Tbh, the "Eastern Game Developer" side is just the same anime face pasted 12 times. I'm all for attractive characters in games, but at least with BW we've had some different faces. You can't tell me the male options in DA were ever some same chad face, burly guy either, and I don't recall a huge backlash over those. I picked that image because the contrast was striking, but I do agree with you on the first part - the anime aesthetic has never been my thing, regardless of genders. Not quite sure what you meant in the underlined part though? If I read it correctly, you seem to say all the males in DA looked alike? I disagree. There are great differences between Duncan, Alistair and Zevran. The similarities had more to do with the limitations of the engine than a uniform look IMO. No, no, I wanted to say none of the male LIs looked like whatever the supposed ideal male is, at the moment. But they were popular with the female audience nonetheless.

Well, you should be cautious no matter what, considering what a dumpster fire Cyberpunk 2077 was at launch. CD ProjektRed has proven they are willing to lie to you in order to increase sales. If I remember correctly the publisher pushed the game out against the unified protest of the devs saying it wasn't ready. Or am I confusing it with a different game? Been a while... The lying did happen though... I don't care anymore though because they fixed the gameplay side and the story was great since day 1. And Phantom Liberty was amazing. So I'm back to worshipping them, lol. For now. Sweet Baby involvement makes me wary but I'm still super hyped right now. I MUCH prefer how Ciri looked in W3 but CGI isn't in-game so let's not all get overdramatic here. I like in-game Yen a lot better than how she looked in the trailer as well. And don't get me started on how hideous Morrigan looked in the DAI trailer. *shudders* Also nobody shit talk Aloy! As for the narrative, women have always been brutalized in the Witcher universe, much like the actual middle ages I would guess. The theme of the Witcher to me is that 90% of the people are just awful, including those sorceresses. Philippa has always hated men. Geralt finds the few decent people in that world and befriends them. So let's all hope W4 doesn't turn into men bad, all women victims and paragons of virtue. With a female protagonist nowadays there's always the danger that they'll lament hos terrible it is to be a woman in a man's world. I don't recall anybody ever having any nice words for witchers before who are all men. Their lives sure ain't fun. Plenty of men in that world have wretched lives too. In any case, that trailer overall was fire to me. 100% proper Witcher vibes. Casual superstitious evil is that world's bread and butter.

And it's done a fair bit of damage during that time, I suspect, particularly with the (slightly more recent?) rise of a dedicated subculture of Japanophiles.

This honestly reminds me of all the debates people had with Jack Thompson how violent vidya games was making society immoral. At the end of the day video games is likely a scapegoat, an easy demon to point at and potentially easy solution to what is an extremely complex culture upheaval in America. What happened with the health CEO shooting? A portion of mainstream news dug up the suspects video game history: Luigi Mangione, who was arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, once belonged to a group of Ivy League gamers who played assassins, a member of the group told NBC News.
In the game, called "Among Us," some players are secretly assigned to be killers in space who perform other tasks while trying to avoid suspicion from other players.
www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/ironic-suspect-unitedhealthcare-slaying-played-video-game-killer-rcna183550Is his habit of playing Among Us relevant? Of course not. Why even report it? Likely because it's a very easy demon to point to. The only difference is now we've progressed from "CoD and Halo" to ... Among us and sexualized Japanese games *rolls eyes*

So even if there were no Japanese video games depicting women in certain ways, everybody who wants to can easily find their way to however many gigs of free, violent porn. People realize this, right? In fact if we go to Steam we find this game pretty easily available, that's not Japanese, that you can buy on Steam. Which reportedly made 4 million dollars in sale on release store.steampowered.com/app/1034140/Subverse/I think Stellar Blade, or ... what other one is there? Whatever should be the least of your worries :S Also the idea that Steam enforces a R18+ whatever doesn't help, you can easily get that game for free if you want. EDIT: There are some very western, popular sex games you can very easily get your hands on if you want. Wiping out Asian media will do little

Unironically reinventing the Cassandra skull shape theatrics. Ah yes. Humorous. I don't get the current jaw obsession. And I think Ciri looks fine, but that's just me I guess! I could tell it was Ciri right away and said that she's gotten older. Plus, she's Emhyr's daughter - the man isn't exactly a prime spectacle of "divine beauty" himself, so she's bound to still inherit a bit of his traits as she gets older. EDIT: Meaning, I also think she looks fine!
Second, regarding the Trials of the Grasses - it's not that women were banned from doing it, it's that no School ever tried it. And while Geralt and Vessimir were curious, they weren't going to subject Ciri to it as a guinea pig just to see how she'd react to it. So, if she has undergone it (because I'm not 100% sure she did it, but...that really did look like the Cat potion, so... *shrugs*), then she found someone willing to either do it to her, or she's procured a way to do it to herself.
Third - remember folks - don't feed the trolls that wander into this thread. Thank you

The worst part about that Witcher 4 trailer is knowing CDProjekt only recently went into full production, so it's probably 3 years away

I'm a straight woman but boy Ciri is gorgeous. I wish I looked that good.
I have a friend who is also playing Veilguard and I guess was anti having her female characters have jaws to the point she brought every single slider down to 0 and now her character just looks like something is deeply wrong with their face. It is hard to find a midpoint between lantern jaw of justice and 'oh my god they lost their entire lower jaw' in Veilguard's character creator but it is possible, lol.

I accept this logical explanation, but I'm going to give this no leeway. I'm not playing a game to feel like some nobody and I still want to have a personality. It's simply bad writing. The dialogue wheel offered like six options and all of them were generic slop. For example I tried the 'empathetic' option in the opening interrogation scene. You know what Inky said in whiny voice? 'I can't believe it... all those people dead.' Like seriously? You're in the dungeon with these two intimidating people one of whom just punched you in the face. They're death door demanding your secret info why the sky is raining demons. Your answer is, 'I'm sad people die?' WTF That's not even empathy. You're just complaining about your own sad feels. Heck, you're not even addressing asked question. Even Joe shmoe average wouldn't say that unless that punch landed TOO hard. There is zero imagination or impact in that about nothing line. I'd rather have 3 options than 6, but they need to be better thought out. Cullen while choking Inky: WHY IS THE SKY RAINING DEMONS??? Inky: I so sad people die. Spiders ate your brain in that green murky void. Dunno being in a dungeon with Leliana and Cassandra sounds like a dream come true. Punch me some more "My safe word is 'ouch'"

The worst part about that Witcher 4 trailer is knowing CDProjekt only recently went into full production, so it's probably 3 years away It took them 10 years to get Cyberpunk in shape after the first trailer that was not very cinematic but still brilliant and atmospheric. However, the first cinematic trailer for Witcher 3 was only about a year and a half from official release. It seems, Witcher 4 should be somewhere in between these two. I would bet for less than 2 years but more than a year if I had some money to spare.

Just a few months ago this forum was complaining that modern surgery had no place in this medieval setting. But it's appropriate for Ciri to be looking like a supermodel in professionally done makup and plastic surgery? The goalposts.

Hell, I can't claim to have watched a whole lot of anime, but from what little I've seen, the villains tend to be depraved would-be rapists while male and female heroes tend to fight side-by side on generally equal footing.

Among us and sexualized Japanese games *rolls eyes* It's a bit different, as I'm not proposing that Japanese video games are driving anyone to commit crimes - but anime in general has worrying portrayals of women, underage girls, and sexual ethics. A certain subset of the population will find their views informed by the media they consume. Lol.

Well, you should be cautious no matter what, considering what a dumpster fire Cyberpunk 2077 was at launch. CD ProjektRed has proven they are willing to lie to you in order to increase sales. At this point I assume any AAA game is going to suck until I hear otherwise from reviews I truest. Don't even need reviews. If people are on the fence, there's a bunch of streamers that play the game on launch. I use them to check out whether the game looks technically decent and not too buggy and whether the game itself looks interesting

A certain subset of the population will find their views informed by the media they consume. Umm, I've been playing Persona 5 and watching My Hero Academia lately, and have seen NONE of that! Hell, I can't claim to have watched a whole lot of anime, but from what little I've seen, the villains tend to be depraved would-be rapists while male and female heroes tend to fight side-by side on generally equal footing. Having enjoyed P5R so often, I could make a case for the "sexual ethics" part, particularly in regards to one confidant, but...it'd be a flimsy case at best.
Friendly reminder again - please do not feed trolls that decide to wander into this thread, looking to cause problems. We don't need this thread getting locked again please. Thank you.
