I'm looking to upgrade my PC. This summer I'm going to use some of my traveling funds to buy a rig. I check constantly with Joker Productions and other techie YouTubers, but I want to hear from Bioware fans. Basically a rig to run Frostbite.
Clarification: I'm asking programmers who have experience on Frostbite which is the best combo to pull Ultra settings at 60fps and can handle it for three years or so.
Also, a big thanks to all those looking to save me money. Whether it be PC parts or getting a console, all of your advice is great. In a perfect world, I would love to get the rig under $2500 with a monitor (no need for gaming keyboard, Razer gamepad, Thrustmaster flight control stick, XBOX controller, HK speaker set and gaming mouse because I'm good on that.) and a PS4 because Horizon Zero Dawn and the Last of Us are games I'm wanting to play. PS4's are just so hard to obtain around here. My friend Paul got his through some garage sale app. Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, Gamestop are always out of PS4s, Switches, NES Classic systems. They go fast. Like truck is outside at 2pm on a Wednesday. You better be there gangster-ready to claim one.
If you were to build a PC that won't get upgraded for about three years, what type of processor, mobo, and GPU would you recommend?
Update 1: Budget is $3500.
Update 2: A monitor at least 27" wide. For example: Newsync B320X SonicBoom 32" 144Hz 1920 x 1080 Gaming Monitor VA Panel 1ms (OD)
Update 3: Ventilation issues. The desk setup is a closed PC portal with only the back side open. Water cooling absolutely necessary.
Update 4: Separate sound card. I don't see anything more than $100 that I can't use with a good set of headgear or 7.1 speaker system.

Nvidia is the way games are meant to be played... according to Nvidia. Sadly that is still true for a lot of games because AMD cards still have issues with games that are meant to be played with an Nvidia card. BTW isn't this rather an off-topic topic...

If you have the money to go for an I7 + 1080Ti - by all means, go for it, you will get a much better experience than on the peasant box. Nvidia + intel is still the best formula at the moment.
Just make sure that the other components are not made of pure garbage, if you pay for the good stuff pay a little more rather than having your PC crap on you because you wanted to save a few dollars with some cheap parts.
Also, I highly recommend water-cooling. Brilliant. I'll start pricing out water cooling

And here we go, on with the next console vs pc battle... Well, if a playtool is all you need and want to save some investment money, go for a console, also, there are more quite good "exclusive" games for consoles then PC. However, if you want to work with it, just a little bit (like browsing, emails, writing documents) then go for a PC. Keep in mind, the usual lifespan of a console is roughly 4-5 years, with PS4/XB1 around since end of 2013, a new generation is going to hit the market in about 1-2 years. By the time a new console gen hits the market, it is above an average PC and very outdated compared to the best PC available. In 1, max 2 years, any average PC beats the up to date console when it comes to power. BUT... that does not mean you will get better games out of a PC. Usualy, developers produce their games with the "lowest possible setting" (actualy the current console), so it can be released and sold for consoles as well. Usualy not going to have an "upgraded" version for PC. Games like StarCitizen are an except to the rule (I think by the time this morons finaly release SC, consoels will be powerfull enough to run it, so figure). So lets talk a bit about the tech. AMD vs Intel as well as AMD/ATI vs nVidia are in direct competition and race like mad to have the best tech available. So, in general there is not much of a difference, besides money. However, I found Intel seems to be more reliable and powerfull when playing games. It is not much though. What bugs me most about AMD is their drivers, they like never get it right. I find myself deinstalling an AMD driver updated and reverting to an old release more often then I would actualy like. Same applies to ATI (AMD) graphic adapters. On the other hand, I never had issues with nvidia, with ATI like always... So my suggestion: go for intel and nvidia. Btw, maybe you want to hit some charts first www.futuremark.com/hardware/cpuwww.futuremark.com/hardware/gpu

I just voted Intel + ATI for the hell of it (that's what I have) but it really depends on your budget. For instance, I was upgrading my old r9 270 and looking at a gtx 1050ti because I didn't want to go overboard, but I ended up paying a few $ more for a rx 470, which doesn't really have a nvidia equivalent.
Of course, if you can afford a 1080ti then get it. That's a no-brainer. If you can't, have a look at what cards are in your price range and check out some reviews. There should be loads around and reviewers will generally do plenty of performance comparisons to similar cards. Once you choose a card, make sure you also look at reviews of the particular makes and models of the card too.
As for a processor, I don't think anyone will advise against getting a core i7.
Edit: didn't see the budget - nvidia for that price range.

Proposed budget: $3500 This would be my first PC in two decades to have Intel. AMD is in Austin, so I try to support them. Still amazed by the benchmark RYZEN put up.

Some guides... Intel i5 is ideal unless you've got money to spare - but the AMD CPUs are better priced and have also forced Intel to reduce prices. Linus also has a lot of other guides on specific components. This one is about 5 months old (DIY), has 3 levels computers depending on how much you want to spend:

Go i5. They're cheaper.
And my ancient i5-2500K (still Sandy Bridge tech, none of that fancy Kabylake bollocks kids have these days) runs Andromeda on High. With 8GB of RAM and GTX 770. And that's not even the biggest baddest 770 I could have had.
Way back when, I heard a nice thing. i5s for gaming, i7s for video and hardcore computing power, i3s for office work. Unless your ego demands a monster, a really high-level i5 may be the solution.
As for GPUs, you could probably go GTX 980 if they're significantly cheaper. Sure, a 1080 will beat a Titan X, but do you need that much raw power?
My old i5 has been with me for five years, and it kicks ass. That's computer Valhalla worthy, right there.

Don't get an ATI, ever. The worst experiences ever with graphics cards was with ATI. Glitches, black screens, crashes, weird freaking problems. Ugh. Nvidia all the way. (Also, this thread doesn't require programming skills, just pc hardware )

Nvidia + intel is still the best formula at the moment. If you plan on using the system for nothing but gaming (or mostly gaming with occasional photo/video editing on the side), then yes. However, if you're going to be doing more complicated workloads, AMD is worth looking into in terms of CPUs.

My ego demands full power!!! Well, not exactly, I am not going to do any upgrades for another three years to keep the warranty in place. There is a shop here in San Antonio that will put together your computer from parts you supplied, handle all the BIOS settings and will cover fixes for three years. So once they seal it, it's closed off or my $90 builders fee is forfeit.

Assuming money isn't a factor, Intel + Nvidia is still the best combo.
The recently released Ryzen 7 series of AMD CPU however has been rather impressive in performance given that they're a fraction of the price of of the i7s.
GPU wise, Nvidia is still ahead of ATI and if you want to aim for 60 FPS @ 4k you're looking at one of three cards: 1080ti, TITAN X Pascal, or the Titan Xp. The 1080ti is the most cost effective of those cards while the Titan Xp is the most powerful.
I'd also take benchmarks with a grain of salt. The futuremark list may put the 1080ti ahead of the Titan X, but in most practical tests I've seen the Titan X tends to slightly outperform the 1080ti in gaming. I would still choose 1080ti myself over it though, just because it's significantly cheaper for a very small loss in performance.
The same goes for the Ryzen 1800x which while still impressive, I'm seeing it fall behind most of the top i7 CPUs in practical gaming tests. The price to performance ratio of the Ryzen is its biggest strength rather than attempting to actually outperform the current top i7s.
For mobo, personally I like ASUS. I don't tend to get too much into this other than to ensure that it can hold the CPU and RAM that I'm after, though one thing I do is make sure to get one without a wireless NIC. For some reason having wifi capability seems to increase the price, at least where I live, by around $100 with no other changes. Since I have no need of wireless connection for gaming, I don't bother with it.

Can confirm that while ATI cards can work great, they're notoriously fickle depending on which game you play. Also with drivers, i once updated mine and kept getting all kind of errors (the whole pc became unstable, the card wasn't damaged). Even reverting to old drivers didn't fix it, had to eventually format the PC to save my data.
After some time dealing with their driver adware i had enough of it. I went back toh Nvidia because it's what i have used for years and imo they are the most reliable (less prone to crash games or screw your pc). That peace of mind is imo far better than saving a few bucks.

If you plan on using the system for nothing but gaming (or mostly gaming with occasional photo/video editing on the side), then yes. However, if you're going to be doing more complicated workloads, AMD is worth looking into in terms of CPUs. So, using Adobe Photoshop and some mod tools like the GECK are better on AMD? I'm not familiar with GECK, so I don't have an answer for you on that one. The performance difference you'll see in Photoshop is most likely not going to be significant (or even perceptible). In general, the more CPU-bound the programs you will be using are, the better they will perform on Ryzen systems since Ryzen CPUs have more cores and more threads than similarly-priced Intel processors. However, the individual cores are slower, so with things that aren't designed to use more than three or four cores will perform 10-15% better on Intel systems. Games fall into the latter category, favoring faster cores over higher core count. It all depends on what you need out of the computer. Intel and AMD will both deliver great performance, so there isn't really a wrong answer here. One company does comparatively better in some workloads, and comparatively worse in others. One thing I will mention is that whenever Intel comes out with an updated line of CPUs, they frequently change the number of pins that the CPU has, meaning you have to buy a new motherboard if you want to upgrade. AMD has said that they plan for their new CPU socket to be in use all the way up to 2020, so in theory you'll get more mileage out of an AM4 motherboard than an equivalent Intel motherboard, but this is just AMD's current plan and as we all know, plans can change.

Thank you.

How do you clean and maintenance the inside then?

Games fall into the latterd category, favoring faster cores over higher core count. Ahhh... so it's the individual core speed not so much the amount of cores. Now I see why there is a price difference.

I also have an air compressor in the garage.

Ahhh... so it's the individual core speed not so much the amount of cores. Now I see why there is a price difference. There's also the fact that Intel hasn't had any relevant competition for the last five years, so they've basically been charging whatever they want because they know people had to buy their products. Hopefully this will change now that AMD is capable of competing with them again, but it'll take months for any changes to occur.

If you plan on using the system for nothing but gaming (or mostly gaming with occasional photo/video editing on the side), then yes. However, if you're going to be doing more complicated workloads, AMD is worth looking into in terms of CPUs. It should handle most tasks fairly well, an I7 + 1080Ti is nothing to sneeze at. Very few tasks require more processing power than an I7 can provide.
I suppose some might want to buy a TITAN, but it also has a significantly higher cost attached to it.
As for SLI / Crossfire I'd say that it's not worth it at the moment given the relatively poor optimization and inability of many games to even use it effectively.
That's why I'm asking. They keep pushing to do SLI and I keep hearing the opposite in these forums and on YouTube. Thank you.
