I understand all the words just fine, I have no fucking clue what he's talking about half the time. Bad bad writing? Or reader incomprehension. Hard to tell which without evidence. I still don't know which Liam sentences are supposed to be unintelligible. Do you have an example? I guess the only way to really know is to just post some random Liamsisms in the thread to get an idea and see how many declare their noodles officially scratched. It's like he's trying to speak to us. I know it!

you can activate the subtitles Yep. That's what I do. You almost have to anyway because of audio glitches when you are not facing the person talking to you directly. Way to go Bioware, I disabled subtitles back when I got my first sound card in Windows 3 days and haven't used them in any game until ... MEA. Ok maybe I get it now Bioware is going all retro on us

Ha. As a Yorkshire Woman, I doubt these people would understand us, if they have this much trouble understanding a clear Southerner accent like Liam's. Yorkshire eh? Wrong side of the Pennines if you ask me.

Well, Liam does use the HUSTL acronym before realizing that Ryder doesn't actually know what it is, but he explains it a few seconds later. I don't see anything else.

Luke Kristjansson, the mastermind behind Jacob and Sera Minsc, Jaheira, Jolee Bindo, Grunt, Kaidan, Aveline and Carver. He was also lead designer/Writer on Baldurs Gate 2, wrote several main quest for KotoR, Mass Effect (original), and the Dragon Age franchise. Just like to bring it up in case someone is trying to tell me he is a bad writer because of Sera and Liam. His good work is a long, long time ago.

I can understand the words and sentences on their own, but I don't get the message. It's incoherent. What's he talking about? what's the point? No fucking clue.

You know? There's a piece of game art that shows Liam embracing fem-Ryder, and it's beautiful. If only they had made Liam a man instead of a dick brain, that art could have been a gaming moment thousands would have pursued.

Am I just to American or something? All his sentences just seem like jiberish to me. It might even bother me if he had anything worth saying. But still it is horrible. I'm not a native speaker, so I thought it's just me who doesn't get what he's saying in these conversations. Quite often it seems like word salad. Does he even have a british accent? I was surprised when reading that he's supposed to be from London.

When I read London I rather expect something like Phil or Robert Glenister. For me he always sounded East coast American

London all by itself has shit ton of accents based on race/location/class/age, all of which are valid 'London' accents. Liam's accent is 100% accurate for a modern young black London male most likely with afro caribbean grandparents.

From the Midwest US here, and I've understood everyone perfectly well in this game so far, and I'm pretty sure i'm near the end (still my first playthrough), no subtitles. But I know there are loads of regional accents in the UK, all equally wonderful to my ears The only people I haven't been able to understand, obviously, are the kett and angaran languages before SAM or whatever translates them through the magical 'translator' (plot) device. Other times, I haven't heard all of some conversations in the rover, because of a bug that happens when you fast travel.. it's like they talk during the loading screen, so it cuts off part of it. And there are times when one character is too far away, and the sound gets drowned out by other noise..that's annoying, too. I'll admit, Liam's not my favorite character in the Mass Effect series, but I don't hate him. I like his banter with Jaal, and when Drack shuts him down and treats him like a child, lol

you can activate the subtitles I fucking despise subtitles. They ruin the tiny rest of the immersion. It took me three playthroughs to understand what his quest was actually about.

I'm half-Russian\half-Ukrainian. And I understand Liam. Must be something wrong with me... By the way, I absolutely love the way Luke pays attention to his characters' speech. Not many characters can be recognised by an 'out-of-context' quote, even the good ones. Yoda Master knows, important the phrasing to the characterisation is!

I don't even try to make much sense out of Liam's incoherent gibberish. His actions speak louder than his incoherent gibberish. Liam is a traitor, as simple as that and endangers the whole MEA mission 5 seconds after encountering a new alien species. It's entrainment that short time feelgood via goody two shoes is more important than any reasoning at all.
The protagonist in this game does much the same under the guise of honesty. Being responsible and being held responsible does not mean shouting it all over the rooftops from the top of your lungs.
Luke Kristjansson is indeed a magician craftsman whether that is good or bad is in the eye of the beholder. From my point of view, there are too many shenanigans inserted in MEA, to the point of great irritation.

Christ, people already dislike Liam, making him a scouser would be overkill. Now what we need is a character with a thick Yorkshire accent. Subtitles would be mandatory. See now I'm picturing a companion in the mould of Sean Bean from Lady Chatterley being all rough and northern at me. I also can't hear the word scouser without my brain automatically adding 'eh eh calm down calm down' silently to itself. You have to do the hand movements and get a perm as well for it to be authentic.
