I'm still wondering if it's directly confirmed anywhere that Shepard even ended up landing on Alchera, rather than just being caught in orbit. I'll take statements from comics, books, or something in-game.
The closest justifications I've seen are the fact that Shep's helmet is on the planet surface and the fact that there is atmospheric 'flare' around Shep's body as the ME2 opening cutscene ends, suggesting re-entry. The flare in particular makes no sense, since the cutscene also shows Shepard far too far away from the planet to be in-atmosphere. The helmet on the planet makes more sense to me if it's just a spare.
And now you've got me curious how a discussion of the Andromeda Initiative leaving date got onto the topic of Shepard and Alchera. *Skims the previous few thread pages*

Miranda's Lazarus Project logs at the start of ME2 cite difficulties in the project due to "long-term vacuum exposure" as well as being subjected to subzero temperatures. I've been googling but I can see nothing about that? At the start of ME2 I could see Miranda's predecessor complaining about difficulties in reviving Shepard due to trauma and a long period without oxygen. Nothing about vacuum or subzero temperatures, though. I think it's the one you find after meeting Jacob: "Test subject has been recovered, but the damage is far worse than we initially feared. In addition to the expected burns and internal injuries from the explosion, subject has suffered significant cellular breakdown due to long-term exposure to vacuum and sub-zero temperatures. Despite the extent of the physical trauma, Wilson assures me subject is salvageable. The Lazarus Project will proceed as planned."

I said this sudden revelation of intergalactic tech is as stupid as the Lazarus project.

Some general thoughts on the AI: For me the biggest question is not the "how do we get to Andromeda" - though I understand how people are curious about this - but the "why are we going to Andromeda". They want to recruit us, so they better come up with a good in game/story reason. Just out of curiosity, I don't think you launch ARKS to go to a different galaxy. To flee the Reaper invasion? Sure, I'm on board. To find an out in case dark energy kills the milky way? OK, maybe. But 600 years of cryo sleep to find a new homeworld without the actual homeworlds being in danger in the new game sounds really strange. Are we cultists?

Not that they'd want us , but the point is you don't have to be in a cult to be excited about going somewhere new.

Makes sense being when Shepard died and was magically brought back to life... ...everything that followed was a nonsensical dream anyway. What are you talking about? the Lazarus project explain this. Not only that there were clones to harvest organs from, which Citadel DLC undoubtedly explains. If we had the tech they have in ME I'd say we could actually bring someone back to life. Why is that such an unbelievable concept? Head implant surgery is something that is being looked into today; you know where they remove someones head and graph it onto another body. Science is an extraordinary thing, I wouldn't be surprised if we learn how to bring someone back to life. It's a loose explanation that is plucked out to support the contrived "rebooting" Shepard in ME2 in order fpr it to be a starting point into the franchise. Regarding possibilities - I am not a biologist/doctor, but I am a physics teacher and do have an open mind for future technology, metaphysics and general possibilities as our knowledge develops. That doesn't change my opinion on the Lazarus project being nonsense given Shepard's body should have never survived re-entry.

Oh, I am excited to go somewhere new as a player in ME Andromeda, but giving me a meaningful reason why we should or have to travel to a different galaxy is still atop of my questions list.

Sure, but if NASA said they were going to launch a 100 year journey to colonise HD 131399Ab would you sign up? You would probably say 'What about Mars?' The point is there are plenty of new places to go that are much less risky, much cheaper, and will allow you to be resupplied and back out.

The question I was answering was why would the colonists sign up, ie 'was it a cult'. Not a question of why a government/corp would pick that planet/system, but why the individual colonists would join the project. The point I was making is that you don't have to be some weirdo cult, escaping a dying planet etc for individuals to sign up for something like this. The reasons can vary from 'wow Andro ...awesome' to some 'deep mystery in your past' tm , the game will no doubt touch on a few of these at some point.

OK I suspect that is more that you just love the idea of space exploration. I'll try again. If you had a choice of setting up a colony with a two week trip to Mars or a 100 year trip to HD 131399Ab, which would you choose? Colonists in the Mass Effect world have many better options in this regard. Of course, you don't just need colonists to sign up. You also need the massive expenditure from the corporation or government to get this thing started. I don't see any good reason so far why travelling to Andromeda is a sensible. Escape the Reapers would be an answer but the time suggests this probably isn't the case.

Eh, there's always any number of fools willing to do something stupidly dangerous just because they can. I mean, look at Cerberus' numbers. Still doesn't answer how they are able to do it in the first place. And why isn't there a massive colonial migration permeating the Milky Way (by less foolish adventurers) as a result?

Why would colonists sign up for whatever planet/system the corp/council picked in 1. What I am saying is that if NASA tomorrow announced for whatever reason (that would be question 1) that they were going to HD 131399Ab then yes you would still get a boat load of people signing up for whatever reasons (question 2). The original post I answered was all about the question 2. Yes you will get some people who would ask 'why not mars', but you would get enough to fill a ship who would say 'hell yeah HD 131399Ab here I come'

There's also the logical follow-up issue. Let's say the arks get to Andromeda and everything is hunky dory. Then what? Do we phone home to the MW and tell everyone else to come too? Why? Do we start shipping resources back to the MW? Again, why?

Exactly. Then nothing. You aren't going to go there in order to send back raw materials, or invite more friends over. The main problem is there really isn't a logical reason to go there besides "because it's there."

Pretty sure Reaper threat is "secret" reason for AI, I just find it amusing how nobody in ME world bats an eye on "official" reason. - Did you hear about that AI thing? They invented intergalactic FTL or something, and plan a 600 years long trip to get some palladium. - Yeah, cool stuff, we sure could use some palladium in 1200 years.
