All main quests should have mandatory full party. Look at DAI, the quality of main story quests suffers from not properly accommodating to the presence of companions. Or protagonist talking to the people who are not present. (At least it was fixed in Trespasser DLC.) "In Hushed Whispers", which forces player to have full party, works partly thanks to the feels-fest over companions' suffering and sacrifice. (Still we have Solas, Cassandra or Vivienne standing like dummies and letting Magister Alexius do his thing.) I don't have any kind words about "Here Lies the Abyss" writing, courtesy of Patrick Weekes' pen. Leave solo as an option for open world-ing and side quest-ing. Integrate companions in the main story, dammit. If not recruited ( denied or not yet), Vivienne should have been present during "WE&WH" or Rainwall during the wardens' arc. Just like Dorian and Cole are irreplaceable for mages/templars questline. Integrating companions means that there'd have to be mandatory recruitment and inability for followers to either leave or be killed.

Voilà, full party. Write around the presence of 3 people who accompany the protagonist and not magically vanish or take to their heels when the plot demands. (At Haven, in the Fade, etc)

Speaking of companions I'm hoping there's still 9 and the number won't be lowered. Origins had too few with 6ish, but DA:2 and DA:I increased that to 9 which was good. Mass Effect Andromeda also had too few with 6.
I miss the days of Baldur's Gate with 20, or Suikoden with 70ish.

Origins already had 9 companions + Shale. and if you read the cut content, potentially, could have been 10 or even 11, such a shame.

Companions? I wouldn't mind if there's only 6 in the next game.

(At Haven, in the Fade, etc) So you'd prefer to just have 3 mandatory companions instead of 9 that we can shuffle around? Also - it's not like companions don't have individual little scenes or dialogues when they accompany Inky. But asking for them to be written in more deeply (?) immediately requires way more resources.

I'm the opposite actually - I hate mandatory companions for story missions (see, Liara for Thessia - would love to leave her whiny ass on the ship but I can't). I want to be able to take who I want, or no one if I don't want anyone else along (this latter was a problem in MEA for the romance side quests). If everyone else comes along "in the background," that's fine, but I want to pick my party every time.

When did I say that? (English is my third language, maybe something was lost in translation...) DAI has 3 mandatory (that's full party) and 6 optional companions. It's excellent setup actually. Game already gives player the full party, it doesn't matter who those 3 people. The core of the problem lies in that the main quests does not account for presence of given by default full party. "The Wrath of Heaven", part of "The Threat Remains", "In Hushed Whispers" and that's it. "Special" dialogue options are cool, but not that important. The important part is your companions running away when it's convinient for the plot (I brought up especially aggravating cases: at Haven and in the Fade). It's lazy.
P.S. It's certainly not about asking for more "Liara~Thessia" scenarios (no, thanks), it's about having mandatory full party storywise. MET main quests are mostly great in that area (though it's not like you can solo Mass Effect games.)

They should set up as an option for a player to travel with, or without companions without penalizing the player to travel and fight alone. Fallout and Skyrim are great examples of providing freedom to choose how you play without boundaries.

Companions? I wouldn't mind if there's only 6 in the next game. Yep, less companions, but more focused writing Fewer than 9 companions harms party based strategic combat, imo. The idea is that you'd have enough options to build a party around your playstyle, and ideally enough options of each class (mage, thief) so that there's often an option available so the personality of the character in question meshes with your party and/or the player. It's fine in an action based game though. Mass Effect could get away with 6 because, well, it's just a shooter imo . It would be a kick in the nuts for me if they reduced companions to 6 for DA:4, though.

9 companions is fine but not if there are 3 advisors also. 12 people to run around and get updates from after every mission is just too many, especially when scattered all over (past loading screens) like in DAI. If everyone is in one place, like DAO camp, it's not so tedious.

Having the 9 companions, 3 of each class, and the prominent NPCs was nice. Hopefully they do that again.
