They both kinda suck honestly. A lot is the voice direction but they're also slightly amateur despite of it. Tom Taylorson makes that annoyingly smarmy crack every time he delivers a standard dialogue response which makes him sound like he should've voiced Sonic The Hedgehog instead and needless to say I feel like Ryder is a cartoon hero instead of a human being. Sara sounds too raspy and the acting borders on cringy when she has to emote a lot, I find, but overall she still gets the job done because Sara sounds like a girl in her early twenties and inexperienced at what she does.
They're both kinda bad to be honest.

Funny that I have the complete opposite opinion. I think Tom did an amazing job especially at the casual dialogue options. From what Ive seen, Im not really a fan of fryda's performnace. I think she sounds decent but nothing special. Tom's perfromance stood out to me way more. But Im doing a female run soon so maybe Ill warm up to her voice after doing a full playthrough.

I'm still on my first playthrough with Sara and I haven't played Scott yet but from what I've heard in the previews they both sound great. Male Shepard was unbearably bad. Female Shepard is still the best.

Tom Taylorson's voice acting seems to be one of the few things about MEA that critics have consistently praised. Given how inconsistent the actual dialogue is, I think he does a stellar job.
I genuinely don't understand people's complaints about his voice acting. He's up there with my favourite VAs in a video game. Maybe people are using the casual dialogue options too much? Those are mostly bad. Stick to professional and emotional, with the odd bit of logic.
Haven't heard much of Fryda yet. The voice I like least is probably Cora's. I'm a bit conflicted because her VA actually does a good job. There's just an edge to her actual voice that grates a bit.

I'm still playing, nostalgia aside, Taylorson is light years better than Mark Meer. However, Jennifer Hale is still the queen. I wanted to play as female Ryder, but that viral flirting scene with Suvi killed all my hopes.

MRyder is pretty good, but FemRyder's voice bugs me, it's so monotone and dragging, like she isn't really into it. I'll still do a complete FemRyder run at some point because normally this doesn't hold me back to at least give it a chance once.
I prefer male Ryder's voice. Nothing to do with who does what better, just about how they sound in my ear. I played once with each and fem Ryder's voice just started to grate after a while - it's especially bad through the helmet. Too scratchy, hurts my ears. Also, the giggling like a 5 yr old during the sex scene with Jaal was just bad. That had little to do with the voice acting though.

This game cannot be allowed to have anything positive said about it. The internet has demanded it. Not really, other than not being able to stand male Ryder's voice, I'm enjoying the game. The only other real negative I can pull out the hat about this game is the very busy nature of the UI with how it deals with the endless quests. There's been a few times I've been unsure whether I'm progressing the main quest or not due to the sheer amount of quests that can appear from time to time. This is because a lot of quests get put on hold until you trigger some other random quest.

Hi, I'm slightly late to the party so apologies if this has been discussed umpteen dozen times. Anyway, I began playing this game last week and after initially rolling a male Ryder, I found the entire experience off putting. He sounds like a complete douche as the Americans like to say. Virtually every moment of those initial 3 hours were painful to sit through. So much so, I considered binning the game and moving on. But it's Mass Effect, so decided to re roll a fem Ryder and wow, the jump in quality is night and day. She doesn't come off as being a douche, she's actually funny when it comes to delivering her sarcastic and satire lines. Some genuine laugh out loud moments. Kind of reminds me of the dilemma I had when I first played Sunset Overdrive on the xbone. The male protagonist sounded like he had jumped straight from an 80's/90's Bill and Ted film. It was awful. Hated it then, hate it now. Then I switched over to the female protagonist and like this game, the difference was night and day. Turned out to be one of the most enjoyable games I've played on any platform this gen. So yeah, I'm I overreacting here? I prefer rolling male protagonists given the option, but sometimes the quality of the acting simply doesn't make it a viable choice. Other than that, currently liking the game. I have to disagree. Plus I think Ryder is leaps and bonds better than robotic Shepard. Shepard always seemed like he was constipated on expressing emotions. Ryder reminds me of a Nathan Drake, James Kirk, Starlord, Indiana Jones type character.

I played as male Ryder and I thought he was the wrong voice actor choice and performance. Most of the time he sounds and delivers his like some cast member from Scooby Doo cartoon. Once I made that revelation, I couldn't un-hear it. Don't like how male Ryder looks too. He looks like some dude from the 50s, definitely not the future. Unless we're talking Fallout series future. ... I miss Commander Bro Shepard. The scooby doo thing is pretty funny but to be fair on the 50's look, Scott looks like every white guy in his 20s in LA and NYC present day. The 50's slick back haircut with scruff has been a thing for a while

I think both Ryder VA's did a lovely job overall, especially considering the occasional cringe-worthy lines they had to deliver. There were definitely moments of bad voice acting in other characters. - Drack's introduction was bad, but it honestly sounded like a bad take was used. The rest of his voice-work was fine. - In contrast, every single word outta Morda's mouth made me wanna scream (a krogan valley-girl...seriously, Bioware?). But I am not sure if that is the fault of the voice actor or bad direction. - Peebee's voice was too Disney-ish for me, but again, I think this was bad direction, not bad-quality voice work. - I really did not like Suvi's voice, but I have very strong dislike for raspy, whispery voices (as well as vocal frying, lisping, thick-tongued ickiness, and folks who let the saliva build up in their lower lip when they talk). Those types of sounds are like nails on a chalkboard to me in real life. I just wanna scream at them to speak up, speak clearly, speak like you give a shit that you are speaking! The best voice in the ME series will always be Meer's Shepherd for me (although I loved femShep's VA as well). He spoke clearly, didn't overdo it on the emotional beats (ie, he was understated and subtle, which I really admired), and he had just enough of the Canadian accent to make his voice unique (ie compared to British and American accents, which tend to dominate those roles). Occasionally, the Ryder VAs sound like they are trying too hard (if that makes any sense). Ie, a bit of overacting. But other than that, I thought they were fine. I do, however, understand how bad voice acting (or simply a voice you don't like) can ruin an experience, so I am glad you were able to play the game as Sara, OP. Being a hillbilly, I've watched so many movies where actors butcher the Appalachian accent (I'm looking at you Beautiful Mind), and I have never understood how paid actors could be that terrible at their job!

Think it comes down to preference thing. I absolutely couldn't stand male shepards voice(when many preferred him over ten shep), I considered it bland, boring, etc etc where as femshep had fire to what she says, was passionate, etc etc. i haven't even given male Ryder a chance since I went with fem Ryder off the bat and was hooked, I saw no need to experiment when I had already found the voice that worked just fine. I felt the opposite. I felt Meer was the more solid choice. Hale did slightly better I think in ME 2, but then Meer just came back stronger in ME 3 (just...far too many times Hale did a line I would cringe at when after hearing it done with Meer was dead on). But to the OP, so long as you can enjoy one of the two VA's and play the game, that's what matters in the end.

The most disappointing part about this game is (some of) the writing and for me, Taylorson's voice acting is the only thing making the worst of the dialogue bearable. Seriously tho, if you're finding stuff douchey/sitcom-ish, avoid the casual dialogue like the plague. Sarcastic Hawke did it better.

Funny, Tom Taylorson currently is my favorite voice for a Bioware protagonist; however, I am often told I am reminiscent of a feminine hygiene product... YMMV I love Tom Taylorson's voice acting. Of course, I also loved Mark Meers.

No way, Male Ryder voice is really good. It also matches the looks of default Ryder really well. It's not just good, but he has such great inflection in line with what he's saying. The lack of that is what I believe was a complaint about Mark Meers. The lightness of his voice also perfectly works with the look of default Scott Ryder. I think what people are really saying is that they don't like how Ryder is written because they want something else. I've seen plenty of instances where they want an explorer to act and sound just like a soldier for...reasons.

But to the OP, so long as you can enjoy one of the two VA's and play the game, that's what matters in the end. Also preferred Meer. I can't put a finger on it exactly but I felt like Hale's voice lent itself more to Renegade. She sounded kind of tough, which I suppose is fine for a soldier, but I didn't identify with it much. So, for example, I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Wonder Woman, but both of them have a more feminine sounding voice that Hale lacked. I don't know that I'm really explaining it right, but it's something along those lines. Now, I know a woman doesn't have to sound like any kind of stereotypical female but, again, I felt like her voice acting was leading me more to the Renegade path. Meer sounded like a traditional "masculine" soldier type. He was all business for so long that, even when he had some downtime, he remained the same. On the other side of things we've got Ryder, the explorer. The Ryder twins did have time in the Alliance but they're young and were booted out because of their father's AI research. They didn't spend years being molded into perfect soldiers. Think Jenkins, for example, as a younger soldier and I think he lines up quite nicely with the Ryder Twins. They're really just ordinary 20 somethings (in a world where they might not even have children for another 30 years) so their voice and actions reflect that.
