Just watched a spoiler free review - "A thin line that separates this from the Witcher 3...." I like AC Odyssey but why the comparisson with Witcher 3 by reviewers is a bit beyond me. Even borrowing some concepts it isn't in the same leaque. I am not even shure CDPR can best their own work in the next game they produce.
For me Witcher 3 is still unique.

At present, I'm only getting to play games at night, so I just pulled an all-nighter with Odyssey. My experience is improving for three predictable reasons. First, I've simply gotten used to some of the things that annoy me. This doesn't mean I think they're okay, or that my opinion has changed. I've simply learned not to let them annoy me as much. Second, I've reached level 23. Somewhere in the late teens the good powers come online. I respecced around level 18 and my experience completely transformed. Overpower attacks, which were such a big part of Origins, are great in Odyssey. Sadly, you can't access them until some substantial leveling has been done. The combat gameplay does eventually improve. It just takes a lot of investment to get it up to par. Third, I've leveled up, as discussed above. This means I have have way better gear, which makes an huge difference. I also got to respec, as mentioned. The skill tree is in fact not a tree, but an assortment of mostly independent skills. Upon reaching higher levels, you can ditch the useless skills you don't like in favor of better stuff. In the early going, I sometimes didn't know where to put my skills, since nothing available was appealing. It gave me a chance to experiment, I guess, but it wasn't needed. I knew what I wanted and simply had to wait. As Kaidan Fan mentioned, archery initially sucks. Then, in the mid-teens, gear and skills come together to suddenly make it godly. It's so good that one could go nearly straight archer with no issue. Of course, melee is likewise great. I presently have a balanced build that's strong in melee; has great baseline archery damage, but few fancy trick-shots; and high damage Assassination strikes, including a ranged-teleport assassination. The game us freaking huge. I've completed "Episode 3", and have done 100% of the side content along the way. I can definitely see his burnout could be an issue. Fortunately, I think one can easily hit max level without being a completionist. The game is at its best when I pursue the critical path and obvious/linked side quests. Random wandering is a bit counter-productive, or at least unnecessary, as the game eventually leads you to most locations eventually. I'm playing on PS4 Pro and gave had some performance issues. I've had a full crash, and several times the game has locked up while riding a horse. While it looks solid, it doesn't look close to as clean and pretty as Origins. It's a bit disappointing, just as Syndicate felt like a (huge) step backward graphically after Unity. (This Syndicate team us definitely Ubi's minor league team. I wish Ashraf's group could do all of the games.) The story is pretty good, and the writing reasonably solid. I think I will end up really liking the story. As advertised, there's a three part narrative that interweaves family, the Peloponnesian War and Isu stuff. The game has its cheesy moments of dialogue, but it's not too bad in general. The romance stuff is mostly ridiculous, as expected, but at least it makes me laugh.

So yea, fun times with the game so far. When I got it 2 days ago, it would always crash when starting a new game and my computer would just restart. After trying a shitload of things (reinstall to different drives, turning all sorts of crap on my system on and off, etc. one of the Ubisoft support guys suggested it be some of the components on my mainboard that caused the issue. So I went into the BIOS and deactivated a bunch of them with no luck. Then I though, hell, let's do a BIOS update iif it really is a mainboard issue. Flashed the BIOS, updaetd and BAM, Windows would no longer boot, not even in safe mode (with a flash drive). Took me 2 days to figure out that it was my monitor setuo (of all things) that caused this. I am running a 2 Monitor setup on a gtx970 and for some reason, my mainboard didn't like that anymore after the BIOS update (still not sure why actually). With a different configuration, my system booted again yesterday and I started up Odyssey, actually not expecting much but what do you know, after changing my monitor setup, the game runs like a charm (well, it still randomly crashes quite a bit but it does run). Why the heck would a second monitor cause such pain? The weird thing is, I had even tried borderless and windowed mode before as well but that didn't do anything. Anyway, I only had time to play for about an hour so far because of all this trouble. So far I like a few things and dislike a few others: - I like the exploration mode. The less markers the better, I say. You just pay more attentiion to that beautiful world around you and don't just follow little symbols on the minimap or something. Good going there Ubisoft. - Like the setting and characters so far (playing Cassandra). Only thing is that the accents are a bit wonky at times. I mean, I am used to wonky accents in AC games, they are traditional but they are overdoing it a bit in this one, don't they? - I like Cassandra's roguish attitude. Reminds me a little of Hawke in DA2. - Don't like that they don't continue the present day story from where Origin left us. Come on, we were about to leave for Alexandria to find the apple with Bill, now we are in some other random place, doing random shit with a random lady that we've never seen before? Even if this will get explained and connected later on (and I REAALLY hope it will), it still is a shitty way to tell the story IMO. ALso, the reason for the character selection is stupid. If there are two sets of DNA on the spear, why would they be of two variations of the same story? They should be of two people doing different things (like it was in Origins with Bayek and Aya/Amunet. I'd have gone with a degraded genetic sample, where the Animus has to simulate some stuff to ill in the gaps and you can choose between two probabilistic models or something. Ah well, not that relevant to the actual game maybe but I like the present day aspect of the AC storylines and I feel like Ubi has been screwing us over on that one ever since AC3. I was hoping things would start to get better (Layla had some potential in Origin IMO) but so far, it doesn't look very promising. Ok, I guess it's still too early to say anything for certain though. I'll just keep at it and get back to you with more valuable insights.

For those who have played Origins and are currently playing odyssey. If you had to choose between the two, which one would it be? Just curious since I will get one of them tomorrow when the store opens. Really hard for me to say. The games are quite similar in many aspects. Origins is a solid game and I really like the Egyptian setting. At some point though the desert got on my nerves and I was grateful for anything green. Visually I enjoy Odyssey more. Much more colors and no desert 😀 I like the protagonists more and so far feel more invested in the story. I barely recall the details of the Origins story outside the initial revenge plot. I missed the Origins combat at first, but now with more levels and more abilities to mix and match I think Odyssey has more variety combat wise. Still, Origins had a combat feel that is missing from Odyssey. Odyssey wins for me in the RP department because it has way more ways to define your character. Overall I guess I vote for Odyssey, but it could be just because it's the new thing. No matter which you pick first you will miss something from one of the games while you play the other.

Just bought Odyssey. Can someone explain what the Blind King bonus mission is that came with the game? No idea to be honest. I haven't found it yet. But by the looks of it it's an extra quest. How big of a quest though, who knows. I stumbled on an innocent looking optional side quest that took me over 3 hours to finish - I ran all around two islands and the quest ended up in a full out battle between town militia and bandits all the way from the dock, up the town streets and to the Achilles temple on the hilltop. And I am really mad at how I resolved a certain part of that quest line. Trying to achieve the best outcome usually ends in the worst one is all I am saying.

Element Zero , outta curiosity what difficulty are playing on? That might be a factor. Hard, then Normal. I usually play every game on Nightmare/Insanity/Whatnot. The early game combat in Odyssey is a bit too grindy. Add to it that this is my first PT, and I end up annoyed. It's gotten much better once I unlocked the higher tier skills and equipment. For those who have played Origins and are currently playing odyssey. If you had to choose between the two, which one would it be? Just curious since I will get one of them tomorrow when the store opens. Origins, no doubt. I'm likely too late, since you posted this yesterday. So far, Origins is hands down a better game. Odyssey is okay, but it's full of unnecessary bloat, even by AC standards. I also strongly prefer Origins' gameplay and protagonist. Aleksios isn't bad, and seems to have a very special story ahead, but Bayek was better. Agreed. I was decepcioned when I noticed that they are randomly generated. I though that we were able to collect them. I had three on me, while on a fort location. I had a memorable gaming moment like this yesterday. I was infiltrating a strong fort with the regional leader and all of his cronies inside. Eventually, since it's not (yet?) possible to one-shot assassinate bosses of my level, fighting ensued. I was getting mobbed by higher leveled troops, but holding my own. Then the bounty hunters started arriving. First it was two of them plus the fort officers. I was struggling a bit due to fire attacks, but hanging in okay. A third, higher leveled BH arrived and I ran across the fort, breaking line of sight. I noticed that there were about a dozen prisoners, and I freed them as a distraction. I was happy to learn that they weren't peasants but warriors. They armed themselves and attacked the garrison. This allowed me to fight the BHs only. I ended up killing 5 mercenary bounty hunters in total, along with everyone else in the fort. I leveled up twice in that fort, and acquired some decent gear. It was definitely the best fight I've had. I just left another region with some unfinished bounties I was working. Three mercs have decided to loiter inside a strong fort. I have no desire to fight all three of them plus the Athenians whom I just put in power. If they'd come out of the fort, I'd gladly fight them. Oh, well.

Just bought Odyssey. Can someone explain what the Blind King bonus mission is that came with the game? Alas, I arrived too late. I hope you enjoy Odyssey, at any rate. TBK is just an extra series of quests included in the game via that DLC. You'll encounter the NPC in question fairly early in the game. He's in the first region you visit beyond your home. His quest is fairly long and somewhat passive. I expect it will take a very long time to accomplish all that I agreed to do.

Enjoy, the game is huge............ Yep, I just reached a WTF moment at the end of chapter 3 (actually there was one of those at the end of chapter 2). And the game just got a ton bigger... I've completed 9% of the regions apparently and my playthrough time is: 24.5 hours. I think this is going to be my favorite game of 2018 (so far) and I've played God of War and Spiderman. Red Dead Redemption 2 can wait...

Just bought Odyssey. Can someone explain what the Blind King bonus mission is that came with the game? Where are you in the game, you meet a blind NPC in Megaris called Ataxerxes who you can talk to and then come back and tell him about certain things (like the Zeus lightning statue in Kephallonia) all over Greece to get rewards. I am 100% guessing but I am assuming that he has something to do with it as he is blind and because of his name.

Even if this will get explained and connected later on (and I REAALLY hope it will), it still is a shitty way to tell the story IMO. The discontinuity seems to have bugged a lot of people.
You'd think if they weren't going to continue on that story, they'd at least give us a token mention of Layla having been in Alexandria (to indicate there's been a timeskip) or that Bill decided to head to Alexandria alone when Layla found a promising lead on the Spear of Leonidas.
The opening scene also could have been better, maybe show exactly where Layla found the Spear and the book? The way it looks in-game is like she found them under some rocks in the middle of a field... conditions that I don't think would allow the book to survive two millennia in-situ without disintegrating. Would it have been too much to have it shown she found them inside of a statue instead?
(I know it's a minor nitpick, but does the game ever explain this?)

Only nitpick I have really so far is wolves need to not wander into populated zones. I think I've had a few npcs I was on my way to talk to get murdered and breaks the quest. Also its hilarious when I'm fighting a merc around people and I dont hit them yet they aggro to me fighting and start trying to punch me or grap a nearby weapon and assault me, rude
