Ryder grows as the story progresses. He/she was thrown into a position of leadership when the current pathfinder passed. In the beginning, Ryder is very green, but by the end of the story, Ryder is a strong leader with a loyal team. People need to get used to the fact that Ryder isn't the stoic, experienced, military person that Shepard was. Ryder is more relate-able the the "average Joe" and he/she rises to the occasion when he/she needs to. I actually see no rise for Ryder at all. One hour into the game you're already a killing machine capable of wiping out entire Keth bases and the only person actively doing stuff to advance the Ai. Although I felt restricted a lot of times when it came to Ryder's character, it was never because of inexperience or lack of military training. This, for me at least, did cause a bit of a disconnect from the character they were trying to give us. Gameplay wise Ryder is like Shep on steroids. Ryder can be all things at once, a master soldier, a deadly biotic, and a genius tech expert. The open class system just doesn't mesh with the story of a greenhorn trying to find their way. A class system with limited power selections would have fit much better. I'm not sure how you solve the issue of just mowing down legions of enemies in a game like this though. I agree that single handedly destroying entire Kett bases that the Resistance has been fighting for years without success just throws that whole feeling of being a shiny newbie out the window. The game would have had to rely less on combat and more on dialogue, puzzles, exploration or some other mechanic. While I might have enjoyed that I don't see BW willing to do that since they want that shooter crowd so badly. The character and the story just doesn't mesh with the gameplay well at all in this instance.

I also don't really see how Revan is a great character. He/She had a fantastic plot twist. One of the best-written backstories of all time. But the character in game was very hollow. Nothing like Shep at all. I felt anyway. I'm sure others will disagree, but while I love the crap out of KOTOR, I never saw Revan as being that interesting of a person to play. Just that one big plot twist. from an external perspective Revan is one of my favorite characters from SWs/ the EU. Along with Luke Obi Wan....and fuck it too many to name.

*look in utter shock You do know ME as a series is just a giant fan tribute to Star trek? Aparantly not. In the sci-fi world, there are two types of shows basically. The space opera type filled with action and such and not much explanation on the technology and human focus; then there is the Star Trek type filled with lots of talking and dialogue and Tech speak. ME falls into the tech speak and more focus on humanity side. AKa Star Trek side.

My problem with Ryder is that he came off as a greenhorn and not in control to me (unlike Shepard.) Obviously this fits the story. And he felt too casual and overly-optimistic for my tastes. That's how they wrote his character, so it's nothing against Tom's performance. And the stakes were much lower than in the OT, so it takes some adjusting to. There was a major tonal shift from the OT and I didn't think the characters were that awesome in ME1 - i liked the new universe and races, and the story, but it took till ME2 for them to be fleshed out and got me more interested.
Shep started as a seasoned veteran in ME1 and I liked the feeling of being in control he gave me. Ryder will probably get there, but not in this game - for me. I don't know how SisRyder sounded, but I assume most of this is true for her.
I'm more disappointed in the lackluster story and other characters, than I was in Ryder himself.

There's realistically no way for Ryder to be more memorable than a character that's been around since 2007. At the end, Ryder is still a doormat and will forever be a doormat until they bring the old dialogue system back. Ryder can't be much else except different shades of paragon with the current system. Riiight...because not being an asshole automatically makes you a doormat... Really intelligent and mature perspective you have.

True, but the Reaper threat wasn't almost realized till the third game in the OT, here the face of annihilation was in the first game in Andromeda. I didn't care enough about the new squad, race or circumstances to have annihilation matter to me yet.

I didn't care enough about the new squad or races to have annihilation matter to me yet. That's not true. The actual reaper war happens in ME3, but total annihilation was imminent at the end of ME1, since Sovereign was about to open the Citadel relay and let the reaper fleet pour through. And then it happens again in ME2 Arrival when Shepard has to delay the reapers one more time.
