Time to lay down arms?

I've never been to reddit but christ that sounds bad.

It really is that bad. The system is used to crush dissent and reward the circlejerk. It may not be by design, but that is how it is used abused.

It really depends which subforum you go to. However because posts get "hidden" from view once it hits a ... -5 rating or something, and Reddit by default sorts threads from most upvoted comments to least upvoted comments, Reddit will always be one of the bigger echo chambers on the internet. That's not a problem if you want to be a part of that echo chamber, but it's not exactly conducive to excellent discussion.

Of course in a subreddit, when you get an equal portion of the population having one point of view, and an equal portion having another (if I'm reading Smilesja right is what's happening on Battlefront) then hilarity ensues because all of a sudden they need to tolerate arguments from someone with an opposing point of view and can't just downvote those views out of sight -> the horror.

I didn’t join the forums until April and at that point you needed heavy armor and a shield if you were going to last more than a week here.  I have still found this a fun place to be for the most part, even if I hid away from the MEA general discussion for the first 3 months. I have managed to make some great friends on here and I suppose minus a few things, I wouldn’t change this place. Less chaotic would be nice, but… eh where is the sense of adventure in that?

I'm sure that woman holds hands with someone after pulverizing trees. Maybe it's no fun being the tree, but still. 10K video game forum goers and some act like we have nothing in common. We are likely as much alike as we are different.

In general I try to say things on this forum that I would say in a face-to-face conversation (with unlimited time to formulate thoughts and editing powers). I've been able to have respectful conversations with people, even those I disagree with strongly. Many people will debate in good faith if they see you are doing the same.

I don't bother talking to people who are just around to make others upset. I have enough shit to deal with and no time to get ulcers on a game forum. It surprises me how many people respond to toxic and inflammatory posts with agitated posts of their own. It's not going to make anything better. If someone is not worth your time, don't spend five pages telling them so. Just don't reply to them at all. They'll get the point... eventually.

Basically, just don't reply to people who are insulting. You'll live longer.
