You can enter College by persuading or by casting apprentice level spell. And that's it, from this point you can finish all related short quests, and suddenly you are Arch-Mage with no knowledge in magic?? What a design! Yeah... In regards to faction quests The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim were the weakest in the last three titles, I can not comment on titles older than The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. In Skyrim you can literally do one or two quests and suddenly it is decided you are worthy of learning the dark secret of the Companion's council. You can become the Arch-Mage of the Mage's Guild with a full fledged fighter. You do not even need to cast a spell to be allowed entrance in the college, just use a shout. The only factions in the base game that are even close to being polished are the Dark Brotherhood and The Thieves Guild which I suspect that is only because they were they most liked in the previous title The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion which treated each faction quest-line with care and developed them as their own standalone story-lines. Even Morrowind did it better than Skyrim and each rank demanded that your character met a statistic requirement before advancing. Bethesda took a huge leap back. The story telling has progressively become weaker from Morrowind. Weapon and spell selection has been trimmed down and streamlined, spell crafting... gone. And combat... still 'floaty', weightless. Every character looks like they just started swinging a sword for the first time, even supposed veterans. Finisher animations rarely line up properly and end up looking ridiculous. Like "oh, I will grab the air around this lunging and love tap the air on his other side with my sword, yeah, that will end him rightly!" And the A.I... Without a mod of some kind it is just down right pitiful, even Call of Duty bots are smarter. "Hey, Bob just fell over and there is an arrow in his neck. Must have been the wind. Nevermind that arrow, or that we are in this tunnel, or this person standing in front of me in this narrow hallway. They don't exist, nope! Just my imagination." But hey, let us praise our lord and savior Todd Howard and defecate on a much smaller company with not even a fraction of the history or experience that Bethesda / Zenimax can boast like CD Projekt Red who despite all odds, even being told by the author of the book series that they were gonna fail and make no profit, came out with a trilogy that sold and has taken more steps forward then back as each title came out. I mean, if folks here find their latest release to absolute trash and unacceptable then I should be seeing a news feed on Facebook regarding a angry mob outside Bioware and Bethesda waving pitchforks and torches. Actually Dark Brotherhood and The Thieves Guild quests are the worse. They are full of holes and contradictions. But the biggest is killing of Emperor which is Dark Brotherhood quest line: Here is about Thieves guild: www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=14422And then someone tells me how Skyrim world makes sense?? Also some people will say "well it's Bethesda, what did you expect"? Well play some of their earlier games and then talk with me.

So DAI even has the scanner mechanic too?
Speaking of the scanner mechanic, it completely ruins the loot system of TW3. Without it you can barely tell what is loot or not. And when you turn it on you're overwhelmed with the amount of shiny shiny to collect. What are these shiny things you're collecting? I don't know, they all looked like orange blobs to me. Collect them all then sort them through this game's nightmare UI item management and loot box that always way out of the way. Fun! No flaws here, just the beautiful smell of Geralt's butt fumes.

Nothing. Completely nothing. You're choosing what's enjoyable for you and what's not, it's your right. And those people who would tell you, that something must be wrong with you, that you playing the game in a wrong way, or that you lost great player experience by not playing TW3? Well, they're morons. The problem starts, when people like OP acting like their own tastes are objective facts. That's because the things I'm talking about can be very objectively observed. Stuff like game play and how open world and it's exploration are handled, looting, item managing, etc. And I've explained myself over the course of this thread as to why I think TW3 really bombs here. But no one here defending TW3 wants to talk about the obvious flaws, do they. Because they've got their nose puckered up to high up Geralt's butt, that's why. Why if Andromeda really had great graphics and story like TW3, it would have been GotY just like TW3 too. Because TW3 proves without a doubt that's all majority of RPGers need. Since TW3 and Andromeda are very similar (with Andromeda even having more interesting game play, among other things), the only main and big difference is quality of story and and graphics. That's why one is GotY and one isn't. Simple objective observation. The things you mention are of no consequence, given that the execution and delivery of the comparable elements in each game mark them out as completely different experiences. As such, you continue to make no point at all.

Or people can just avoid the missions labeled "Task:". It's pretty easy to determine which missions are required to complete the game and which ones are there if you want to explore the world further. If only... I'm avoiding 99% of all Tasks and still feel like rage quitting every time I want to do a "normal" quest because the quest design is the most infuriating, insulting waste of my time I have ever come across. Most quests are about finding and scanning stuff all over the map and several planets. And I can't even do loyalty missions until I've wasted a bazillion hours doing all the mind-numbing steps. Everything is always ON HOLD, I'm so very fed up with this game after 70h... Bioware Montreal is either completely incompetent or this is a very insidious padding tactic because if you take all the planet hopping and revisiting the tempest for no reason out of the game, you'd be done very quickly with this game. Most quests are so boring, I get angry for wasting my time A LOT. One of the worst offenders is the drive core hunt. "Oops, the core is not here anymore. It was but a minute ago. Keep chasing it." This shit isn't fun. It's an insult, a fucking joke. A sorry excuse to make people drive all over these deserted boring planets. I went from initial shock to acceptance... then briefly enjoying the game on Eos to now pretty much hating Montreal for this gameplay fuckery. I go to Kadara for a one minute conversation with Peebee for her eventual LM. Now it's on hold. Now I'm supposed to go to Elaaden. But on the Tempest I am told Vetra wants to see me on Kadara WHERE I JUST GOT BACK FROM. No, I did not get this email before when I was still on the Tempest before going to Kadara. Either the triggers are all fucked up or this is on purpose to make people revisit planets over and over and over again. Just for a short conversation. Why do I even have to take vidcom shit on the Tempest while my crewmates can chirp stuff over the comm while I'm out running through the desert? I lost track of the number of times I did something on a planet only to be asked to go back tehre the second I'm back on the Tempest. I cannot understand how this is fun to anybody. CDPR does not treat their players like that. In fact, no other developer ever led me around in circles like that for even the smallest most boring quests. *ragemode off* I've completed 40% of the game in 22 hrs...there are really only a few essential missions and the rest is there to do them if you want to. The main planets can get to 100% viability with just doing Vaults, Main Vault, and main planet missions...but you don't even have to get to 100% viability The rest is SAM Node Memories, Loyalty Missions, and Main Missions and everything can be done in 50-60 hrs so, yeah, no reason to be near 70hrs unless you want that.. As for TW3, after 2 PT's I was done...and the only reason I did 2 PT's was because I completed the game before the DLC's were released and I had already bought the season pass on a discount. I used it as opportunity to romance Yen as opposed to Triss, take a different route with Ciri but, in the end, the results didn't change much. Geralt's response was usually a difference between grumpy and less grumpy, the missions became "ooh, which will I used now, Witcher Smell or Witcher Vision?", and the story is pretty basic but man its got grit.

Heh, for those who measure the quality of faction quest lines by their length, Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood are at least 50% better than College or Companions.
Do you have a link to Dark Brotherhood analysis, too, or is the killing of Emperor the same as your wooden Dragonsreach?

Just look at the two "hilarious bug" videos I put up and the difference in attitude from the same group (Gameranx) over the same sort of bugs present in the two games. The bias against Bioware becomes immediately evident. TW3 is all just awesomely funny... ME:A on the other hand "is a mess" in their words. There's "presentation and details" for you. One other reason I quit TW3 is that I was getting increasingly weirder issues with my saves. The game was starting to lag a lot (screen going blurry every time I selected a line of dialogue and the next line taking an increasingly longer time to load). I cleared by Xbox One cache and that helped for a bit. Still, the last save I did actually showed a save date and time in the future (and my Xbox One clock was reading correctly for both date and time as set via its internet connection). You never hear such things mentioned when people discuss TW3... you only hear how good it is. It has issues... it's not perfect... and it is a very, very extremely long game. Too long for ME's style of story. That's too bad you experienced bugs and weird save issues. Those were non-existent for me on PC with TW3, but I can certainly see how that would impact your viewpoint. For example, because I experienced virtually no bugs with TW3 on PC, and experienced several with ME:A, my experience suggests ME:A was not as clean of a game. I also spent a considerable amount of time on the CDPR forums after TW3 was released (as I have also done on here since ME:A was released). I've personally seen more bugs and bug complaints unique to ME:A than I ever did with TW3. I've also seen more articles about ME:A's issues than I have TW3. I have no reason to believe that this is bias-driven analysis. I just don't think ME:A is as good of a game, overall. Honestly, though, is that really so bad? This whole conversation reminds me of how some people in the movie industry think Rotten Tomatoes is the downfall of modern cinema. People see a movie and will leave bad reviews, thus assisting in poor box office performances. But, that's a silly excuse. People giving their opinion isn't the problem - people making bad movies is the problem. (I'm not saying ME:A is a bad game, to be clear.) One thing about bugs... TW3 was released 2 years ago... so when I started playing it, I wasn't expecting to still be encountering those sorts of bugs seen, for example, in the "hilarious" videos... but I did. The save/clock issue simply baffles me... has me worried, in fact, about my system more than the individual game. With ME:A, I intentionally waited to start playing it for the bugs to get ironed out. I think it's just a smart move in this day and age where the games are getting more and more complex and have to be designed to work on more varied PC's and other platforms. The odds of bugs being present at release are just there... regardless of how careful the companies are... and then add into it the business pressures subsidiaries of major companies are always under (in any industry I've seen)... waiting a few months for a few patches to drop just makes sense to me now. I'd rather stem my enthusiasm for a new game for a bit than go about speculating complaints about a game for months prior to release just to avoid being "disappointed" (which is what many of the forum posters claimed they were doing. My basic issue with TW3 though is about my inability to connect adequately with the story because of the huge, open-world structure of the game... and it is a story better designed for that sort of piece-meal telling than Bioware's stories that are about character development and character changes over time. It's an advantage to TW3 that Geralt is Geralt... his personality and character being defined by CDPR in detail in the entry written by Dandelion that the player can read in the game... as opposed to Shepard... whose personality (either renegade or paragon or a bit of both) is defined by the player over the course of the entire Trilogy. That sort of character development is not conducive to being jumbled up and mashed into a plot that can be told in any sequence. Even TW3 has some sequencing issues (e.g. side quests that fail to initiate if not done in the right order (e.g. the Dirty Funds, Deserter Gold, and Temerian Valuables Treasure Hunts in White Orchard... If the player does not do Dirty Funds before doing Deserter Gold, the little note that starts the Dirty Funds quest won't trigger it (this is mentioned in their Wiki). Another one I never got to is the Gangs of Novigrad quest, which according to the Wiki, will fail if not done in precisely the right order in conjunction with the Get Junior quest. If one digs, there is evidence online that TW3 has its share of problems... but people are so busy praising it and begging other companies to copy it... that those issues are just not making it into the light enough so that the companies copying the format can avoid the problems that also came with it.

I ran into a lot of bugs when it first came out then they started patching it and it got better, plus they added features like storage, adjustments to inventory, etc (sound familiar)
Its all about timing...Dragon Age Inquisition won GOTY awards but gets shit on retroactively because its not "The Witcher 3", despite the fact it came out after DA:I and gets sucked off constantly and is held up as some industry standard that all games should adhere to despite its obvious and overlooked flaws at release.

"Important ones" by whose definition... The action is clearly labled "Loot" in all cases, except for growing herbs that are labeled "gather ingredients." I've found nice usuable swords and armor inside "orange-blob" loot chests; whereas, going after only the red ones left me way short on any of the materials I needed to craft the assorted diagrams I gathered, many of which were either way above my level or way below it anyways. Without "looting," the only way I saw myself ever getting enough crowns to purchase the ingredients needed to craft the "red chest" swords and to keep them repaired (because the little repair kits come in the orange-colored loot chests) was to play gwent for hours and hours and hours at 20 crowns a pop... not to mention again that the bulk of Geralt's food supply (other than raw meat from killing wolves) comes in orange "loot" chests and the alcohol he needs to replenish his potions also comes from orange "loot" chests.

Important as in quest related, yes the the normal ones have stuff in them, but they're clearly delineated from the ones related to quests

I'm with you right up until you get to "CDPR does not treat their players like that" and then I review my impressions of TW3 where I felt I was needlessly running all over that map just to even find side quests at an appropriate level for my character, running back an forth between White Orchard and Velen because I didn't do Crow's Perch right away and, therefore, wasn't able to access my Stash except by going back to White Orchard and then when I did, the nearest fast travel post was a long jaunt through the entirety of Crow's Perch away from the stash (for no apparent reason at all other than being bloody inconvenient). The there was hopping all over the map to have gwent games with specific characters, hopping back and forth all over the map to join in the fist fights... and in the course of that constantly getting on and off the horse to stop and talk with this or that person along the roadway who had some shit task to do... that also wound up taking me all over the map (e.g. setting shrines upright). ME:A copied TW3 in lots of way... but the fandom overlooks it entirely when CDPR does it and trashes Bioware when they do it. When TW3 came out is was so much longer and had great setting quality... so people have lapped it right up... and then starting hammering on the other companies to make their games the same way... long, open, and hopping people around all over the map and allowing them to do the quests in any order... so that's what they got with ME:A... and now it frustrates the shit out of them. Bioware should have never followed TW3 down this huge, massive, open world path. Their style of story telling is about RPG'ing character personality development... and that style of story telling falls apart when subjected to an massive open-world template. Geralt is Geralt... his personality is basically set... the decisions that player makes do not forge a different personality for Geralt in the same way that making different decisions decided Shepard's personality. The decisions in TW3 usually only decide whether or not the NPC in that part of the story lives or dies (if lives, you get a cameo later on and if not, you don't). It's not about one company abusing it's fans and another one not... it's about the fact that different writing styles suit different genres of novels and others don't... and the same holds true for games. To me there is a big difference between putting artificial stops into even minor quests and tricking the player into chasing some random cargo or signal... and seeking out Gwent players. There is no way of knowing which MEA quest is another cheap chase game with little to no payoff. It this sort of lazy MMO shit was limited to tasks then I would be fine with it as extra content for those weird people who enjoy this sort of filler. But it feels like half of all quests are like this. And that the loyalty missions take forever to even start is a crime. It takes all enjoyment out of it for me. And then the actual mission is 30min at best. MEA is the equivalent of working out an hour in the gym for a tiny candy bar. Sadly the loyalty missions are among the better things of the game. So if you skip them you're left with almost nothing... W3 has A LOT of side content. That is correct. And fast travel is not ideal because you need to reach the markers first. MEA has a decent system there actually. The thing is I found 90% of all minor side quests fairly enjoyable. At least there was a monster to kill. Or even one to befriend. There was story and atmosphere. What do the majority of MEA quests offer? Finding data pads and scanning stuff. Great... there are no engaging plot developments in chasing a signal. You drive for minutes through nothingness to a location. You scan that location. It's not what you're looking for 80% of the time. You drive some more. You scan some more. What the hell?!? And when you take that quest you don't know if its going to be one of those cases where a simple"get this" or "fins this" turns into an ordeal. If these side quests were over with quickly at least. But nope. It's disgusting padding. There ARE a lot of time sink elements in W3. But they aren't the quests. It's mostly the crafting and for completionists the bandit camp clearing and other question marks. THEY are padding. But then again you know they are. I did almost all things in W3 gladly. They were fun. Enjoyed the combat a lot (no idea why so many people say it was boring) and was looking forward to fighting the monsters guarding treasure. LOVED Gwent. I still play the physics card game with a friend once or twice a month. What drove me nuts was the Witcher gear crafting. That took so many hours. Never had enough money and materials. Had to loot and craft and sell and buy over and over. They were a pain in the ass. Finding the schematics too. But at least they all told a story. One was quite horrific... The animals in MEA are a joke. The fiends are dangerous but the others? They are the same everywhere too. The architect fight had me almost rage quite because again it's designed to take forever just because. Took me 30min or so on Eos at level 15 or so because the no damage period was so ridiculously long. I thought the fight had glitched at some point... no autosave between phases. EVERYTHING about MEA is annoying to me. If you feel like that way about W3, I can't really understand it unless you simply don't like open world. Not sure I do actually. But I can respect that. I see absolutely nothing of W3 in MEA. I see a repeat of DAI with some improvements to the open world but major disappointment in most areas. Bioware sucks at open world. And most open world games suffer from fetch quest spam. But this has nothing to do with W3 in particular. I'll say though that I gave up on W1 after 4 hours because in that time period all I did was run around a small area trying to get into the city. It was literally go from person A to B, back to A, to C, back to A, B... I never made it into the city. It was so annoying and boring. But hey, joke's on me. Been putting up with this shit in MEA for 70h and counting because it's Bioware and I feel obligated to beat the game. Imo CDPR learned their lesson, Bioware didn't. Will never touch another game made by Montreal. But I guess they won't be making another one anyway. I'm not sad.

And I'll never touch TW3 again while I'm on my 4th PT in ME:A. If it's annoying overall, I'd suggest not playing it again after you're done and hopefully you can get some nice trade-in value before its too late.

Without "looting," the only way I saw myself ever getting enough crowns to purchase the ingredients needed to craft the "red chest" swords and to keep them repaired (because the little repair kits come in the orange-colored loot chests) was to play gwent for hours and hours and hours at 20 crowns a pop. Important as in quest related, yes the the normal ones have stuff in them, but they're clearly delineated from the ones related to quests I don't believe that's the case in every chest... in White Orchard where I believe, you need some specific supplies from the cabin by the lake to complete the Devil in the Well contract (i.e. to make the specter oil instructed in the tutorial). Somehow, I sincerely doubt that the people saying it's not that hard to complete the game without doing any looting whatsoever are actually playing it that way... without glitching or modding the game somewhere.

Just get over it already. The loot system in TW3 is trash. Pure. Trash. beyond leveled gear and weapon degradation being plagues wherever they manifest themselves, I just don't see how. Quest related loot is specifically marked out, and if you can't figure out what non-quest gear is to be looted, then I don't know what to tell you. Want monster items, go to monster nests, want crafting equipment, bandit camps are a good idea, treasure hunts and witcher schematic quests are also pretty self explanatory.
