In regards to water cooling. Someone mentioned that usually it's not necessary, and I agree. However, less heat means less stress on your components, better performance, and a longer lifespan. Water cooling is great and you are right on about the better performance and longer lifespan it can bring. And now its been made easier than ever to use thanks to closed loop coolers such as the Corsair H100i etc etc. I've been using those types of watercoolers for 3 years now. Never looked back.

Yeah, I'm looking at the price of the rigs and they vary but not exceeding $300. Thank you.

You can build a great gaming PC for $1000 that will last you 3 years. In 3 years you buy a new $250 vid card and you're good for another 3 years. If you put $3500 on a PC today you're just wasting your money, high end expensive PCs are poor bang for the buck. Fully agree. The one area that you didn't mention is your monitor preference, which may have a bearing on your video card choice which might have a bearing on the Power Supply choice. And if you're going full tilt on this system with that budget, make sure you get a top rated Power Supply and one that will power the whole system. If you already have a monitor that you don't intend on upgrading, then match the video card to that (and Power Supply if needed). If you have a 20" to 24" monitor, some of the high end video cards are not cost effective. But if you also want to upgrade to some huge monitor/tv then you need to spend more time considering which video card/Power Supply. Another factor that you have not mentioned, if you'll be playing SP and/or MP. With MP you'll want to consider two things - maybe a modem update as well as a monitor with low input lag/low display lag - i.e. very fast screen redraws/refresh rates. TVs generally are very slow refresh rates. A few people have mentioned liquid cooled units - case fans, video card fans, CPU fans can be noisier on the higher powered units. But the newer CPUs, cases and case fans are of much better quality now and something to consider, whether you chose air or liquid cooled (which also has fans) - ask your builder about fans. Cases - lots of options here depending on whether you want components visible with lots of bling lighting etc. I normally used to do that, but I'm placing it inside this desk that I bought at an estate sale. It's a hardwood (Oak) stained desk that I think was made back in the early 90s. It's beautiful and has a cabinet/closed door shelf for just the PC. The left side of the desk are three drawers where I am storing the flight stick, XBOX controller, Razer gaming pad, etc. Ventilation issues! It's not going to suck that much air in with the cabinet door closed.

I'm looking to upgrade my PC. This summer I'm going to use some of my traveling funds to buy a rig. I check constantly with Joker Productions and other techie YouTubers, but I want to hear from Bioware fans. Basically a rig to run Frostbite. If you were to build a PC that won't get upgraded for about three years, what type of processor, mobo, and GPU would you recommend? Update 1: Budget is $3500. Update 2: A monitor at least 30" wide. For example: Newsync B320X SonicBoom 32" 144Hz 1920 x 1080 Gaming Monitor VA Panel 1ms (OD) Update 3: Ventilation issues. The desk setup is a closed PC portal with only the back side open. Water cooling absolutely necessary. IMO don't combine amd and intel or amd and nvidia it doesn't always work out well. I7 and 1080ti would be great. For 4K though you'd need a minor a 4.0-4.6 CPU and two 1080ti's to have decent FPS.

If the monitor is 30" is 4K really important?

The left side of the desk are three drawers where I am storing the flight stick, XBOX controller, Razer gaming pad, etc. If the desk is quite enclosed, you'll definitely need to consider your cooling options carefully, because heat buildup may be a problem depending on your environment - so the case choice and cooling system will be important. Also, you'll want to have your dealer install software/cooling systems that you can monitor for temperatures. Alternately, modify the enclosure of the desk to ensure you have good airflow. Something like the i5 CPUs can simply use the stock fan if you've got a good case fan and desk airflow. The higher end video cards tend to run hot but are designed for high temps - but again, you want to make sure your case/desk system has good airflow. You'd probably only need a liquid cooler if you intend to have the i7 CPUs overclocked - but the CPUs you can overclock are more expensive and require specific motherboards - from your comments and posts, it's not likely you'll want to get into the overclocked versions of anything or need to. Another thing you didn't mention is sound. Most of the motherboard on-board sound systems are adequate for many people. But if your budget allows and you have great hearing, consider a sound system for the room - could be just a pair of quality speakers (or headset) or sound card and multiple/surround type system, etc. Monitors and tvs don't always have good speaker systems, but check that out.

Another update! Thank you. No, I hate the sound from RealTek onboard devices. It's so weak and I don't know if it's Windows 10, but I'm done with that. SoundBlaster seems like the go-to-choice. Also, I don't really expect to overclock the system, but the shop will do that if I request it. They will add cooling software because that's part of their services. It's been done on the last three these guys\gals put it together. This rig has four fans. One in the front, two on the side of the case, one in the rear and of course the CPU and GPU have their own. I just pulled the system forward and it's pretty cool, but the bottom fan is warm. I'm going to cut a hole in the desk on the inner side where that fan in particular is facing. Thank you.

I use an i7-4790K, it's still one of the best CPU for gaming which isn't so expensive or overkill.

Whether it be PC parts or getting a console, all of your advice is great. In a perfect world, I would love to get the rig under $2500 with a monitor (no need for gaming keyboard, Razer gamepad, Thrustmaster flight control stick, XBOX controller, HK speaker set and gaming mouse because I'm good on that.) and a PS4 because Horizon Zero Dawn and the Last of Us are games I'm wanting to play. PS4's are just so hard to obtain around here. My friend Paul got his through some garage sale app. Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, Gamestop are always out of PS4s, Switches, NES Classic systems. They go fast. Like truck is outside at 2pm on a Wednesday. You better be there gangster-ready to claim one.If you were to build a PC that won't get upgraded for about three years, what type of processor, mobo, and GPU would you recommend? The desk setup is a closed PC portal with only the back side open. Water cooling absolutely necessary. Update 4: Separate sound card. I don't see anything more than $100 that I can't use with a good set of headgear or 7.1 speaker system. I couldn't do it for $3500. Especially if you expect to keep it for at least 3 years. If trying to keep expenditures to a minimum over time I would invest a top-notch case, power supply, and external pump/radiator solution, external NAS/storage solution. These are components that you can reuse down the road in your next system. CPU, local storage, motherboard, memory. These things could be made to last 3-4 years. You are less likely to reuse these components. You still want to choose components from manufacturers that have good reputations. GPU. Don't know about everyone else but I find that I have to upgrade my GPU about every 18-24 months. At the moment the 1080ti seems to be the most economical/long-lived solution. I don't think a 1080 would suffice and I wouldn't spend the money on a Titan Xp.

I'm buying everything from NewEgg and I pay attention to the user scores. If it's less than a 4 rating, I don't even consider it unless the price demands a second look. Most of the stuff is MSI (mobo, 1080ti card) and the power supply is usually powerful enough to accommodate even more down the road, but I have no idea what the minimum will be. I'm guessing it's going to be really high using an i7 and 1080ti. The shop that I'm using also has a lot of parts on hand like memory (Corsair), SSD (SansDisk) and WD HDD. Thank you. This is good stuff to consider.

MSI is a good brand. Steady, few problems. I've used AMD and Nvidia together with no problems. Just please for the love of little fairies, stay away from ATI. SO much suckage. I also agree with the poster that said buy a decent system now, and it should be good for 3 years, upgrade the video card then, and it'll be good for another 3 years. I actually did that with my current machine, and it still is running MEA at ultra, with multiple additional programs running, without a hiccup (other than the freaking known issues). (And sorry to keep harping on this...most of the programmers I know don't even own their own computer, and couldn't tell a CPU from a heatsink lol )

What does programming have to do with buying gaming hardware?
Save yourself some money and seriously consider the new AMD's.

All multi platform games are gonna be bounded by console hardware and almost all PC exclusives are gonna target as many computers as possible so going all out seems like a waste unless you are aiming for 4K or Super duper Ultra settings 1080p for the next 3 years. I ran Inquisition and Mirror's Edge catalyst with a legacy ATI card on high settings 1080p (had to bypass Origin's hardware check manually) combined with an old intel CPU. had them for 4 years. after that got a RX 480. when Andromeda came out on default settings i got high 60 fps 1080p (didn't test higher settings) with the same CPU. which of course gonna keep using it till it is f***ed which can happen any moment now (*knocking on wood ) since i am fine with 1080p for now i usually go for cost efficient choices and only go out on things like Power supplies, saving the rest of my money for buying other stuff like possibly a console or whatever.

Really good stuff. I can't wait. Oh and the modding. I can't wait. The game needs so much polishing, but I'm beginning to see what they intended to give us all along. Yeah, there are suck issues that are going to drive me bonkers, but I can fix some of them on my own. I just hope Bioware keeps the momentum moving forward and improves the voice acting, polishing, etc. That wasn't a complain of mine in Inquisition so it feels like they stepped backward. You know what would be really cool, if they go over some of the takes and fix the weird gaps. It's an issue on the PS4. There are points in the game like Suvi and Addison where they take really long pauses after the lips moved.

What does programming have to do with buying gaming hardware? Save yourself some money and seriously consider the new AMD's. Gaming. I'll edit the title for clarification. Thank you. I thought the programmers could tell me what they would recommend buying to maximize Frostbite on Ultra at 60fps on a 30" widescreen.

I use an i7-4790K, it's still one of the best CPU for gaming which isn't so expensive or overkill. It's still an i7! Thank you. And hell yeah, it's cheaper. THANK YOU!

All multi platform games are gonna be bounded by console hardware and almost all PC exclusives are gonna target as many computers as possible so going all out seems like a waste unless you are aiming for 4K or Super duper Ultra settings 1080p for the next 3 years.I ran Inquisition and Mirror's Edge catalyst with a legacy ATI card on high settings 1080p (had to bypass Origin's hardware check manually) combined with an old intel CPU. had them for 4 years. after that got a RX 480. when Andromeda came out on default settings i got high 60 fps 1080p (didn't test higher settings) with the same CPU. which of course gonna keep using it till it is f***ed which can happen any moment now (*knocking on wood ) since i am fine with 1080p for now i usually go for cost efficient choices and only go out on things like Power supplies, saving the rest of my money for buying other stuff like possibly a console or whatever. That's my goal. I want 60 fps on a 30" widescreen 1920x1080 and every preset set to Ultra. Thank you! 1080ti seems to be good enough then. also since you mentioned The Last of Us in your first post, if your internet is fast enough you can use Sony's streaming service (PS Now) to play the PS3 version on PC if i am not mistaken, which you are probably aware of but i mentioned it just in case.

Go i5. They're cheaper. And my ancient i5-2500K (still Sandy Bridge tech, none of that fancy Kabylake bollocks kids have these days) runs Andromeda on High. With 8GB of RAM and GTX 770. And that's not even the biggest baddest 770 I could have had. Way back when, I heard a nice thing. i5s for gaming, i7s for video and hardcore computing power, i3s for office work. Unless your ego demands a monster, a really high-level i5 may be the solution. As for GPUs, you could probably go GTX 980 if they're significantly cheaper. Sure, a 1080 will beat a Titan X, but do you need that much raw power? My old i5 has been with me for five years, and it kicks ass. That's computer Valhalla worthy, right there. My ego demands full power!!! Well, not exactly, I am not going to do any upgrades for another three years to keep the warranty in place. There is a shop here in San Antonio that will put together your computer from parts you supplied, handle all the BIOS settings and will cover fixes for three years. So once they seal it, it's closed off or my $90 builders fee is forfeit. Sounds good. We only get two years warranty around here. An i5-7500 should be able to Ultra a lot of things in the coming years, plus it's about 4 grand cheaper around these parts, which might make around 200 dead presidents in the US. As I said, though, if you demand MOAR POWAR or video processing/something else that might require extensive processing power, the i7 may be what you're after. Personally, maybe I shouldn't say much. Can't say I haven't been eyeing the i7-7700, but the i5 probably wins the bang for buck ratio with me. How do you clean and maintenance the inside then? Good point. If you don't clean it, it'll be dusty, performance will drop, and overheating may arise within six to twelve months. They better have the option to bring the PC to them for routine maintenance every now and then. And even then, few things beat getting elbow-deep in a case. Trust me, that's how deep I went last time. (Haha, that's what she said.) Go i5. They're cheaper. And my ancient i5-2500K (still Sandy Bridge tech, none of that fancy Kabylake bollocks kids have these days) runs Andromeda on High. With 8GB of RAM and GTX 770. And that's not even the biggest baddest 770 I could have had. Not very useful for the OP, who looks set to go higher, but there are a lot of used i5s kicking around for $200 or so. Not gaming machines without adding a GPU and probably an upgraded PSU, but a good start. I'm not talking used i5s, can't really be talking about prices in the US, but that was an example of how processors may live way past their prime. Can my Sandy Bridge compete with a Kabylake? No. But it gets the job done every day and twice on Sunday. It will also never be a gaming machine without a real GPU (maybe 980s would be a fine budget variant for the 1080, last time I was properly acquainted with GPUs was when I was buying my 770, and you can probably tell that wasn't yesterday) but if you put in a good processor (and for a new PC, I don't think I'd recommend anything below the ix-7x000 stuff, for longevity) you can have a great base, and the only thing you'll do to it for the few coming years is switch the GPU. My i5 has seen at least three GPUs throughout it's service. And two mobo's.

Nvm, I just read this "Intel's previous generation i7-4790K and i5-4690K are nearly as fast as Skylake in gaming performance, but they're also the same price as the i5-7600K and i7-7700K. If you have one of these, great, but we wouldn't recommend buying a new LGA1150 part at this time (unless you already have an LGA1150 motherboard and DDR3 memory, or the price is exceptionally attractive)."

If you're doing 1080p gaming (and planning on staying at that for long time), 1080ti (and to some extent 1070) is an overkill. So you can save some money by going 1060 by NVidia or RX580 by AMD. If you decide to go above 1080p at some point, you can either buy the 1080(ti) now (more expensive) or buy it when you decide to get a new monitor at which point the card will be cheaper. As a side note, never had a single problem with AMD drivers (clean install is a must, people).
As for CPU, I'd go for Ryzen 5 (Ryzen 7 is not really worth getting if you're mainly gaming):
1) More bang for the buck from the get go (ie. 1600x has 6C/12T as opposed to 7600K with 4C/4T for virtually same price) 2) You won't need to change the motherboard for at least 4 years (in case you need to change CPU in the meantime) 3) Future proof, more and more games will require more cores/threads, not less

Yup. LGA1150's were intended as a replacement for my LGA1155. LGA1151 is probably the better choice if it's supposed to last a while. If you're doing 1080p gaming (and planning on staying at that for long time), 1080ti (and to some extent 1070) is an overkill. So you can save some money by going 1060 by NVidia or RX580 by AMD. NEVER go full AMD. Especially when there are games that only recently switched to 64bit. Fewer stronger cores do better than several weaker ones, because you can count on that performance in everything, even if someone forgot to make it 64bit.
