So in all the news that has come out for Andromeda I do not think there has been specifically a thread dedicated to share the appreciation of this story decision. Lots of discussion, theories, some criticism, but no real praise. Well I for one, am ridicliously pumped about this element of the game. Now sure they could royally mess this up in a million different ways but I am pumped.
Why?
Because in DA I my Inquisitor's, my Trevelyans, were brother and sister. Now granted they had two different versions of reality where each one of them survived the explosion of the Conclave, but it was a lot of fun playing with the two of them in different versions of reality and how what happened to them effected their respective characters. Especially with my female Trevelyan who, because they basically carted her mage brother off in the middle of the night to the Chantry, became disillusioned with a lot of things for the most of her life until she became Inquisitor.
And secondly because one of my favorite bits about DA 2, a game I really liked, was the relationship between the five Hawkes and how Hawke grew as a character in relation to what happened to their family. That was very much apart of their character arc.
So hopefully whether the other Ryders play a large or small role in the story, hopefully they are an important an integral part of the story. This could give the story, if done right, a really personal story and personal story motivations for the character. This is something which has been...kind of missing from the original series aside from a few of the side quests which specifically dealt with Shep's background(s). That whatever the larger reason for the protagonist Ryder doing their thing and whatever else they do part of their motivations in the story will be to deal with their family in one way or another, hence providing a character arc. The potential is there anyways.
Anyone else?

Your passion and head-cannon are why I became a Bioware fan. I hopr they don't let us down!
That they are siblings is a very interesting story choice and is a wide open field. I hope they use it well, it seems to me it would lead to at least a couple SP playthroughs, which was mandatory for me in ME but not so much in DA, especially in DAI.

I would love to do a couple of different playthroughs with the Ryders.

Hm... It all depends on what Bio means by human centric story.
Personally, from what I've read, Andromeda is NOT a Ryder or Ryder family centric story. If I read Bio correctly, the premise of the game is all about what the "humans" are doing to ensure a successful colonisation, in a very hostile cluster. The sibling is "out there" and out of the way from a plot perspective. The Khet want your ass. Meeting "Warring-races" will hardly be an initial love fest. Starting the colonisation process, pursuing the Loyalty missions, upgrading your Tempest, dealing with the antagonist, pirates and making allies will keep you way too busy.
Based on the above, I believe Ryder will have few opportunities to interact with her family. This remains true regardless of the gender chosen, as the mission objective remains the same. Sure, a different gender may present different story arc opportunities. These, however, are outside the critical path.
Ryder's success depends on the decisions made, the approach taken to a problem, how you interact with your team and potential allies, whether you can be trusted, decisive or a deuche, the ability to "rise to the occasion"... these, to me, are the important elements of the game. A male or female LI is hardly a game changer. The protag must retain focus on the mission objective at all times. Every action taken must pursue this goal regardless of possible daddy / sibling opposition, different viewpoints or if they are a pain in the ass.
In the end, I guess the "family affair" depends on how much of a stretch you want it to be. You know the sibling is out of the picture. So what "affair" is left given Ryder's responsibilities? The dad? If I was writing the story, Ryder would meet junior #2 and dad at the end of the game. Here, you would learn that both were working in the background to help you.

I don't really see why a matter of multi species survival should be a family affair, but maybe the scope isn't just that big.

I don't really see why a matter of multi species survival should be a family affair, but maybe the scope isn't just that big. Macro versus micro. The Macro story could be about saving your family and doing all sorts of things but the micro story, the thing that makes it personal, could be about your family. It will not just mean you are fighting to save humanity, but your family as well.

I like the idea of the family in MEA. I like it alot, but it does depend on what BW does with it. How far "out there" is the sibling going to be? If they are so out there doing their thing that they are not a part of the story--in any meaningful way, then what's the point? So, I hope the sibling is more a part of the story than not. N7 guy is apparently your father. I'm not certain how I feel about that part. I'm not really enthused about that part for some reason. We'll have to see. Overall, though, I like the idea. It has potential to offer a more personal touch. It was an aspect I loved about DA2 as well, but I'm more reserved about it in MEA until I get better understanding of how BW is going to approach it. When they said the sibling was "out there" I had a twinge of disappointment because it sounded like they were going to be pretty much out the picture. Maybe we'll get some lame emails from them. "Dad"...Idk. What the heck is he doing? Are we going to be running after him, or him us? He's so important that he starred in the debut Cash trailer. Is he going to be the lens through which we define what N7 is, for good, and/or bad? We laughed about everyone having Daddy issues in ME, now we're the ones that are going to have Daddy issues.

Personally, I am really excited too. And I disagree with the comment that MEA is going to be colony-oriented. Yes, the story of the trilogy was not that deep in general (especially ME3, since it really was just about the reapers and not really about something else, which is completely fine imo because it made sense) but as seen in the second game, the story had a lot of relationship based potential. Maybe this is just my view, but for me ME2 was more about your suicide squad and the people you were once close with being confused and leery since you worked with Cerberus, than the collector issue. Your crew was the key point, you learned about their past and problems (if you wanted them to be loyal) and had sort of a connection whit them which was even an element in the last game. I think BW is capable of finding a balance between the story of the family and the story of the colonisation.
Well, and I'm convinced that those two stories are connected but it really depends what you think is going on in Andromeda and how they got there. For me, your dad is one of the bad guys, if not THE antagonist, because he has different beliefs than the rest of the Ark, just as the Illusive Man had different opinions when it came to humanity in the galaxy.

Though not sure i entirely like the idea because of Fallout.

Yeah, I like the idea of it being a family deal. It will depend on what Bioware do with it, but the potential to make it have a big impact on the story is there.

Can't say I'm excited but definately interested. Would be fun if they are going to make Bro/Sis Ryders trilogy protagonists. That's something nobody has done before, at least I don't remember anyone. Asking real questions here.
