Yeah, I think people had a bit too high expectations after that short cinematic teaser a few years ago. This looks like a "Fantasy Outer Worlds" which seems like something more along the lines of what Obsidian can handle. And that's fine. Outer Worlds was fun, not exactly the greatest game in the universe but fun. So I am expecting something similar to that.

It's match Pillars of Eternity Deadfire aesthetic, a bit too much in fact. For example, the dock scene at the start looks like a copy-paste of Neketaka docks in Deadfire, but the game is set in the Living Land which isn't near the Deadfire archipelagos (it's like on the opposite side of the world map actually). And Obsidian doesn't have the staff to make a AAA, this is going to be a AA similar to the The Outer Worlds. I haven't played Pillars of Eternity yet, thanks for the info. Huh. Could have sworn Avowed was marketed as having a AAA budget thanks to Microsoft. Guess my mind made that up then. From what we've seen it makes more sense that it's more like the Outer Worlds which I'm actually looking forward to much more despite the slightly disappointing experience. Go play Pillars of Eternity!!!! I thought we had a thread for this back in the day. Well, 2024 release date announced: Cool trailer. Nice that you could see the PC in some cut scenes and animatics, so hopefully customization isn't completely wasted. Based on the combat, do you think they're going classless, or a variation on Deadfire's multiclassing? Looking back at the games in Obsidian's legacy showcased at the beginning, it's a pity they could only display the ones they (and now Microsoft) owns. KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, and Alpha Protocol remain some of my favorites.

Based on the combat, do you think they're going classless, or a variation on Deadfire's multiclassing? Confirmed to be classless with different skill trees with a focus on unlocking skills instead of putting points into stats for growth. This was confirmed in a recent interview. Obsidian designers are big fan of classless systems. Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 are only class based because they were pitched as "classic D&D-like games". Even the TTRPG based on Pillars of Eternity is classless. Also, only human and elf has playable because "Aedyr envoy" PC.

Go play Pillars of Eternity!!!! Yes, the first cgi trailer and marketing were for a AAA Skyrim-like budget game on paper, but that game was rebooted after it got stuck in development hell (I didn't follow that drama super closely, the game director ended up leaving from what I remember). The current Avowed is a reboot/downsized version of what they originally showed under a new director that fits better with Obsidian dev team size and knowledge. Aha! So that's what happened. Shame. Development hell doesn't fill me with confidence but maybe it was a good thing. I'll check out gameplay at release and will make a decision based on what I see. I haven't played Pillars yet because I SUCK at cRPGs and can only play them on easy mode. And I was told I'll be frustrated with this series. But those games have been on my "when I'm out of games to play" list at least. *g*

I wonder if they had to dial it back a little because they had themselves spread out too much on different projects. If I recall they had Grounded, Outer Worlds 2, Pentiment and Avowed all being worked on at some point. Personally, I'm perfectly fine with the game being scaled back a bit. I think too many developers have been going for the super long games and it can be hard to actually getting around to finishing many of them.

I was reading the official Avowed forum and I learned that Deadfire ended up quite profitable after two years according to Josh Sawyer. It broke even after 18 months (that is super slow) and then just continued to sell well. That means a POE3 is possible, since Avowed isn't that. And rewatching the trailer, I really love the look of the Aumaua. To bad we can't play as one. But that trailer is still so badly edited... Hopefully, they have more to show soon.

Sometimes having a long tail of sales can count, and hopefully that's the case for POE2 for a POE3.
For Avowed, I wanted to see more, and I got to see a little more, and I'm now interested. No hype or anything, and I'm not entirely sure about its art style, but it seems nice. Hey, an in-between reaction counts too!

For me the visuals are actually the only halfway decent thing about it to me, lol. For AA it looks pretty good imo. Is this first person only? That would suck. I already hated this about Outer Worlds. I need to see my custom character! One thing I don't like about Cyberpunk either. While I do play Bethesda games 90% in first person I do look at my characters all the time and take screenshots too.

So now that I had the time to watch the whole gameplay breakdown: - underwater swimming (take that Starfield!) - starting archetype (give a building base for your character but doesn't bind you to it), no classes, they tried to take as many abilities from Pillars and put them into a bit different skill trees. - companions (can travel with 2), they are locals to the Living Land and act as advisor in quests. They also have combat roles (like healer and tank). - drinking a potions has an animation - we got 2 weapon loadouts (can mix the single handed weapons via the dual wielding system) - power attacks, block and normal melee confirmed - respeccing will be available - elemental reactivity (set people in fire, freeze them, electrify them), can make "combos" like creating a fire surface and dumping an enemy in it via spells. - environmental barrier destruction (destroyed things to find hidden paths like brambles) - Tanglefoot, Charge, Into the Fray confirmed abilities available - Living Land has mostly Rautai settlers, there is a soul plague going (tied to Deadfire ending) and an Archmage with a frozen labyrinth... I think it looks pretty good. I like the visual style they are going with. Not every game needs to look ultra realistic. Though I do think they need to add some more impact to the combat. It looked very Elderscrolls Online/Oblivion as far as enemies reacting to being hit. Def looking forward to seeing more as the year goes on.

I'm usually all for romance stuff in games but at the same time most of them make me cringe. I much prefer good friendships to romance so I hope they can deliver on that. I'm very meh on what we've seen of the game. So that news is a shrug for me.

There was a discussion about this in another forum and my take was that typical RPG romances are most like what you see in dating sims, harem anime, and certain romance novels and films: a nondescript blank slate protagonist the audience can project into enters a relationship with a fully fledged character. From a writer's perspective, this automatically makes for a weaker story that relies on the audience imaginatively inserting characterization and dynamics into the relationship that simply aren't in the text. I generally enjoy RPG romances, but I see them more as fanservice than quality storytelling, and developers reluctance to push the envelope with them confirms that impression for me. Obsidian have their artistic pretensions—I'm familiar with the Sawyer post you're referencing and Patrick Weekes' response to it, and that exchange strikes me as a textbook example of someone who fancies they're making "art" versus someone proud of producing pure escapism. Of course, I find it disingenuous of Sawyer and Obsidian at large to pretend they are too good for fanservice, when they're still making games where the player avatar is a badass, a leader, and a seismic force for change.

I feel like somebody high up at Obsidian had a really bad relationship or break up at some point and doesn't want anybody to experience romance lol.
I'm not surprised though, they rarely put any in the games they have done, and when they did it wasn't really anything special.

Yay for third person! The latest gameplay trailer still left me very underwhelmed. The art style still looks bland to me. A friend who played Pillars said this is just what their world looks like, very familiar to him and you either like that style or not. So I guess I don't. But maybe it will look better when playing myself. I think I'll buy it at some point just because there are not many western RPGs coming out right now. But nothing I've seen so far has caught my eye. It looks very cheap. Didn't feel like this with The Outer Worlds promotional material and that was AA as well.
Maybe it's one of those games that are a lot better than they look.

New interview with new gameplay,around 10:30 they confirms the game has playable 3rd person view now (it's not just 1st person anymore): Yaaaaaay! I love Pillars of Eternity, I'm glad I will actually be able to go back to Eora .
