How do you clean and maintenance the inside then? They do it. I bring them the rig every six months or so. I also have an air compressor in the garage. Interesting. Well, I have a I7 and a 1080, and I can do most things on my PC. I play games, do video editing, photoshop C6, and even use Daz3D. I don't use water cooling, I don't know if you need it for this setup. I just have a case with good airflow, fans, and a heatsink, and never have any issues. I have an ASUS MOBO, and most of my other components are Corsair products, never had any issue with those. I'll use a Corsair PSU until one gives me a reason not to, they always overperform and they last forever. Edit: If you're going to do SLI, then by all means water cooling.

If you plan on using the system for nothing but gaming (or mostly gaming with occasional photo/video editing on the side), then yes. However, if you're going to be doing more complicated workloads, AMD is worth looking into in terms of CPUs. It should handle most tasks fairly well, an I7 + 1080Ti is nothing to sneeze at. Very few tasks require more processing power than an I7 can provide.
I suppose some might want to buy a TITAN, but it also has a significantly higher cost attached to it.
As for SLI / Crossfire I'd say that it's not worth it at the moment given the relatively poor optimization and inability of many games to even use it effectively.
To be honest I feel like the current TITAN cards aren't worth the price of admission. As I noted they do tend to slightly outperform the 1080ti but not really by enough to justify the $1200 price tag compared to the $700 that the 1080ti is. Looking at specs, the TITAN Xp looks like it's barely an upgrade over the basic X pascal. It seems like they just upped the clock speed by around 3-4% and called it a day. I'm looking at upgrading myself in the next year or so but unless there is a new generation of TITAN card that's actually worth it, I'll be looking to the 1080ti for my GPU.

Oh also - not sure why people are voting for ATI graphics cards in your poll. ATI (now renamed to Radeon Technologies Group, and is now owned by AMD) doesn't have a high end GPU. Radeon is currently targeting the sub-$300 price range with their products, and that doesn't really belong in a high-end system like the one you're planning. They're currently hyping up their as-yet unreleased Vega product line, which is supposed to compete with the products at the top of Nvidia's product stack, but they haven't released any information about it at all.

Pearl, thank you! Half my my budget is going towards the Intel i7 and nVidia card. I'm buying an SSD for the OS, but I have a WD 2Tb HD that I will use just to keep games. I may buy another SSD for games that I'm constantly using.

Can confirm that while ATI cards can work great, they're notoriously fickle depending on which game you play. Also with drivers, i once updated mine and kept getting all kind of errors (the whole pc became unstable, the card wasn't damaged). Even reverting to old drivers didn't fix it, had to eventually format the PC to save my data. After some time dealing with their driver adware i had enough of it. I went back toh Nvidia because it's what i have used for years and imo they are the most reliable (less prone to crash games or screw your pc). That peace of mind is imo far better than saving a few bucks. Peace of mind is my goal. Thank you!

From personal experience I recommend Intel and Nvidia. Both offer better efficiency than AMD, and you'll find less compatibility issues with games going with Nvidia.

I tried SLI once, had 580 and instead of buying the best single card, which I think was a 980 at the time, I went for a second 580. Was a nightmare lol. I don't know if this is still the case, but then you could pretty much assume that at the release of a game SLI wasn't supported. I swore I would never do it again.

Ah PC building, great fun that! A thousand and one options. As the others have said I would go with an I7 and Nvidia card for sure. The Ryzen is looking impressive but I think it would be wise to wait on those a bit longer for people to really test them out and see how they perform and for better motherboards to come out. That is what I am personally doing.
Mass Effect: Andromeda even with older parts can run on high with decent FPS. I currently have a AMD FX 6300, GTX 960, and 16 GB of G-Skill RAM. I run most settings on High with the exception of Shadows and Lights which until high more intensive settings are not that different. Typically it runs between 45 - 60 FPS and does not drop below that. So if you get anything better than what I have you will be golden.
I would suggest a SSD for general game storage as a lot require downloads these days and the download will go faster on a SSD. I noticed a difference when I picked up a 2TB WD Gold HDD and started reinstalling stuff. Was suppose to be a 2TB WD Black but the guy at Bestbuy ordered the wrong one but it works and the specs look to be the exact same with the Gold reportedly being louder but honestly don't even notice.

I like personal experience than the advice of a guy behind the counter trying to squeeze me for every cent. I know from my own personal experience, the last batch of games I have now are barely clocking in at 30 fps but the rig is five years old. Frostbite tells me it's time to upgrade. AMD 8 core served me well but my ATI 7870 is long in the tooth like me.

Go i5. They're cheaper. And my ancient i5-2500K (still Sandy Bridge tech, none of that fancy Kabylake bollocks kids have these days) runs Andromeda on High. With 8GB of RAM and GTX 770. And that's not even the biggest baddest 770 I could have had. Not very useful for the OP, who looks set to go higher, but there are a lot of used i5s kicking around for $200 or so. Not gaming machines without adding a GPU and probably an upgraded PSU, but a good start.

I'm looking to upgrade my PC. This summer I'm going to use some of my traveling funds to buy a rig. I check constantly with Joker Productions and other techie YouTubers, but I want to hear from Bioware fans. Basically a rig to run Frostbite. If you were to build a PC that won't get upgraded for about three years, what type of processor, mobo, and GPU would you recommend? Budget is $3500. Things are about to change. AMD just bought Ryzen CPU's out and Vega GPU's are to be released soon. So Intel is actively shitting their collective pants. They've stopped holding back and they're about to bring out Kabylake X and Skylake X CPU's in June/July instead of later (which they were going to but got spooked by Ryzen's performance). Kabylake X top CPU is gonna be a bit faster than the current highest clocked Intel CPU (7700K @ 4.2ghz stock clock). The Kabylake X chip that's gonna succeed it will be the 7740K and will run @ 4.5ghz stock clock and will be 4 cores 8 threads. The Skylake X chips will be the intel extreme range - best of the best. Now i'm willing to bet Intel is going to release them at cheaper prices than their current high end chips in order to crush the AMD Ryzen line-up as fast as they can. So my advice, wait 2 months and see how the battle goes before you jump right in and blow money on tech thats about to be replaced. Nvidia are also working on their GTX2060, 2070, 2080 cards right now as well. They are also spooked by AMD's incoming Vega graphics cards and will want to stay on top of the competition. So again, hold out just a few months and see how that battle unfolds. Watch for benchmarks and see who wins. 2 months is not a lot of time to wait.

Around mid-June, I figure I will have all the parts to have it assembled at the shop, The poll is up until May 30th. I'm excited, though. I don't have any real vices and I'm middle-aged (F***, I hate saying that.) so I don't have the urge to go out unless it's to a movie theater or see an outdoor concert in Austin or here in SA. Getting a computer built is way more exciting that shopping for a truck, a car, a camper, a boat, etc. I'm just an old-school nerd.

Nvidia is the way games are meant to be played... according to Nvidia. Sadly that is still true for a lot of games because AMD cards still have issues with games that are meant to be played with an Nvidia card. BTW isn't this rather an off-topic topic... A lot of games use custom Nvidia technology like HBAO and such.

Holy crap. AMD RYZEN is three times less than Intel and it's barely in second place. Server based sure. Last I checked gaming doesn't take server based chips, or server based performance. Gaming performance a i7-6700k is still beating ryzen chips.

You can build a great gaming PC for $1000 that will last you 3 years. In 3 years you buy a new $250 vid card and you're good for another 3 years. If you put $3500 on a PC today you're just wasting your money, high end expensive PCs are poor bang for the buck.

My 28" CRT Philips monitor is freakin' 3:4 dude. It's time for an upgrade which is hopefully included in the $3500.

If you put $3500 on a PC today you're just wasting your money, high end expensive PCs are poor bang for the buck. Fully agree. The one area that you didn't mention is your monitor preference, which may have a bearing on your video card choice which might have a bearing on the Power Supply choice. And if you're going full tilt on this system with that budget, make sure you get a top rated Power Supply and one that will power the whole system. If you already have a monitor that you don't intend on upgrading, then match the video card to that (and Power Supply if needed). If you have a 20" to 24" monitor, some of the high end video cards are not cost effective. But if you also want to upgrade to some huge monitor/tv then you need to spend more time considering which video card/Power Supply. Another factor that you have not mentioned, if you'll be playing SP and/or MP. With MP you'll want to consider two things - maybe a modem update as well as a monitor with low input lag/low display lag - i.e. very fast screen redraws/refresh rates. TVs generally are very slow refresh rates. A few people have mentioned liquid cooled units - case fans, video card fans, CPU fans can be noisier on the higher powered units. But the newer CPUs, cases and case fans are of much better quality now and something to consider, whether you chose air or liquid cooled (which also has fans) - ask your builder about fans. Cases - lots of options here depending on whether you want components visible with lots of bling lighting etc.

I didn't consider the size. I'm updating the original statement as well. I'm doing this on the fly. Sorry and thank you.
