I seem to remember DAI hitting 6 million at launch. Almost certainly didn't. It was, according to EA, Bioware's biggest launch but 6 million started floating around years after launch. The sale figures for Veilguard can't be identified, even from the video, as sale numbers or sell through numbers. Sell through numbers would be copies the studio has sold to the store for XMAS shopping season. If Veilguard was Bioware's biggest launch you will have EA trumpet it. I really wouldn't expect it. The sale figures from Bioware outline why they will do best as a AA studio and not a AAA one. As much as Midnight Tea would like to say these are in line with big AAA RPGs, the Kingdom of Amalur studio was shut down for selling 1.3 million in the first 90 days. Apparently that was a "failure". Hm.. FYI
Unsold items, be tapes, dvds, music, games, Blue Ray... etc are always packed and returned to the company (in this case Disney).
My wife worked for a merchandising company that had Disney as one of its client. The merchandising company's responsibility is to display the new stock in eye catching locations at the store. When time "was up", she would be told to go to the box stores and pack all unsold stock items Dissney (games included) and return them back to Disney in pre printed packing slips using the original shipping boxes. Sometimes I went with her to help with the packing (I was retired at the time).
Bottom line: Stores don't get saddled with unsold stock and the "sold numbers" = sold - returns.
Note1: The sold number is actually the number of items, say Toy Story, that was ordered by the merch company sales dept who invariably ordered too much in the hope it sold big. Big sales meant Disney is pleased and the contract would be easy to renew.
Note2: There are many merch companies at a WalMart, for example. Some take care of cosmetics, the potato chips, soda stock., music dvds....

Somebody called the rpg genre "niche", purposefully using quotations.
And that's an indie game, chief.

Baldur's Gate 3 is technically indie.
What makes game niche is production value.
Dragon Age is not niche, not since BioWare is a household name. RPG is not niche, Final Fantasy, Elden Ring etc - are all under the big tent definition of RPG.

Fantasy RPGs as well JRPGs are considered niche barring a few exceptions.

RPGs, as a genre, have long been considered niche (as compared to very popular genres like FPS). That has been the industry conventional wisdom for years, and most of the time, the sales of most rpgs still support that thinking. However, in (relatively speaking) recent years there have been a lot of breakthrough rpg hits. Ergo, putting "niche" in quotation marks, because it's starting to be viewed less so by the industry. The popularity of non-video game rpgs (well, namely D&D) has also contributed to that.
I never called DA specifically niche. That said, Dragon Age as an IP was never really quite a mainstream hit in the wide world of gaming.
Anyway, the weirder you get about this pedantic argument, the more we stray from the topic (again). I at least tried to put forward some actual insider-industry concrete information to consider when we speculate. You oddly cherrypick and hyper-fixate on something that was not the point and post a link to a random indie game.
Edit: "BioWare is a household name" Haha ok.

actual insider-industry concrete information Anecdotal evidence at best, no offense. My "qualm" with the statement is not because you put it into quotation mark, it's because there are many people that actually believe that it's actually the case, and use it as justification slash affirmation to their belief that Veilguard is "a success". To circle back to sales topic: We're going on a circle, we can only identify symptoms and not the sickness itself. Unless we seen an actual sales number, or formal statement, all we have to pay our attention to is what data/facts which are available to us. Steam Player numbers, store player rating etc or studio layoff. It's a good indication but not definitive for sure.

Even if they're no longer considered niche, people will recognize a Mario game than they will a Dragon Age or even a BG3 game. Some gamers really overestimate how impactful RPGs are outside of the hardcore gamer circles.

Even if they're no longer considered niche, people will recognize a Mario game than they will a Dragon Age or even a BG3 game. Some gamers really overestimate how impactful RPGs are outside of the hardcore gamer circles. Not hardcore, just gaming. There are differences between popular within gaming industry and popular as in part of the culture/zeitgeist. Mario has become part of culture, Dragon Age is not, obviously, nor Mass Effect - and not even Baldur's Gate 3 like you said. In my understanding there are three layers of gaming market +1: first layer: enthusiast (or hardcore) <- swordhaven, space wreck, colony ship are here. second layer: hobbyist (console player etc.) <- Dragon Age Origins is here (and *most* video game title if they are 'relatively' successful) third layer: general gaming audience (gaming on the weekend, maybe) <- Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden Ring is here. Zeitgeist: general market <-- mario is here, along with mcdonalds. the point is, it's kinda hard to pin point what Dragon Age is, it lacked identity it "shit" on its tradition in each iteration - compared to Mass Effect. But In my opinion, saying that Dragon Age is and RPG or niche feels incorrect. It definitely not an RPG (barely) and not niche in quotation or not. In the end of the day it's Costs vs profit.
