracy against your family. Revenge for attacks on one’s family is an AC tradition. Just ask Ezio and Bayek. From here: Kotaku ArticleI was a little concerned about them getting away from the directed story stuff, but it seems it actually is still, kinda. It's also explained better in that article than I can do. I'm optimistic for it, keeping my fingers crossed that I'll still love AC and will probably pre-order it.

Well, if we learn more about the 1st civ, and the modern-day plot starts to actually GO somewhere, that will be nice. Ever since they bumped off Desmond for no freaking reason, it's just been floundering, with every subsequent game revealing a new massive plot twist, only to then do nothing with it.

I like the Spartan kick. I will be using that move a lot in combat. I also like the sound effect when its used.

I'd love to read the article but they won't let me unless I turn off my ad blocker. I don't turn off my ad blocker for anyone. Can someone be a sweety and copy it here so I can read it? An Assassin’s Creed game that features multiple historic timelines in one game is likely with the introduction of next-gen consoles and technology.
According to Ubisoft EVP Lionel Raynaud, one game with a number of different historic timelines that the player can travel between would be possible as singular finite games give way to live services that update a game post-release.
Games like Far Cry or Watch Dogs could take place in multiple cities and countries too, according to Raynaud.
“We would be able to – in the same world – have several historical periods, for instance, in Assassin’s Creed, and use the Animus to travel from one to the other,” he told the Ubi Blog.
“Or have different areas of the world linked by travel systems, so that a Far Cry game or a Watch Dogs game could happen in different countries in the same experience, seamlessly.”
The line between a singular game that stops after reaching a conclusion, and a game that is constantly updated with new content blurs every year, according to the Ubisoft exec.
“This line gets fuzzier every year. We have bigger post-launch periods, longer lives for each of our games. Even the ones that used to be solo-oriented games, like action adventures, they now have a very strong post-launch, and people are staying in our worlds for a long time. So this line is absolutely fuzzier and fuzzier,” he said.
“We all see a future where a game will stay [post-launch], and new experiences will come in the games. But we will have technology that will break the [current] limits of memory, for instance, because of new technologies that are arriving.”

Previous Assassin’s Creed games have been related using the same characters – Assassin’s Creed 2, Brotherhood and Revelations are part of the Ezio trilogy.
And last year’s Assassin’s Creed: Origins featured elements of Greek history ahead of the Ancient Greece setting chose for this year’s Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey – as well as the Greek colony Cyrene, main hero Bayek’s wife is half Greek.
Ubisoft has already touched on expanding and interlinking these games creatively, then. It just now needs the next-gen technology to catch up with its ideas. And then we’re not far off the idea that Ubisoft games are all in a shared universe, are we?
“Creatively, how does Ubisoft decide how long to keep creating new content for a live game after launch, as opposed to moving on to a sequel? Where does that line get drawn?” he said.
Here ya go let me know if this isn' the one you wanted.

Female protag is always an interest point but I'll wait for actual gameplay viewing on Twitch before deciding. I can't say I'm impressed with the cutscene in one of the posted vids; the chars looked rather stiff and the horse a comedy in the background. I'm not crazy for big maps with "hundreds" of ??? They just made me feel harassed; it's like looking at a pile of paperwork on the desk.

So AC Liberation is out on Xbox One. A game I very much enjoy, so time for another run. Well I hope it better on console than PC. I like aspects of this game but it is the only game that has made me break something in rage whilst playing. Controls on PC meant it was nigh on impossible to execute some required jumps etc to 100% completion in some missions..... I don't even want to think about it Oh OK I will think about it a bit more. It was fun to play as Aveline, some of the combat/gameplay was frustrating and annoying and some of the stealth stuff was worse than AC3 and 4 together. The story was ok but ..... yeah.

I play on PC also and I couldn't finish it, just too frustrating. It was my first experience in any game of complete exacerbation when trying to achieve something. The older games like Neverwinter and Icewind could be terribly frustrating at times but you knew that you'd eventually find the way to win a battle or whatever but Liberation, it was just impossible to complete some very simple things on PC. The one that got me was trying to get 100% on some river mission. All I had to do was jump diagonally to a wharf and it just could not be done (by me) even after like 20 attempts to get 100% for the mission. Seriously we are talking about one jump from a moving boat, when I think of the complex stuff I have done in other AC games it should not have even been something I had to think about.

I haven't pre-ordered yet. I can't make up my mind whether to get gold or gold deluxe for the season pass. Thanks for sharing that video themikefest !
P.S. I think you can turn the ? off in the options so you don't have to see them. For AC and TW3.

I wish I had more energy to put my thoughts into words regarding Odyssey. I'm just too wiped, at the moment, to build a coherent list of interests and concerns.
I guess the short, simple version is that AC is heading in a direction I don't like. I play AC for historical tourism. I don't like seeing ham-fisted roleplaying, magic weapons, microtransactions and "300 Spartan Kicks" in AC. The features that slowly sapped my initial enthusiasm for Origins appear to be even more abundant in Odyssey. I'm sure it will be a pretty game with a good soundtrack. I will most likely play it. I suspect it will be my final AC, though, unless it's shockingly good. I just hate the introduction of talent trees; leveled foes; awkward RP and the like. I see a ton of personal red flags in this game. It seems to be an AC that throws out most of what I liked about the series.

I agree Element Zero since Syndicate the focus has seemed to be on improving the combat but for me that is not why I play the game, in fact the exact opposite is the case. I play AC games to kill every person by stealth (one arrow shot, hidden blades from above or via blending or knocking guards unconscious from hiding), not by filling adrenaline bars and executing finishing moves. The old combat was I thought simple and elegant and reflected how a skilled assassin would fight, you were never an over bearing, brute melee specialist or some flashy archer doing back flips etc. because that is not what an AC protagonist was about. "We strike from the shadows to protect the light". I was OK with the tricks in Syndicate but the changes to Origins in terms of combat were just rubbish and for me as an older gamer too complex on PC and mostly useless because at least 75% or more of my kills were by stealth. And yes the fantasy weapons etc were gaudy and immersion breaking and some were thoroughly ridiculous. I am sure I am a minority in these views but like you the games were more about the history of the era and the integration of the Assassins/Templars story into that. Anyway, with Odyssey I am still excited in the hope that it is executed well in terms of its RPG elements and hopefully good story and I will just suffer the ignominy of sucking at the combat

There's a female playable protag right? Will have to see the finalise gameplay. Even if it's good, the 'paperwork' is going to be a downer. dazk, same sentiments here. I love to sneak around and stealth kill. Reason why I'm never tired of Dishonored II and the reboot Tomb Raider series. I've fond memories of the old AC.
