If you wanted to play multiplayer it was amazing, if you just wanted to play the single player campaign it was mediocrity personified.
That's very much in the eye of the beholder. I spent countless hours in single player and not one in MP. It came out in 2002. Roughly at the same time Morrowind came out. I played them both and liked Morrowind more. But only because of the abundance of mods coming out in the ensuing months and years.

Reading this thread is a little painful tbh.
It's been a year. What's with the cynicism?

Anyone willing to bet that MMO'S are what Bioware have planned for all their games (even Dragon Age 4 and Mass Effect.)With loot box's and micro transactions? I'm not even sure what's really left of Bioware. In terms of decision making that is. Sure, there's staff and studios, but it's easy to slap a label over a studio if you own the rights to a brand. EA certainly thinks that online is the more lucrative future. As for me, I don't expect anything of value coming from Bioware anymore. Hopefully other studios will take over, fill the gap, or simply continue to do what they're doing without being bought off. Although I get the sentiment, I don't know if things are really THAT bad. Mass Effect 3 was under time pressure by EA, which ultimately lead to the issues I'm sure don't require repetition. Despite this, it was a great game imo. Dragon Age Inquisition although not perfect was quite good. Andromeda was handed to a studio that wasn't ready to handle it. They only had experience with multiplayer, and it shows. The combat was the best in the series, but, what many people play BioWare games for, which are the story and characters, was left in the dust. I doubt the main studio would have produced such shallow characters and a bland story. Anthem should be at least Dragon Age Inquisition level, although I'm not a fan of the whole always online with friends thing. I actually liked The Old Republic though, so, I am keeping an eye on Anthem, with caution. To be fair, Casey Hudson does have a good track record, so with his return, things should go better, as long as EA allows.

Reading this thread is a little painful tbh. It's been a year. What's with the cynicism? Is there any particular reason for optimism? I wouldn't exactly consider myself a cynic...mostly just frustrated by the decision making process of late and the apparent lack of anyone willing to take charge at EA/Bioware.

I'm not calling for optimism. There's a difference between apprehensiveness and outright cynicism though. What do we know about the development of the upcoming games other than hearsay to warrant that judgement? As I said it's been a year. If people genuinely lack any faith in BioWare (for whatever reason) then I question their reasons for still being here after all this time.

To be fair, Casey Hudson does have a good track record, so with his return, things should go better, as long as EA allows. That's impossible. You're asking the impossible. EA is investor heaven. Yes, investor heaven because they make good on the investors and damn everyone else. Why else would Wilson stay in charge? If this was any other industry, it wouldn't change because he knows that for every casual and every hardcore fan... there's a whale to take advantage of. He knows it because history is on his side. When Andromeda was destined not to be profitable enough, he canned it because it doesn't help the investor bottom line. BioWare can make Anthem incredible and the studio will always... ALWAYS... have to fear that spectre of closure. BioWare has never enjoyed the comforts of stability because Wilson doesn't want an art studio he wants a cash cow. Great salaries, great insurance gets old real fast when politics, corporate scum buggery and bullshit that has little to do with development take center stage. That's from my perspective. Still... I have confidence Anthem is going to be a fun ride, it's how EA will handle the rest. How much short-term greed EA will apply to it? Frankly, Wilson amazes me on how much he resembles snake oil saleman that manage to stay employed. He comes up with cons that even the mafia is saying, "It's time to go legit and invest in EA."

His whole DLC comment just comes across as weird. Previous games had DLC but suddenly the game series kicked into the deep freeze didn't. So are they planning to solve this going forward by not having a game received so poorly that EA kick it into deep freeze or is this hinting that they will commit to story expansions beforehand that people can pre-purchase like other companies.
