....reading through this thread is giving me conflicting vibe all around....
But in the context of the interview, Casey were addressing why Anthem lack romance. But the way he said it was contradicting; he implied "Romance" as in "Bioware romance with sex scenes" while hinting Anthem's relationships that can be flirty and romantic which IS still considered a romance. Platonic even.
I think it's better to be specific what kinds of preference that everyone want. I myself generally appreciate relationship development over animated sex scenes. Like I romance Arcann in SWTOR. Like every SWTOR romance, there's no sex scenes and for that romance specifically, they're not married. It doesn't change that I play with them being in love with each other. I literally could just interpret them having platonic relationship or sexual relationship over a long period of time. I am satisfied with the relationship because I've observed them having little moments throughout the story that they shared with each other which happened outside their designated romance scenes.
I also romanced Kaidan as FemShep and I love their relationship which doesn't always have to be physical. The best moments I love about them were the ones that was outside their designated romance scenes; when Shepard saved Kaidan from the beacon, when Shepard ordered him to safety before Normandy was destroyed, when they look at each other during the shuttle ride to Mars, when Shepard fall apart after Kaidan was injured etc. I count this as their relationship arc; even if they're not actively dating with each other. At the end of ME3, Shepard can refuse sex with Kaidan and still have him sleeping next to her in the room. Telling a romantic story involved so much more than some kiss or sex scenes.
I get why TW3 was gushed all over for its romances but I think what people meant was the unabashed erotic moments with a lot female nudity. But why would Bioware want to imitate that? Their games aren't eroge.

Because BioWare's romance is dull and a snooze fest?

Intimate is a much BUT sex scene is not necessary. I prefer meaningful scene between two guy more than sex scene.

They can set up a balance of sex and romance. Take Witcher 3 for example. The romantic moments between Geralt and Triss are well made, and they show a well balanced sex scene to match a romantic relationship. I could understand the whole kiss-fade-to-black in T for Teen games, but the games we're playing are games with mature content. So they should involve sex scenes when it comes to romance. Okay, let's have balance then. Some romances in the game have sex, some romances in the game don't. There, balance. Or just skip the sex scenes for those who are squeamish.
