I thought the ME:A characters were fine based on their own merits, though I disliked Liam due to his status as a walking fuck up and found Cora to just be meh. (Found her more appealing than Ashley but thats not saying much) I liked Vetra, Jaal was also cool, grandpa Drack was amazing, and Peebee was my favorite. I'm curious on what you guys thought about the characters?

I like Liam too, precisely because he's a fuckup.
Cora strikes me as a miss, though I'm having trouble figuring out exactly why. In theory the character should have worked. (I felt this way about Nathyrra back in the day.)

(I felt this way about Nathyrra back in the day.) As other people have stated on BSN in the past, all she really thinks about is asari stuff. A weeablu as it were. Hell even Peebee makes fun of her for it.

(I felt this way about Nathyrra back in the day.) I liked Cora overall but felt some of her dialogue just didn't land at times, especially during the romance. Can't explain it more beyond I think...dialogue was flat at times for her. I think more could have been done to give her more singular personality beyond "Pathfinder's" and "Asari Huntress Protege".

Overall, I thought Drack was given the biggest and most complete story arc. He was just well done.
I liked Cora, Peebee, and Jaal a lot as well. Cora could have used a few more "personal" moments but her character fit. Peebee voice was right on, as was her basic personality, but her "Kelinda" arc needed a better resolution...and she needed to stop using human idioms. Jaal was smooth as butter in the delivery, a good character overall but I really only used him in Angaran-focused planets and missions.
Vetra needed...more. There was a great character in there somewhere but it felt unfinished. I kept waiting for her to impress me with her smuggling and scrounging but her best actions seemed to happen off screen.
Liam needed a lot more work

I like all of the characters, though Liam took a lot of work. His romance arc finally allowed me to hurdle the challenges. He was always believably written. I just wanted to kick his ass and fire him.
I suspect that all of the "these characters are boring" talk comes down to persons only playing the game once. It's impossible to fully appreciate the content during a single PT. I'm still experiencing new banter, which brings character development, in my 8th full PT. I'd elaborate more, but my device is about to run out of battery power. ☹️ This crew is much better developed than our cherished friends aboard Normandy SR1. The Tempest crew could be great, given more time together.

Both Garrus and Tali didn't offer too much in the way of character development through dialogue and both didn't really shine until ME2. Wrex gave you a bit more but still felt a bit empty. In the Ashley vs Kaiden choice, I've pretty much always chosen Ashley if only because Kaiden was really that uninteresting. Liara was the one I liked the most of the crew. It really took the trilogy arcs for these characters for them to become cherished. The Tempest characters could have been that given the chance.

I liked Liara a lot in ME1 but her development, if you want to call it that felt like something out of a fan-fiction. I mean it wouldn't be hard at all to have her develop as the archaeologist and have her harden as a character, but in Liara's case the only constant seemed to be a crush on Shepard, which got pretty unhealthy in LoTSB as she takes you old armor to enshrine in her apartment. (*Inhales and says to self* Come on Guts, stop bitching about Liara's "development".)

They're kind of like PoE next to Baldur's Gate II: they've got plenty of backstory, decent dialogue...but kind of anemic, they lack their own, dunno?, spark, no real tension, etc. They didn't have the balls to go fully through with it, imo. Rpg Party relationship dynamic should be like mexican soap opera...yelling, screaming, fighting and everyone trying to screw over one another.

I honestly didn't care for any of the squadmates. They all felt very bland. Of course the 2 people I did like I couldn't have on my squad (Dr Lexi and Gil). These 2 along with Suvi (whom I found annoying)felt far better written overall.
This is the first Bioware game where I truly didn't have any interest in doing the squad missions. I did them more for the achievements than anything.

They were ok, but most of them don't really stand out as being great characters to me. I didn't really hate any of them either. That's probably a reflection of their limited personalities.
Drack - my favorite of the companions Cora - she seemed interesting at first, but then never really went anywhere Vetra - she also seemed interesting at first, but then it was all about her sister and little else Liam - very boring/forgettable, probably would be fine in a larger crew Jaal - sort of liked Jaal, he's a bit more unique since he's a new race Peebee - liked her more than I expected, sometimes annoying but at least has a personality
Kallo - he was all right / average Suvi - liked her pretty well Gil - his personality was good, but the storyline was a mess Lexi - fine/average
But honestly, my favorite character was Reyes. He had personality, could be charming, and his storyline has interesting moments.

Peebee was definitely my favourite. I was worried beforehand i was going to find her annoying but ended up finding her a big factor in what made the game so fun to me.
Liked Drack and Cora, even though she didn't turn out to be my LI of choice.
Vetra and Liam were slugging it out for least interesting as far as i was concerned.

Personally none of the characters really gripped me all that much. Drack was probably my favourite, but he still feels like just another iteration of "badass Krogan fighter" that we've already seen twice before in Wrex and Grunt.
Compared to Mass Effect 1 there is a ton more dialogue for the characters, but by the end of the game I found myself far less interested in going back to the ship after every mission to see what they had to say than I did in Mass Effect 1.

I thought the pathfinders were far more interesting than anyone on the Tempest. Indeed. A retired Turian Spectre, a pragmatic Asari commando, and a Salarian Dalatrass. They all seemed much more interesting.
It was rather ironic meeting them and not being able to recruit them. See those cool and interesting characters? Nah, you can't have them, here, have Liam and Cora instead...
I think those three should be squadmates in a sequel. (This includes getting rid of Cora and Liam.)

Well I think of all the squad mates Cora and Liam are the weakest in terms of being good. Liam wins out over Cora though because of his amazing personal mission. Sure Liam is a fuck up and for some reason he didn't get fired but I think he redeems himself a bit towards the end. Cora on the other hand is good at the start but she doesn't get any better. She has a similar issue that Sebastian had in DA2 where her struggle was completely internal and the PC input doesn't matter. Then there's the fact they bundled Cora's mission in with the asari arc, that didn't help. The Asari arc mission should have been separate and not required (for cora's arc). I feel like Cora should have been thrown into a situation where a younger member of the initiative (arounds Sid's age) was having issues being a boitic. Why the devs keep avoiding this stigma towards biotics topic even though its been teased so much drives me insane. If they had done that Cora's "am I leader or follower?" and "I wish someone told me being a biotic isn't strange/taboo" could have been tackled in one swoop. Cora had a lot of potential shame we may never see it developed.
