I started with a custom Sara, and I lucked into a young teeny build that exactly fitted how Fryda did her voice. I think Tom's work only suits the default Scot build. That voice coming from my custom Scott just doesn't work.
Of the two, Fryda's acting fit better with the scenes than Tom's did. I think voice acting isn't as easy as it seems.

Another of these threads. Both Fryda and Tom are excellent. That's why they got the roles.

I liked them both The actors did a very good job and both voices fit my characters well. My female Ryder took the logical choices and my male Ryder is taking the casual choices with some mixing on both. Now Jaal's VO drives me up the wall and in my second playthrough can only take him when absolutely needed. Jaal: STAY STRONG AND CLEAR! Ryder: Oh my god why are you yelling it's like quieter than death in here. Jaal: Why does your kind use some disturbing idioms? Ryder: I don't think that's really an idiom...

Think it comes down to preference thing. I absolutely couldn't stand male shepards voice(when many preferred him over ten shep), I considered it bland, boring, etc etc where as femshep had fire to what she says, was passionate, etc etc. i haven't even given male Ryder a chance since I went with fem Ryder off the bat and was hooked, I saw no need to experiment when I had already found the voice that worked just fine. Yeah, it's amazing what can irritate one person can be an entirely enjoyable experience for the next person. Male Shepard, I preferred for the same reason you preferred female Shepard. I can't make up my mind up about "Suvi". I'm Scottish and if there's one thing I can't stand in games is a forced/exaggerated Scottish accent. Like the one we got in DA:I in the Hissing Wastes (the scout we stumble upon). One of the most awful Scottish accents I have ever heard in any game. Dude. Suvi's vo is from Glasgow. That's the heart of scotland.

Scottish accents vary considerably too, some you might hear you wouldn't even think were Scottish in the first place.

I love the male ryder voicing but I think with some of the lines sarcastic can come off douchey. I don't think it is specifically him as much as the fact that some of those lines, women can get away with saying and not sounding like a douche where with a guy, they can't do that. I think also, after playing MET both sexes and both sexes here, I am convinced that due to the nature of the writing for the protags, I think the female VOs will probably always be better because a male is always going to approach it differently. Women tend to have more range and it generally doesn't come off badly. But with guys if they utilize range too much people don't like it. If they don't utilize it enough, people don't like it. Mark Meer kind of had a problem with this. In ME1 he was very flat, but playing it now I can't really see how he could have played it like Jennifer Hale did. And because of that, she became a favorite for many. But really, he was just playing it as classic military I think. Jennifer played it less about classic military and more about how femshep responds to things in general. That changed how so many of her lines came across. Renegade femshep is amazing because of this.

Okay, my full VA preferences for the voiced Bioware's protagonists: ME/DA:F!Shepard = M!Shepard F!Inquisitor=M!Inquisitor (American) M!Ryder >F!Ryder M!Hawke >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> F!Hawke SWTOR:M!Agent >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> F!Agent* M!BH*** = F!BH M!Consular** <<<<<<<< F!Consular M!Inquisitor >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>F!Inquisitor M!Knight = F!Knight M!Trooper>F!Trooper M!Smuggler <F!Smuggler**** M!Warrior = F!Warrior * worst female protagonist voice ever ** worst male protagonist voice ever *** best male protagonist voice ever **** best female protagonist voice ever Haha, I see you really don't like Jo Wyatt, since she gave her voice to both Female Agent and Female Hawke. I, on the other hand, absolutely adore this voice and I could never play Male Hawke. Preferences, hehe. But your post reminded me of one thing - Female Sith Warrior. Jesus, this voice was SO GOOD. It's my absolutely favorite female voice in any game. I don't know if the voice actress is so good in other works, but Sith Female Warrior is just The Dream to me. Such a strong voice. As for the Male Ryder, personally from what I've heard it seems OK to me, though I always play female characters first. However my girlfriend plays as a dude 90% of the time and she actually hated Male Ryder's voice. She started again as a Female Ryder and she likes it a lot more.

I started my play-through as male Ryder and deleted it after about 10 hrs. Just couldn't stand it anymore so I went with Fem Ryder. She was a little more tolerable, but still... I think it's more the writing than anything. Crap in=crap out no matter who is doing the VO.

Wasn't a big fan of scott. But All of bioware's games that I have played (the ME trilogy and the dragon age games) I prefer the female VA. I am not a big fan of male ryder but he isn't as bad as the male VA for DAI. My favorite male VA lead in any Bio game is M!Hawke's, fo sho.

Isn't the VO for Suvi actually Scottish though? Katy Townsend was born in Glasgow, so yes. I'm from Glasgow, Scotland and Suvi sounds fine, I doubt it is exactly how she would sound in RL but she sounds authentic enough to me. It's not a broad accent, but if it was, people would struggle to understand. I do sometimes think that scottish people can sound off to other scots because they are moderating their accent to be understood. I guess that is probably the case with any representation of a regional accent. I think the voice acting was mostly great, there was one npc that seemed to be voiced by a plank of wood, but other than that I thought the cast were excellent. The face animations did let the performances down somewhat, which is a shame.

So far I've enjoyed Sara as much as Femshep. The real down fall of this game though, is the awful dialogue. Agreed, I thought the VA's performances were fine for the most part. Not Jen Hale or Ali Hillis great, but good enough. The writing though, ugh. The whole 'funny sitcom' vibe from start to finish is just really grating. It's funny how opinions differ. I always hated the weird way Liara talked and disliked the character because of it. As far as protagonists go, F!Ryder has the best voice actor in the mass effect and dragon age series, I think. And I love my Ryder because of it. What I've heard so far of M!Ryder also sounds great.

It happens, but not often in BioWare games, and never with their leads, in my opinion. The OP speaks of a "huge gulf" that doesn't exist. They each demonstrated skill. I found each believable and likable. That's where the subjectivity comes into it. The skillful performance is undeniable, and can be assessed in accord with professional criteria. Liking or disliking their performances is a matter of taste.

Funny, I thought Tom Taylorson did a better job myself. Fryda isn't bad at all, but she's not as good as Hale was. Whereas Taylorson is way better than Meer was in ME1, and is easily as good as Meer in ME3.

I love them both and hope we get more Ryder in the second game. I was disappointed we didn't get to hear them talk to each other more often in MEA. Since they're friends IRL they have great (platonic!) chemistry.
Fryda made me forget to miss Jen Hale, which is something I didn't think would be possible going into this game. I like Ryder so much more than I liked Hawke or the Inquisitor. I'm going to be really disappointed if they switch protagonists again.
