I'm fine with the amount of praise l ME1 gets. Its the ME2 praise that gets me and I beat that game 20+ times. I don't see why it's the Holy Grail of the series. I like ME3 and MEA so much more.
- Vastly improved combat over the original, including a better difficulty curve. - The best class balance in the series, with hybrids that don't overshadow their parent classes. - A fantastic cast of characters, some of which stand among the best BW has ever produced. - Some excellent individual missions. - The Suicide Mission (not counting the last boss) which is one of the best payoffs of any game I've ever played.
On the other hand: - A story that does little to advance the trilogy overall - Tedious planet scanning - Limited RPG aspects - Fairly crappy equipment system.
For my money, the positives far, far outweighed the negatives.
Mass Effect 1 almost destroyed Mass Effect before we even got to the good bits.
That's true for me. On my initial playthrough of the game trying to explore every planet and collect all that useless crap got so frustrating and time-consuming that I almost walked away from it. I can't imagine how cold and empty my gaming life would be now if I had.
I know a guy that still wont tpuch any of the other games after ME1. Those first few hours can kill it hard for some people.

After reading this and other threads, it's clear why ME:A is so bland. That's what the fans want. You don't know what fans want. Nobody does. And BioWare are crazy brave for trying to figure it all out.

People need to stop praising MEA, the main story is just ok, the other 90% of the game is boring, tedious fetch quests exploration is boring, lifeless planets Don't forget the fucked up MP, the hilariously bad dialogue, awful animations, another crappy vehicle.

You can disagree all you want with it, but in end, you have no say whether they continue to praise it or not. Considering the tone the OP sets in this thread, the comment you're responding to is pretty fair lol. Like, why do we "need" to do anything? I'm gonna continue to feel how I feel about this shit anyway. Ain't no rando on the web going to stop me with their puny words.

You don't know what fans want. Nobody does. And BioWare are crazy brave for trying to figure it all out. I agree and the fans kick them in the teeth each time they try. I am to the point that I wish BioWare would do what other developers seem to do easily. Ignore their fanbase, for I think part of the problem I had with Andromeda is they tried to do too much to clear the checklist of "things that Mass Effect needs according to the BSN".

Well, putting aside what one "thinks", wouldn't Space Gilligan's Island suggest that they got stranded there by accident? After all, the 3 hour tour wasn't supposed to be a one way trip. [/pedantry]

ME1 is far from the best;on that I agree. I think ME3 is the best ME game from the trilogy. I like ME3 as well. I think ME2 was more fun. Can't really say why? Maybe the mood of ME3 detracted somewhat from the pure fun factor, but ME3 was definitely the most emotional. It's the only one that made tears come out of my eyes at points. But that emotion was earned on the back of ME2. By itself ME3, although packaged nicely, would be a empty shell. Which is why I could never consider it the best. But I can still understand why you would consider it the best.

I would have only given ME1 a 6 or 7 out of 10 at the time. Short game but with an interesting story and world, immersive cutscenes, crappy dialogue wheel, sub par combat, sub par vehicle gameplay, a lot of immersion breaking reused assets, and lots of padding I ignored. I wasn't hyped for ME2 at all, only picked it up given the reviews. The improvements they made blew me away. That kind of is the story for a lot of people, I suspect. The first game was good, had really good ideas...but the second game was eye opening in what BioWare can do with the series, and this story line. I know it was for me, I played Mass Effect twice before I picked up Mass Effect 2...then I played it six more times for various playthroughs just to see what happens in Mass Effect 2 and later Mass Effect 3. I have done four trilogy breakthroughs since. I'd go as far to say that the Mass Effect franchise wouldnt have the popularity or have had the legs it has if it was not for Mass Effect 2. ME2 is the pillar that keeps the entire series up, fuels it to this day imo. Its in the same vein as The Empire Strikes Back regarding the popularity of Star Wars, as without TESB there is no Star Wars as we know it basically, it elevated things to a whole new level. Without it you'd just have a groundbreaking first film or game, but nothing greater or beyond that. Without ME2 there is no Mass Effect. Hell ultimately we even wouldnt be here right now on this forum if it wasnt for that game. Its just such a shame that the Bioware who made that game no longer exists.

I don't think many gamers praising space Gilligan's island have played the first one. I've played ME1 50 times over the last ten years. And yet, overall I enjoyed ME:A more than ME1. IMO, ME:A has better characters, the main story holds up better under scrutiny, and the combat is lightyears ahead of ME1 (which was bad even in 2007). I only play ME1 now if I want to start a completely new Shepard.

What really bugs me about ME2 is that it has oodles of ingredients that would build up into my favorite game, like the atmosphere and the cast of colorful violent misfits, but then gets bogged down by the reaper plot and fails to really advance it. If this was some other point in the Milky Way's history and we were instead fighting some Independence Day type aliens that lived in the galactic core, I probably would have enjoyed it more. At least then we wouldn't have that godawful human reaper. Harbinger was a disposable muppet with anyway, and his voice was greatly inferior to Sovereign. Starchild was a fool to make that thing its representative.

The only reason I liked ME2 is the bromance with Garrus, and I got to bang Tali. Mostly everything else I am kind of meh on.

When I play ME2, primarily the thing I look forward to most are some of the loyalty missions, like Mordin's and Grunt's, and LotSB, which will always be one of the best things in the entire trilogy for me. Save for Zaeed and Kasumi's loyalty missions, the other DLC content are kind of eh…Arrival is important so I always play that, but it's kind of mediocre when you really think about its story.

I don't really think people need to stop praising ME1... you can praise a game and still recognize its flaws. The Mass Effect series has many, many flaws. So does Andromeda. But I find the ingredients I enjoyed in the previous games are present in Andromeda, with some improvements in areas and different flavors in others.
Maybe the OP means the original three shouldn't be gazed at with rose-colored glasses. I agree with that.

That's all it has. The level design is atrociously lazy. There's no effort to make the levels feel like they occupy a larger whole. And I played it 6 times, but I'm just saying, when it come to levels, BioWare is among the worst I've played. And they still haven't figured it out.
