The "characters" of MEA could not stand up in being the framework that caries Bioware games into excellence. That last piece of magic (character writing) that could mask flaws in other areas is simply not there in this game. I am very curious if the Dragon Age franchise, at least, can keep this magical character writing intact to a certain degree. The decline is already visible in DAI. I suppose a culture top-down versus bottom-up has a price and Bioware is a victim of this. Creativity can't flourish in a top-down environment. Decline in DAI? Solas? Cassandra? Varric? Dorian? Cole? Just to name a few? You consider their characterizations a decline?

For me personally, the decline in DAI = there and it is fine to disagree with me.

This. There's certainly some hinky-ness in the writing, but this crew is the most believable. Which is good and bad, but honestly, part of what I love about Andromeda is that I've met people like every squadmate.... And I've been Liam with the "Oh shit, I made a big decision and now I need to bust my ass and do whatever it takes to make this big decision work AND ALSO HIDE MY FEAR THROUGH JOKES" more often than I'd care to admit. My one major issue with Andromeda's characters is that most of them just flat out tell you how they're crazy instead of letting you infer it. But a lot of real people do that, so I'm okay with that too. Believable? I surely expect that you don't know people that say "haha, that one doesn't like me, maybe because I shot him on the face" or "Look, these rocks are floating!" or "Sorry, I get a little pissed when someone is trying to kill me!" in the middle of a battle for your life against an unknown alien race. And seriously, this was supposed to be an elite team to colonize a new galaxy, and not a bunch of idiots. Especially Liam, who is supposed to be a "crisis dealer", but he's actually totally opposite of what a "crisis dealer" should be (not to mention he is COMPLETELY RETARD). Liam should be arrested for treason, not treat it like it was a joke. I really hope next game we get to "shoot him in the face". So you've never said anything stupid when adrenaline is running high? Because people actually do do that. I've made some bad jokes in the ambulance. That's one of the things I love about Liam. The derpy lines during a crisis is something real people do. It's not admirable, and it doesn't make him cool (or very likable), but it strikes a very familiar chord. Liam is a first responder. Crisis response is set up as basically a search and rescue/EMS squad that may do a bit of shooting. What got him in the pathfinder program was probably his broad skill range and relative youth. Alec was probably planning on knocking off some rough edges, because remember... Liam's pretty green. I'm not pointing a finger at you (or anyone), but there is a tendency to equate not liking a character with bad writing. I think Liam is a pretty spectacular character, but he's certainly not a particularly likable one. (I find him charming, but I'm a young first responder who occasionally says stupid things SO I MAY BE BIASED.)

If only Liam had a proper battle bark, like the inspirational "Gravity's one mean mother!". I know we're talking about ME, but I still shutter when I think back to "I SEE SOME DARKSPAAAAWWWWN." With the exception of the ones signalling someone's low on health, I've been kinda wishing the battle cries would just go away for a while. SCOPED AND DROPPED No it's not Garrus the mech is still coming GARRUS WHERE ARE YOU GOING

[Yeah, that's the worst, the game OBLIGATES your character to like him. Roleplaying is pretty much dead. It's a little late in the history of Mass Effect to suddenly start being bothered by that

Drack is the only one I liked except for the Krogan scout thing. Cora was ok although that is probably because I had to have two of them with me on missions.

(To self) Must....not....bitch....about....Liara! Well shit, I will if you won't. She's a Mary Sue. I hate that term but Liara almost perfectly fits it. Her transformation from archeologist to the most powerful information broker in the galaxy in the span of two years is laughable and pushed. Her character design is boring. The series constantly assuming that she's your love interest is annoying. Her obvious feelings for Shepard regardless of whether you romanced her or not is unflattering and sometimes even creeping. Her giving Shepard's corpse to Cerberus is beyond creepy and is straight up horrifying. Oh, and her voice actress is just TERRIBLE! Only way I can get through it is by assuming it's a joke and the voice actress is just doing her best Shatner impression. "But...but....it's because you DIED!!1!eleventy-one!" But what if someone didn't romance her, then it's just creepy. Let's also not forget about the bit where she enshrines your armor in her apartment. (She had some pretty unhealthy behavior in ME2 and people were totally fine with it, that's where I start to get irritated.) There was a scene from ME1 where you choose Ashley over Liara, in that case, Liara admit's that she mistook your kindness (If you showed any) for romantic attraction and recognizes that it was her fault for the misunderstanding and asks to just be friends and move on. Well apparently that gets thrown out the window in ME2.

I thought she was awesome in the first game, but she was terrible after that. (I had to come up with my own theory JUST to fix it) I don't like using the term Mary Sue much because I tend to reserve it for characters that just seem WAY too perfect, to the point where it's just ridiculous

Yeah, I saw how he perfectly handled the "search and rescue" of his random contact, invading the ship without any kind of plan and expecting things to go right because "they have to". Yeah, great skill, great "crisis responder". Merrill is a character that is much more accurate in being "socially awkward" than Liam can ever hope to be. And even the stupid things she does are much more believable. And yes, you're totally biased. I really hope that if you're in the army someday in the middle of a war, you don't give vital information to people from other countries to "build trust" (I believe nobody would be that dumb, which just makes Liam less believable), because that will get you arrested and possibly executed for treason.

Actually though my take was she went from being creepy cheereader to just plain boring character. She did virtually nothing in ME 3 except for having kind of a touching scene in the goodbye scenes.

Liam's main problem is his overcompensation for his past and his belief. Hell he operates under two basic assumptions. 1. The AI was worth it and a good idea. 2. Because it wasn't he feels that he has to do everything in his power to force it to be a good thing. Instead he learns he can just let things happen.

I hope we get to learn more about them in the future! Ironically enough this probably did lead to at least one problem. I was really expecting Vetra to be a female Garrus. I know its unfair but that expecation led to dissapointment. Though, to me, she is probably the flattest character of the lot.

Liam has loads of depth, just because its not obvious and in your face and actually has to make the audience think and pay attention does not mean he's badly written.

Then this is my last post talking to you about Liam in this thread. Liam's entire character is that he can't always save or solve everything, especially by himself and without the proper know how. I don't think anyone is trying to say what he did is not dumb, but rather its consistent with his flaws and arc.

With AUTHORIZATION, and I bet you they don't provide VITAL informations, like COMMUNICATION CODES. And especially not to random people that you barely know. DUH. Like I said, I really hope you one day enter the army, and then give vital info about the army to random people of other countries while you're all at war. Then I'd love to see you argue with authorities that you did it to "build trust".

Fortunately, Bioware won't listen to "fans" like you, and that's why they abandoned this shitty game I found Liam to have more depth then Jack, Grunt, Liara, Isabella, Oghren, and Jacob. Liam has loads of depth, just because its not obvious and in your face and actually has to make the audience think and pay attention does not mean he's badly written. "Make the audience think and pay attention" is exactly what this game DOESN'T do. And I really don't care what you think about Liam. The fact that Bioware just abandoned Andromeda says more than everything.

Um, allied militaries and nations share information with each other all the time. That's actually a pretty established method to gain trust and build relationships. With AUTHORIZATION, and I bet you they don't provide VITAL informations, like COMMUNICATION CODES. And especially not to random people that you barely know. DUH. And that is where Liam messed up, I agree. However you said that nobody would be dumb enough to give vital information to people from other countries to build trust, so I was pointing out that not only is that not true but it can be a common practice.

He really is badly written, because there is NOTHING in his character except dumbness and bad jokes. There is absolutely ZERO depth. Um, allied militaries and nations share information with each other all the time. That's actually a pretty established method to gain trust and build relationships. Yes, that's true, but Liam did what did without any approval from Ryder or the Andromeda Initiative. I mean, Mass Effect has never seriously tried to in anyway be realistic when it comes to how military and government actually works, but Liam's shenanigans are definitely out there even for Mass Effect. Then again, the Alliance takes back Shepard pretty easily even through he/she was part of a human supremacist terrorist group for awhile. Also, there's Peebee loyalty mission which definitely should have had an option to kick her out of the Tempest by at the end. Mildly Military seems to be MEA's favorite tvtrope.

As I said in another post, that is where Liam messed up. His mistake wasn't giving that information, but giving it without clearing it with his superiors first. To be fair, the Andromeda Initiative isn't really a military organization but a civilian one(even Kandros' militia is technically unofficial) so being Mildly Military makes more sense then like in the Shepard Trilogy with the Alliance.
