Kotaku reporter has some extra bad news

The one thing that makes me think this game got more backlash than it deserved, was that steaming pyle of gameplay that was Dragon Age 2 and how it's release went down compared to Andromeda.


In my opinion, MEA was a far better game in terms of everything except writing, yet people still accepted that there were quality aspects of DA2 to be enjoyed, and that they would just have to improve the sequel. People were mad that the game was so tiny in scope and literally copy and pasted the same 6 environments for your entire play through, but we realized sometimes shitty developement situations happen and they can always be rectified.

The reaction to MEA was not that. It was not an honest critique of a decent game that needed more time and improvement. It was people taking turns kicking a car crash victim while laughing about it. Now no one gets anything from the IP, for a long, long time it looks like, and there are portions of blame to be shared by the gaming media and fanbase, as well as Bioware, though a lot of people don't see it that way.

Times are different now, and shittier games than Andromeda have deservedly been giving a pass for worse offenses in the past. That is what bothers me so much in this situation. This was just people piling on for the sake of sensationalism and it literally killed a brand that could have been improved upon. Hell look at the difference in game between DA2 and DAI. That probably would have been the same level of improvement from MEA to it's sequel since the engine problems have been ironed out that Montreal was having, and they would know exactly which aspects of the game needed improving.

I for one feel bad for Bioware, regardless of the mistakes they made with this title, and for the fans who still found an awesome experience to grab on to and are now going to be denied more because other people's opinions had more weight than theirs.

I personally think it took just as much bad press to kill this franchise than it did with bad developement issues, and we will absolutely see this type of hyper polarization and hyperbolic reactions from future titles from other devs. The whole situation really irks my viewpoint on the gaming community as a whole.


I firmly believe that a gamer who in a few years plays Andromeda on a whim, not being aware of the shit storm that plagued it's release, will sit there after beating it wondering, "why did they never make a sequel or even a single piece of DLC for this game? That doesn't make any sense."
