NPD Top 10 Games For March 1. Ghost Recon Wildlands 2. The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 3. Mass Effect: Andromeda 4. Horizon Zero Dawn 5. MLB The Show 17 6. Grand Theft Auto V 7. For Honor 8. NBA 2K17 9. Nier: Automata 10. Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare March was also a big month for Nintendo's Switch, which is Nintendo's biggest hardware launch ever and the second biggest launch for any video game platform since 1995. ------ What we can take away from these numbers is bad press and a stumbling out of the gate hurt MEA's profitability significantly. Not only did it lose out to Ubisoft's Wildlands, which got a lower overall metacritic score than MEA, but MEA also lost out to Breath of the Wild, which sold most of its copies on a brand new console that has been in short supply since it released. I'm sure BioWare is likely feeling the pressure and EA can't be happy with these results either. www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2017/04/20/npd-wildlands-rises-to-the-top-nintendo-breaks-hardware-records.aspx

As pessimistic as I am with Andromeda's current state, I'm pretty sure EA made their money. I'm also pretty confident that EA will only use this kind of leverage to justify cutting budgets even further and laying off more people to keep maximizing returns. Honestly, EA doesn't care if Bioware succeeds or fails. The value of the IP is what draws in investors. When the IPs begin to fade, you know what will happen next. I hope Bioware succeeds despite the F***ING HORRIBLE LEADERSHIP DECISIONS, REPUTATION-KILLING HIRES, NON-EXISTANT HR (Read Glassdoor and other sites that former Bioware employees wrote about, especially 2004-7), PR IDIOCY FOR NOT RECOGNIZING THAT THE FORUMS HELPED BIOWARE and TOTALLY EXPECTING RAINBOWS when the release was F***ing insulting garbage.
So yeah... good luck Bioware. I love you and fear for ya. Hang in there and pour some soul and passion into the franchises or you're never going to get hired anywhere except on the cheap.

It's probably going to sell less than Wildlands no matter how you look at it, but it's still worth noting Andromeda was released two weeks later and so only had half the time to rack up sales.

Maybe I am wrong, those sales are for just march 2017? If that is so, of course mass effect andromeda would have sold less than breath of the wild, it was not available until 21 march.
Of course zelda is going to sell more because its been available from march 3, while andromeda only had one weeks of sales for march 2017.

How the hell is GTA 5 still selling like crazy 3 1/2 years after it came out? I don't know, but I'm strongly guessing that the modding community like Fallout 4 and Skyrim keep the game fresh and in the player's hands. The conversation keeps going long after the development cycle because you can now do this with this mod or that mod. Word of mouth gets around and it still matters despite what others think.

I'm sure BioWare is likely feeling the pressure and EA can't be happy with these results either. I dunno about that. I would imagine those numbers don't include Origin sales and really did anyone expect it to outsell Zelda? Zelda is one of the most iconic game series of all time, no shame coming in behind them. Ghost Recon I assume is one of those boring shooter games? That's like McD's hamburgers, they sell a billion of them no matter how bad they are.

If I remember correctly that game made around a billion bucks in it's first three days of release. Who is left to buy it that hasn't bought it already? lol. Personally I was a little disappointed in GTA 5 myself. Don't get me wrong it was fun as hell and still a great game but it had a short single player and it didn't have any single player dlc because the stupid GTA online made them too much money so they were like screw single player.

So yeah... good luck Bioware. I love you and fear for ya. Hang in there and pour some soul and passion into the franchises or you're never going to get hired anywhere except on the cheap. EA definitely made its money back as it never takes huge financial risks on anything. The problem is how this could affect future BioWare products. Any missteps on the part of BioWare will lead to cuts and less creative freedom. The livelihood of the studio is on the line. It's probably going to sell less than Wildlands no matter how you look at it, but it's still worth noting Andromeda was released two weeks later and so only had half the time to rack up sales. Doesn't matter. Games make most of their money in the first month, specifically the first week. Mass Effect is a much stronger brand than Ghost Recon, and Wildlands had worse reviews than Andromeda did. Had MEA not had bad publicity, it would have been at the top of the list easily. I don't think you understand. The Switch has been sold out since it released. Nintendo sold around 900,000 Switch units and there have been supply shortages ever since. Ironically enough, more Switch copies of BOTW have actually sold than available Switch consoles to play them on. MEA's first week should have brought in huge numbers being available on three platforms. That obviously did not happen due to bad publicity. What a surprise: games that came 2 and 3 weeks earlier sold more copies. oh, by the way, another one of those threads, seriously? It is surprising when Wildlands got terrible reviews, BOTW is really available on only one console (the Wii U never had a large player base), and Mass Effect easily had the biggest fan base and hype going into its release. It doesn't matter that it released a few weeks later. Most games make most of their money in the first week of launch. Yes. Another thread giving information about where Mass Effect Andromeda stacks up with other competitors. We have so many of these threads on here compared to troll ones... How the hell is GTA 5 still selling like crazy 3 1/2 years after it came out? Micro-transactions and the fact that R* is still supporting Grand Theft Auto Online. That service is a moneymaker for them.

MEA just counts from the 21st, so March numbers arent really anything to the larger picture.
Also, few days after release Mac Walters was already talking in millions (plural) of players, so i think EA estimate of 3Million copies on the first month is very likely to be achieved. Which is not too shabby for all the inital flack it got. And reviews now taking the 1.05 patch into account, things are looking better.

The NPC includes all sales, including online sales: Retail Tracking Monitor retail sales of PC games and video games hardware, software, and accessories in the US and Canada. This service covers all distribution channels, including online sales. No other market research company offers this level of detail in point-of-sale market information. www.npd.com/wps/portal/npd/us/industry-expertise/video-games/While Zelda is certainly iconic and is my favorite Nintendo IP, it's an exclusive to only Nintendo platforms (most of the sales came exclusively from the Switch). The reality is that multiplatform games will almost always sell more than exclusive titles. It's why games like Horizon Zero Dawn are lower on the list. Especially with how few Switch consoles are available, it's rather embarrassing that BOTW topped Mass Effect which has a much larger base of consumers to pull from. Wildlands is an open world third person shooter. Had MEA not had such negative press, it should have easily crushed that game. As I said, it's metacritic was terrible and MEA was definitely more highly anticipated. Ghost Recon has not been a strong property in many years. It's not Call of Duty, which typically just prints money every year.

What we can take away from these numbers is bad press and a stumbling out of the gate hurt MEA's profitability significantly. Ghost Recon also released 2 weeks ahead of Mass Effect (March 7) and so had much longer to get those sales. And comparing MEA to Zelda is just...wrong. Zelda is a juggernaut. It's a religion. It's one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed game series of all time. Sure, it's a new console, but it's a new console that has been getting some pretty good reviews, it's Nintendo so people are going to buy it in droves anyway, and getting it and BOTW, which is like the second coming of Christ, means duh people are going to buy that instead of MEA. Look, we (most of us) love the Mass Effect series. It's a great and amazing series, but it has never had the selling power as something like Zelda. I think holding it's own against HZD is fantastic, though HZD is a console exclusive. HZD has a real chance of being GOTY (though I'm pretty sure that will be taken by BOTW). I think you will fine that MEA is selling well enough and that EA and Bioware will be happy with the profits. It's not a blockbuster, for sure, but I think they might see where a little extra funding might increase their profits for MEA2. Remember, too that IIRC NPD still does not include Origin sales, and I'm thinking a very good percentage of MEA sales will be digital on Origin.

I'm well aware of the usual sales pattern (and hence can't see Andromeda ever beating Wildlands' numbers), but Mass Effect being a 'much stronger' brand is very debatable IMO. Not in any way that translates to much stronger sales, at the very least. They're different genres, for one, with shooters traditionally selling much better than RPGs (Skyrim being an exception rather than the rule). With its current numbers, Andromeda is still the second best-selling ME game behind ME3. Even if there was no controversy on launch and the Metacritic score (to which you attribute some excessive importance IMO) was around 90, I just can't see how it would have 'crushed' a game like Wildlands as you claim.

Secondly, the title of the article seems to imply the opposite of what you are stating: "Activision, EA, Ubisoft, and other big names to provide digital sales data to NPD." I think I'm going to take the NPD's up to date website more seriously than a year old article, no offense.

PR IDIOCY FOR NOT RECOGNIZING THAT THE FORUMS HELPED BIOWARE Lol. What? Yeah, an EA sponsored "I hate EA" site with 4 years of "The endings! OMG let Bioware die! EA is the devil!" is assuredly helpful. Can't believe they closed that gem of positivity down.

I think I'm going to take the NPD's up to date website more seriously than a year old article, no offense. /shrug Fine, I don't really care. Was just trying to give you proper perspective. As much as I doubt it counts Origin even if it does that doesn't tell us anything except it is the third best selling game of the month despite coming out almost at the end of the month.

The sales data provided to the NPD Group will be from the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Games Store. PC sales will be listed separately and will include digital sales through Steam and retail sales. Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft will not be providing sales data for their first-party games at this time, and digital sales will not be provided from some certain sources, including Uplay platform, Origin platform, Battle.net, and the Nintendo eShop. As such, digital sales information will still be very incomplete, but it's a step in the right direction. www.gamnesia.com/news/the-npd-group-will-begin-tracking-digital-sales-from-select-publishers

What we can take away from these numbers is bad press and a stumbling out of the gate hurt MEA's profitability significantly. Again, software sales are front-loaded. Most of the sales will come in the first month, specifically the first week. MEA's placement is an indication of its weak opening performance. Zelda is a juggernaut... on Nintendo platforms. It's an exclusive. Zelda never sells better than most multiplatform games that are hits. It simply cannot due to being limited to Nintendo hardware. Especially with the release of a new console that has been sold out since it released, it's even more shocking that BOTW still surpassed MEA. But really it shouldn't be given all the negative press MEA has had, while BOTW has been universally praised and is the fourth highest rated game of all time. You are vastly underestimating the pull of the Mass Effect franchise. It never particularly sold well on the PS3, but that's because it started out as an Xbox 360 exclusive. Since most Xbox 360 owners jumped ship and bought PS4s, it's rather difficult to believe that MEA would not have sold well on the most successful console in video game history (PS4). No, bad press definitely hurt MEA as it is a major property. Losing to any console exclusive is telling and losing to a mediocre Ubisoft property is also telling. Based on the NPD website, their statistics include all online sales. The article that was linked above even suggests that Ubisoft, EA, Blizzard, etc. provide the NPD with their sales numbers. Doesn't matter. Games make most of their money in the first month, specifically the first week. Mass Effect is a much stronger brand than Ghost Recon, and Wildlands had worse reviews than Andromeda did. Had MEA not had bad publicity, it would have been at the top of the list easily. Skyrim, The Witcher 3, and Fallout 4 being the exceptions? All three of those games were monster hits and broke several records when they released. The only shooter that clearly will always sell better than everything else is Call of Duty. Ghost Recon, as I said before, has not been a powerful property for Ubisoft in over a decade. You vastly undervalue the power of the Mass Effect brand. It's not a niche JRPG that most have never heard of. It's one of the elite RPG Ips in the industry, along with The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, The Witcher, Final Fantasy, etc.

How the hell is GTA 5 still selling like crazy 3 1/2 years after it came out? Casuals. Anyone who just bought a PS4 or Xbox one or any kid who is finally old enough to pick the game up or get their parents to. It's GTA. I remember GTA 3 still being the highest demanded game until vice city came out. Then GTA 3 was still selling like crazy years later behind vice city. What's crazy is we got 3 GTA games for PlayStation 2, but we have yet to have a current gen only GTA game. Hopefully Red Dead comes out this year

As much as I doubt it counts Origin even if it does that doesn't tell us anything except it is the third best selling game of the month despite coming out almost at the end of the month. I'm okay with being wrong. There just haven't been any actual, solid evidence to prove that I am wrong. All that has been shown are old articles that may or may not be true anymore. Only the NPD would actually know what statistics it is accumulating since it is in direct contact with these various publishers. Just basing on the language of the NPD's website, they seem to imply all online sales are being considered. It's also worth putting into perspective that MEA lost to a brand that has been historically weak for over a decade as well as a property that is limited to a new console in short supply and an old console barely anyone purchased. I would bet money that MEA would be at the top of this list, regardless of the fact it came out in the last week of March, purely because hype, anticipation, and good reviews would have driven sales. That has been the case with every major AAA RPG that has been a smashing success. I'm not stating MEA is a failure. I am stating that bad press and a negative reception from the media and fans have negatively impacted its sales. Most games don't sell well long-term and only have legs in their initial weeks of released. A weak first week of sales is never a good sign. Most games that stumble out of the gate with issues do not recover financially. Look at Batman: Arkham Knight, Watch_Dogs, and Assassin's Creed Unity. Those games were killed by negative press and a terrible launch.
