I liked ME1 but didn't warm up to it for about 10 hours or so, but I knew I was addicted to the series when I had to replay ME2 right after finishing it. And then ME3 and the end . . . ing.

Boy this escalated quickly.
ME1 is like the Ocarina of Time of the Mass Effect Series in a way. It was incredible for its time with the story and music being timeless. MEA, like Breath of the Wild, is superior in gameplay mechanics with a wider array of colorful characters, but it has a slimmer main story with a not as memorable soundtrack.
MEA and BOTW are by far my favorite Mass Effect and Zelda games to play, but ME1 and Ocarina of Time still remain as my favorite for the overall impact of the game. Both games defined the series (for 3D gaming)

Nope. ME 1 is far better than MEA in nearly every way. The only thing from MEA I wish I had in ME1 was the charge/melee opeions. The best thing MEA did was make me want to ME 1 again, which I am. And loving every moment of it far more than the drudgery of MEA. I love me1 and everything but I have to call you out on your rose-tinted Nostalgia goggles. ME1 is only better in pacing, general plot and with the villian....that’s it.

The charcters in ME1 are wooden as hell, they are some of the most thinly written characters in any Bioware game I have played. None of them begin to pop and feel real to me until ME2. The fact that you and I disagree fundamentally on thise proves that it is not an objective statement, and a matter of personal attachment and preference. Also I can't judge any of the MT games alone before I play them as a trilogy. I have no idea how I would respond to any of them as a single gaming expereince. I do know I think the character writting ME1 sucks. To each their own. The characters in ME1 are real not exaggerated comic book, one liner spewing, attempting meme machine, childs who need Shepard/Ryder to solve all their mundane/idiotic/daddy issues. the characters in me1 have little to know growth or develompent. Wrex was the stand out. So bw in turn made a ship full of wrex's in me2.

I'm fine with the amount of praise l ME1 gets. Its the ME2 praise that gets me and I beat that game 20+ times. I don't see why it's the Holy Grail of the series. I like ME3 and MEA so much more. Simple. It has Harbinger. ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL. It has the Honorable Mr. Rupert Gardner, the greatest chef in the universe. It has TIM. excellent character voiced by an excellent VA. It has Miranda. A very good squadmate. It has the SR2 with Cerberus colors. It has the suicide mission. It has Mordin singing. And my Shepard gets to work with Cerberus. outstanding

Shopping for him on the Citadel is the best quest in the game, better than the suicide mission.

I realy don't get why Mass Effect 1 is praised like it's the holy grail or something. Yes, the story is damn good and it set the foundation for imo the 2nd best Sci-Fi universe that exists (sorry, not topping W40k). But that's it. The gameplay is atrocious, controls are sluggish as f*ck, the graphics can get pretty ugly for a 2007 game at some points, the sound quality isn't that great either... The dialoge system sometimes has 3 options but Shepard will say the same line, no matter what you pick - nice way of making it look like there are a lot of options. And who thought putting a bouncy ball in a game, calling it a tank and making the player bounce arround the most boring and repetitive planets possible was a good idea? Oh and biotics, because we want to make the game a ragdollfest! And elevators. I first played it in 2011 and stopped after about 5h because it just wasn't fun and I didn't play it again until 2014 when I finally decided to play the trilogy. Stangely enough I played it like a dozen times. But only because I wanted to play the entire trilogy, so I just rushed through ME1 on easy. I play the others on insanity, btw. Apard from the story, the game dosen't realy have that much going for it, even some characters are kinda boring until ME2. The story does compensate for a lot of that, but the fact that I put the game down and ignored it for 3 years says a lot (I usually don't put a game down that easy). Here is the thing, I agree. ME1 has really boring characters, the combat was to clunky and so was the inventory system. There was no gay romance and the CC wasnt the best. ME:A did all of this but nor perfectly either and had a huge boring main story with huge maps with nothing. I to this day can still play several PTs of ME1/2/3 but cannot bring myself to even finish a second one for ME:A. The main story in a RPG is crucial without it the other aspects are fluff only.

- Vastly improved combat over the original, including a better difficulty curve. - The best class balance in the series, with hybrids that don't overshadow their parent classes. - A fantastic cast of characters, some of which stand among the best BW has ever produced. - Some excellent individual missions. - The Suicide Mission (not counting the last boss) which is one of the best payoffs of any game I've ever played.
On the other hand: - A story that does little to advance the trilogy overall - Tedious planet scanning - Limited RPG aspects - Fairly crappy equipment system.
For my money, the positives far, far outweighed the negatives.
Mass Effect 1 almost destroyed Mass Effect before we even got to the good bits.
That's true for me. On my initial playthrough of the game trying to explore every planet and collect all that useless crap got so frustrating and time-consuming that I almost walked away from it. I can't imagine how cold and empty my gaming life would be now if I had.

The gameplay improved with each subsequent game of the OT, but I think ME1 had the best narrative and atmosphere.

You can disagree all you want with it, but in end, you have no say whether they continue to praise it or not.
