More interesting news concerning the fate of that studio. It has been literally merged with EA Motive and remaining employees being moved to the studio to "help develop a new IP". EA Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen said, "We're building out a new studio in Montreal, as we've told everyone. And we've hired over 100 people for that studio that are brand new to EA. This is to build the new IP around Jade Raymond's team that she's been building. We brought our BioWare Montreal team into that same facility." The move means that BioWare studios have now been reduced to BioWare Edmonton with teams working most notably on Dragon Age 4 and Anthem, and BioWare Austin working primarily on Star Wars: The Old Republic. No further details were given and certainly no discussion was present about the fate of any DLC for Mass Effect: Andromeda or regarding the future of the Mass Effect series altogether. www.hardocp.com/news/2017/07/29/bioware_montreal_has_been_integrated_into_ea_motiveBioWare Montreal Has Been Integrated into EA Motive BioWare Montreal’s gamble with the Mass Effect franchise did not pay off, and the studio is still paying for it: leftover staff members have now been moved to EA’s Motive Studios, which is working alongside DICE on Battlefront II, as well as a brand-new IP. Anthem and MEA were worked on at the same time. DA4 is a long, long way away. So, who's to say BioWare Edmonton/Austin can't work on "small" sp dlc packs? That can be done in a much, much quicker time period then a full game would? Plus, only the hardcore fans know DA4 is actually being worked on-it's technically haven't even been officially revealed yet.

Just out of interest, why is Bioware Montreal the only studio who could produce DLC? You are correct in that assumption. There is nothing to say that another studio with in Bioware One could be or will be working on any DLC for the game at this time. And in fact it would be really great news if that was happening. But as of now with the current lack of news speculation is a rampant thing. I guess we will have to see what news will be released in the coming days.

Just out of interest, why is Bioware Montreal the only studio who could produce DLC? Indeed actually that is something that I thought for a bit of time, its a possibility that this is the very reason why edmonton is hiring right now, because the team has a lot of work to do if they intend to also create an MEA dlc. That might be the reason why Anthem was pushed back because edmonton has more job as of now.

Those news reports don't confirm to me that BioWare Montreal has been 'absorbed', simply that they are sharing the same office and helping out another division.

Indeed, working on a sequel requires tons of new assets and people are excepting way more new thing to come with it. A dlc is not as expensive, some new ennemy types, a couple of weapons, maybe some new power but nothing extremly huge. Nobody is excepting bright new graphics, huge 100 hours story, recreating the combat or skill three system, dlc are benefiting of the fondation already built. Creating dlc requires much less ressources than a full fledge game so there is no need for the whole team of edmonton or austin for this particular game's dlc.

Reddit user Qqlx made an interesting post concerning this:
"Bioware and Motive are EA subsidiaries. They are separate legal entities for tax, regulatory, and liability purposes. BW and Motive also have distinct organizational structures and cultures.
Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) are lengthy and disruptive legal processes. It's wiser for EA, an American company, to keep two distinct Canadian subsidiaries in the same building and have them work on the same projects; the financial investment is smaller and less disruptive. EA may eventually consolidate both subsidiaries just as they did with the RPG/MMO Group (BW + Mythic) in 2009 or they may not.
This situation is exactly what happened when BW Montreal was created in 2009. BWM worked in the same studio as EA Montreal. Matter of fact, BWM, EA Montreal and EA Motive are in the same physical location. They will share resources and best practices (eg that Frostbyte logo you see on the OP).
To make it abundantly clear: BioWare Montreal is working for EA Motive. Mass Effect is on hiatus. It's time to accept reality, people"

Yeah I don't think they're dead. Yeah, this is basically just EA streamlining their different studios to be within same building. BW Montreal still exists, it's just a "roommate" with Motive Studios.

In fact, wasn't Montreal's first big thing the Omega DLC? I.e. another studio producing DLC for ME3?

In fact, wasn't Montreal's first big thing the Omega DLC? I.e. another studio producing DLC for ME3? Yes. Bioware Montreal started by making the MP and Omega DLC for ME3. Then with DAI despite being developed by Edmonton the The Descent DLC was developed in Austin. Part of MEA was also developed in Austin(Kadara I believe) so having multiple studios work on different pars is nothing new.

I initially used words such as "dissolved" and "assimilated," but it sounds like BioWare Montreal still exists, at least in name. ...EA Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen said BioWare Montreal has been moved into the EA Motive studio to help Jade Raymond's team develop a new IP. "We're building out a new studio in Montrأ©al, as we've told everyone. And we've hired over 100 people into that studio that are brand-new to EA. This is to build the new IP around Jade Raymond's team that she's been building. I was in that studio last month. And it's a wonderful new addition to our team. And we brought our BioWare Montrأ©al team into that same facility. So they now all sit in one new studio together," Mr. Jorgensen said during the call. That's not what that says at all. It says, specifically, that they moved BW Montreal to a new studio. The question that led to that answer explains why they were moved; Q: I was wondering, can you tease out what you mentioned earlier on the step-up in OpEx maybe on the R&D side with the new genres. And perhaps how much of the increase is more a timing issue versus a higher run rate for R&D? Full answer from the CFO; A: So we will have a slightly higher run rate for R&D. We're building out a new studio in Montréal, as we've told everyone. And we've hired over 100 people into that studio that are brand-new to EA. This is to build the new IP around Jade Raymond's team that she's been building. I was in that studio last month. And it's a wonderful new addition to our team. And we brought our BioWare Montréal team into that same facility. So they now all sit in one new studio together. We're obviously investing in Anthem, which everyone got a chance to see at E3. That's out of the BioWare Edmonton team and are very excited -- they're very excited. We'll see some increases around that in terms of spending. And then we're continuing to invest across all of our network and platform activities. I don't see any of those going beyond the targets that we've talked about, trying to keep R&D expense in the 21% to 22% of revenue range, but it is -- the goal is to drive new revenue. And if for some reason we weren't able to drive new revenue, clearly, that would be overspending, but we're very confident that we can drive new revenue around the action genre and continuing live service build-out across all of our products. BioWare Montreal isn't a part of Motive, they simply share studio space, probably in a move to lessen Operating Expenditures (OpEx). Two separate buildings is expensive as fuck.
