Hi, I'm slightly late to the party so apologies if this has been discussed umpteen dozen times.
Anyway, I began playing this game last week and after initially rolling a male Ryder, I found the entire experience off putting. He sounds like a complete douche as the Americans like to say. Virtually every moment of those initial 3 hours were painful to sit through. So much so, I considered binning the game and moving on. But it's Mass Effect, so decided to re roll a fem Ryder and wow, the jump in quality is night and day. She doesn't come off as being a douche, she's actually funny when it comes to delivering her sarcastic and satire lines. Some genuine laugh out loud moments.
Kind of reminds me of the dilemma I had when I first played Sunset Overdrive on the xbone. The male protagonist sounded like he had jumped straight from an 80's/90's Bill and Ted film. It was awful. Hated it then, hate it now. Then I switched over to the female protagonist and like this game, the difference was night and day. Turned out to be one of the most enjoyable games I've played on any platform this gen.
So yeah, I'm I overreacting here? I prefer rolling male protagonists given the option, but sometimes the quality of the acting simply doesn't make it a viable choice. Other than that, currently liking the game.

Funny, Tom Taylorson currently is my favorite voice for a Bioware protagonist; however, I am often told I am reminiscent of a feminine hygiene product...
YMMV

I prefer rolling male protagonists given the option, but sometimes the quality of the acting simply doesn't make it a viable choice. Other than that, currently liking the game. I think you did the right thing by switching to the protagonist you have liked the VA for. I always do it in the Bio games (and often end up liking males more, tbh).
In case of Andromeda, I played my first PT with the female, and she looked gorgeous! However, I thought her VA was too girlish and she was playing exaggerated shy and cute too much. I am playing right now with the male Ryder and like his smoother, more self-confident delivery.
I've also played the female on the 'right side', i.e. Logical/Professional, and I play my M!Ryder on the left side, i.e. Casual/Emotional. F!Ryder picked all the "good" choices, and the male picks all the "bad" choices.
Overall, I like the male better, so he is going to be my canon run.
If you enjoy the female more, that's your Ryder! Go for it!
Where the M!Ryder does fall short imo compared to the F!Ryder, is the skin on the face presets is really bad compared to the F!Ryder, and more heads animate poorer, because they over-exaggerate the facial wrinkling if you change mouth, eyes and brows at all. Also, M!Ryder has no appealing casual outfit vs F!Ryder scarf and jacket.
That's all the differences that I felt could be looked into if bio choses to pretty-up the game some for a male PC later. I would not really call it a huge gulf.

I think both Tom and Fryda did an amazing job. I've played both male and female Ryder and love them both. If you don't like Bro Ryder though at least you can still play Sis Ryder and enjoy the game.

I think both are pretty good. My only issue is Tom Taylorson sounds too much like Nolan North. Bioware clearly wanted Ryder to sound like Drake, they should have spent the money on the real thing.

Think it comes down to preference thing. I absolutely couldn't stand male shepards voice(when many preferred him over ten shep), I considered it bland, boring, etc etc where as femshep had fire to what she says, was passionate, etc etc. i haven't even given male Ryder a chance since I went with fem Ryder off the bat and was hooked, I saw no need to experiment when I had already found the voice that worked just fine.

I stopped my Male Ryder game, and switched to Female Ryder. I just couldn't stand the voice, and it sounder even more ridiculous coming out of my custom Ryder.

Okay, my full VA preferences for the voiced Bioware's protagonists:
ME/DA:
F!Shepard = M!Shepard F!Inquisitor=M!Inquisitor (American)
M!Ryder >F!Ryder M!Hawke >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> F!Hawke
SWTOR:
M!Agent >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> F!Agent* M!BH*** = F!BH M!Consular** <<<<<<<< F!Consular M!Inquisitor >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>F!Inquisitor M!Knight = F!Knight M!Trooper>F!Trooper M!Smuggler <F!Smuggler**** M!Warrior = F!Warrior
* worst female protagonist voice ever ** worst male protagonist voice ever *** best male protagonist voice ever **** best female protagonist voice ever

I have to disagree I think he did a great job. I actually hated male shep's voice and never played a male shep for that reason. DA series I liked their male and female actors for hawke and inquisitor (for quizzy only british version...I have never finished the play through with the american accent). I like female ryder too, but some of her lines are so flat or said with really no emotion/tone. It's not horrible, but unless Male ryder gets worse after eos I think male ryder has the better VA this time around. That being said I will probably play female ryder more just because I typically don't play a lot of guy characters. Since there is less M/M options doesn't make a lot of sense for me.

I can't make up my mind up about "Suvi". I'm Scottish and if there's one thing I can't stand in games is a forced/exaggerated Scottish accent. Like the one we got in DA:I in the Hissing Wastes (the scout we stumble upon). One of the most awful Scottish accents I have ever heard in any game.

I thought they both did a great job. They're supposed to be twins, not clones. Each actor should have a different approach to their character.
Still, what one person finds off putting another may find suitable and that's absolutely cool. It's a personal preference, not a matter of quality of the actor.

Suvi is my pick for the worst female VA in Andromeda. Jaal holds this distinction for a male VA.

Having just looked her up, yes she is. Maybe I simply don't like hearing my accent played back to me if that makes sense. She's not awful hence why I'm still on the fence about her, but I'm always suspicious whenever I hear a Scottish accent. hahaha

MRyder is pretty good, but FemRyder's voice bugs me, it's so monotone and dragging, like she isn't really into it. I'll still do a complete FemRyder run at some point because normally this doesn't hold me back to at least give it a chance once.

Isn't the VO for Suvi actually Scottish though? Yes she is Scottish. I don't know why people insist on saying she doesn't sound Scottish! Never said she didn't sound Scottish. Even Scottish actors/actresses have exaggerated their accent in the media just so they come across as sounding legitimately Scottish. One of the worst Scottish accents I've heard and it's regularly mocked here in Scotland is from LuLu and she's Scottish. She over does it.

So far I've enjoyed Sara as much as Femshep. The real down fall of this game though, is the awful dialogue.
